Movie News: John C. Reilly confirmed for Guardians of the Galaxy

The Wrap has reported that John C. Reilly has confirmed that he has signed on to play Rhomann Dey in Guardians of the Galaxy. We figured that’s the role Reilly would play, but what we don’t know is what kind of role it will be.

In the comics, Dey is the leader of the Nova Corps and eventually becomes Nova Prime. He then transferred his powers to a human, Richard Rider. The reports now are saying that this role will be nothing like that and essentially he’ll be more like Agent Coulson to be a liaison for the Guardians.

That being said, I don’t think Marvel would cast Reilly to play a role where he’s just going to be a liaison to the Guardians. I’m sure his role will be much bigger than that. I don’t know enough about the comics or the character to know if he’ll end up becoming Nova Prime but you can bet his role will have some sort of importance. To further that point, when we first posted about this, the role was described as “a big commitment,” meaning that not only will it be a big role, but more than likely multiple films as well. Either way, if you know anything about this project and the aesthetic that it will bring, Reilly will definitely fit in.

Guardians of the Galaxy will be released August 1, 2014.

Movie Review: Man of Steel is super

Director: Zack Snyder
Writers: David Goyer (screenplay/story), Christopher Nolan (story)
Stars: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner

Synopsis: A young itinerant worker is forced to confront his secret extraterrestrial heritage when Earth is invaded by members of his race.

DIRECTION
With all the trailers and TV spots that were released, anticipation levels for Man of Steel kept getting higher and higher? So does it disappoint? Nope, not at all. Director Zack Snyder (with the help of producer Christopher Nolan) crafts the best superhero/comic-book film ever made. After the underwhelming Superman Returns in 2006, Snyder and Co. made a Superman film for the ages. The epic nature and scope of the film is unlike anything you’ve seen before in a superhero/comic-book film. Whether it’s the origin story – which could not have been told any better and is only aided by solid performances all-around – to the visuals and the action, Man of Steel is a must-see. Snyder, who directed 300 and Watchmen, has always been known for his amazing visual eye and that’s no different here – either in some very Terrence Malick-type shots or in the many, many action sequences that put anything seen in The Avengers to shame. The only downside to some of these sequences is Snyder’s use of a handheld camera, which provides for a very shaky (literally) experience. Wide shots of all the action sequences and destruction and less editing would have been preferred but do not take away from the overall experience. Overall, the way all of the different elements come together makes this easily Snyder’s best film of his career so far. And now, the anticipation for the sequel starts.

SCRIPT
The structure of David Goyer’s Man of Steel script is perfect, providing a different approach to telling an origin story – something future superhero reboots should follow – and focusing on themes of redemption, love, hope, destiny and greatness. Instead of opening chronologically, the film opens with the birth of Kal-El and the destruction of Krypton before shifting to a drifting, adult Clark Kent. And as he continues his journey to find out who he is and where he is from, we get flashbacks to certain moments in his life that have defined him (discovering his powers and using them for the first time to first finding out he is not from this planet and so forth) – which, despite some very clunky dialogue, provide the most heartfelt and best moments of the film. Then about halfway through, after General Zod comes and Clark Kent dons the cape, the film transitions into an all-out action mayhem spectacle. Man of Steel is nearly 2 1/2 hours but moves at an extremely brisk pace, beginning with a 20-30 minute, awe-inspiring sequence and ending with one of the best dialogue exchanges of the entire film.

PERFORMANCES
The performances in Man of Steel are solid all-around. Henry Cavill brings a different take to Clark Kent/Superman than Christopher Reeves and Brandon Routh before him. He is more brooding, more vulnerable and displays more physicality. Amy Adams is also not your typical Lois Lane; the intrepid reporter or damsel in distress are gone and instead we get a woman who is more involved and kind of in-your-face. The chemistry between Cavill and Adams is pretty good in the film and it will be interesting to see where it goes in the sequel and beyond. Michael Shannon was the perfect choice to play General Zod; he’s insane and menacing while also being frustrated and desperate as he tries to accomplish his goals. Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner are terrific and are really the backbones of the film, playing Jor-El and Jonathan Kent, respectively. They are Kal-El/Clark Kent’s fathers and do a great job in their scenes where they basically teach their son how to be the man he is meant to be. The reason these touching moments are the best is because of Crowe and Costner’s performances.

SCORE
Hans Zimmer is one of the best composers of all-time. And while Man of Steel‘s score isn’t one of his best, it’s still pretty darn good. With a very dark, very reminiscent feel of what he did on The Dark Knight trilogy, Zimmer crafts a score that fits this incarnation of Superman perfectly. It doesn’t feature anything quite as iconic at John Williams’ Superman theme, but the very piano-driven piece that plays during some of the more heartfelt moments is something that won’t soon be forgotten.

Movie News: Man of Steel writer David Goyer discusses MOS/DC future

With Man of Steel coming out this weekend, lots of people are wondering what the possibilities will be going forward with Superman and his possible friends. Well in an interview with HeyUGuys, Man of Steel writer, David Goyer, offered some insight into Batman in this new universe.

“Zack [Snyder] has said that Bruce Wayne exists in this universe. It would be a different Bruce Wayne from Chris’ [Nolan] Dark Knight trilogy, and it would be disingenuous to say that Zack and I haven’t had various conversations on set, around ‘what if’ and ‘moving forward’”.

With Warner Bros. already working on a sequel to Man of Steel, it’s not far fetched to think we may see Batman or some other DC hero join in on the fun.

In another interview with DenOfGeek, Goyer discussed what Lex Luther’s involvement’s would be in a MOS sequel.

“Previous depictions of Lex Luthor on film depict him as a bit bumbling. Even though Gene Hackman’s depiction was fun, we’ve indicated with Lexcorps that you can infer that Lex in this world is more a Bill Gates or Rupert Murdoch like character. He’s probably a multi, multi billionaire. He’s not a crook.”

Let’s be realistic here, Man of Steel is going to get a sequel. Regardless of the mixed reviews, the marketing did a superb job and it will get people into the theaters. This movie will make a lot of money and as we’ve mentioned, Warner Bros. is already working on it. To them, they are most likely looking at this as the start of their big DC project which could lead to Justice League, if done right.

Look for Nate’s full review of Man of Steel which will be coming shortly. In the meantime, if you’ve seen the film, let us know your thoughts on Man of Steel in the comments below.

Movie Trailer: New look at Elysium shows Matt Damon in action

0

While it’s not a ton different from the first trailer, the new trailer for Elysium looks great and we see more Matt Damon in action looking to kick some butt. The fight scenes look really great and I love the visuals that Neill Blomkamp is bringing here to this film. I get the feeling that there is a lot more to this story that they are not showing, and if I’m right, it could be a really great film. Anyway, check out the new trailer and let us know what you think in the comment section below!

Elysium hits theaters on August 9th.

Movie News: Arnold Schwarzenegger back in Terminator 5

Arnold Schwarzenegger himself announced that he will be back in Terminator 5 and to star as the Terminator once again. Schwarzenegger also went on to say that shooting for the film will begin next January.

Some rumored that he would be playing the human soldier that ended up being the design inspiration for the original T-800 but this confirms that he will in fact, be the Terminator. This is interesting given the fact that he was in office when the last film came out and that he’s in the mid 60’s in age. While The Last Stand was an okay movie, an old Schwarzenegger beating up on younger foes isn’t very believable to me. That being said, as the Terminator it could be very different given the nature of the role.

Currently, T5 has no director and the movie itself isn’t even greenlighted yet so technically this is just all theory. So it’ll be fun to see how it plays out and if a 66-year-old Schwarzenegger will work as the Terminator again. Consider me on board though.

Movie Review: This is the End offends but is hysterical

Director: Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen
Writers:  Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen
Stars: James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson

Synopsis: While attending a party at James Franco’s house, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel and many other celebrities are faced with the apocalypse.

[/info]

DIRECTION
Rogen and Goldberg created one heck of a comedy with some of the most interesting and hilarious moments I’ve seen in recent comedies. The aesthetic they created at the beginning is really unique and a lot of fun. You see the characters as themselves, and while we don’t know if that’s really how they are in real life, you get the sense that you’re seeing them in the real world and it’s believable (for the most part). As the story unfolds, Rogen and Goldberg’s camera work isn’t very original but it’s used in such a way that brings a laugh in itself. Their music choices are used the same way which is one of the better parts of the whole movie. The songs they chose and the timing to use them was perfect and hysterical. The performances are exactly what you’d want in a film like this, especially given the chemistry these guys have. The visuals aren’t the greatest at times but it’s intentional and meant to make you laugh. That being said, there is actually some really good CGI used in this film which you don’t get in many comedies. Last year’s, Ted, is the only other exception to this which used it’s main character as a CGI character. Perhaps my favorite part is the use of the main characters movies they’ve been in before and how they use them to make fun of each other. The decision to spotlight them and utilize it to make fun of themselves is amazing and fun to see. Overall, the laughs are often and the drama is felt which puts this comedy up at the top of the list for this year and will make it very difficult to beat.

SCRIPT
The script to this film is pretty incredible. I’m guessing a descent chunk of this was ad libbed which may take away from the grade but not knowing which parts were made up and which parts were scripted means that I grade it on that assumption. The dialogue here is incredibly offensive at times but very funny all the way throughout. As I mentioned, the characters don’t take themselves serious at all and they make fun of each other and themselves all the way throughout. What surprised me though is that the story itself, does take itself serious with some pretty awesome (and did I say surprising) themes. The story comes down to friendship and relationships and how to deal with conflict when tension arrives. It also deals with being a good person and the possible consequences of thinking only about yourself. Those themes are sometimes dramatic, while still being funny, but definitely on the surface and ultimately become the movie’s conclusion. The environment in which that theme takes place though can be very offensive depending on your beliefs which does bring it down a little bit for me. However if you can get past that aesthetic, the friendship and human spirit themes are good and you don’t want to miss those because of any offensive material. The story is well written, thrilling for a good part of the film and of course, extremely funny. Easily the best comedy of the year so far.

PERFORMANCES
The performances are interesting to me in this film. You have actors playing themselves in a movie that has some pretty crazy circumstances. Does the way they act in the film as themselves portray how they are in real life? Most likely not given the nature of where the film goes, but it’s still an interesting question. Everyone does an amazing job and deliver the lines perfectly which creates a very fun environment, even as the world around them goes to hell (literally). There is one scene particularly between James Franco and Danny McBride that is going to be offensive to some but because of the delivery and how well written it is, make it perhaps the funniest scene in the film. And you get things like that throughout the movie that easily puts this to the top. There are a ton of cameos in this film as well which makes the film even more believable (at least at the beginning) that also adds a ton to the movie’s first 20 minutes. The hyperbole in both the script and the performances are exactly what you need here.

SCORE
Henry Jackman anyone? Man, is this guy on fire right now and he does it again. I’ve been on the Jackman bandwagon for quite a while now and for a comedy film, you don’t expect a big score. That being said, this isn’t just a comedy. There’s lots of action and thriller-like moments that demands a good score which Jackman brings. His score adds the “scary” moments you need while bringing the right comedic and light tones you also need to make it fun. His score, along with the amazing soundtrack included with this movie, makes this soundtrack one of my favorite’s for the whole year so far.

Movie News: Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer to tackle next Tomb Raider film

The next Tomb Raider film has found its writer.

According to Variety, MGM has penned Marti Noxon to script the most recent adaptation of the video game franchise. Noxon is best known for working on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where she wrote 23 episodes for the TV series.

This seems to be a very good move on paper, as Noxon does pretty good work, having also scripted the Fright Night remake and I Am Number Four, two films I enjoyed way more than I should’ve. And she also wrote on Buffy, which is considered one of the greatest TV series of all-time and featured an ass-kicking female just like Lara Croft in Tomb Raider.

While the first two Tomb Raider films – featuring Angelina Jolie in the Lara Croft role – didn’t exactly blow away the box office, they were fun and there’s still lots of interest there. There just was a new, critically-acclaimed video game released dealing with her origin, so now’s the perfect time to get her back on the big screen.

Movie News – Insidious: Chapter 2 poster features creepy baby walker

Insidious: Chapter 2 is shaping up to be one creepy sequel.

Last week we got the first trailer. Today we got this poster. It’s safe to say that Insidious: Chapter 2 has raised the creepiness factor of 2011’s Insidious.

Insidious: Chapter 2 opens on September 13.

Movie News: Lakers center Dwight Howard cast in animated film Free Birds

So I guess since basketball isn’t working out very well right now, Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard has decided to check out acting as a career, well voice acting anyway.

The NBA star has signed on for a voice role in Free Birds which an animated film co-starring Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Amy Poehler, Dan Fogler, and many other. The movie will be directed by Jimmy Hayward. The story follows a pair of turkeys who travel back in time in an attempt to remove their species from the Thanksgiving menu. So where does Howard fit in? Well Howard will voice the role of Cold Turkey, a wild turkey the duo meet in the middle of their adventure.

This will not be Howard’s first appearance on screen as he appeared as himself in Just Wright back in 2010 and in “comedy” The Three Stooges.

Look for Free Birds in theaters on November 1.

Movie Trailer: First look at 300: Rise of an Empire surprisingly not that bad

0

Zack Snyder seems to be a hot commodity right now with Man of Steel coming out and his sequel to that getting of the ground already as well. While Snyder didn’t direct 300: Rise of an Empire, he does have a writing credit meaning he did have a hand on the script here and it may be better than originally thought. I loved Snyder’s 300, but it is a great stand alone movie so I didn’t really care much for this project. That being said, this trailer has interested me a little bit and is better than I would have thought. I’m still a bit skeptical but it may be better than we all originally thought. Anyway, check it out and let us know what you think!

Movie Trailer: Naomi Watts shines as Diana

0

I can imagine that playing Princess Diana is a challenging and stressful role given her popularity and how adored she was. Naomi Watts has the look to pull it off and is an actress that can be convincing. The trailer for Diana is pretty intentional about not showing her face for the first little bit to give you a sense of realizing who you’re watching. The latter half of the trailer I’m sure will be a little gut wrenching to her die hard fans. It doesn’t give anything away but you get a good sense of where it’s going. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Movie News: Michael Bay reveals another Transformers 4 photo

Michael Bay has been busy over the last few weeks filming Transformers 4 and revealed to us what his latest Autobots will look like. Well today he’s given us another beauty (sort of) to look at. Check out the Sonic RS Rally Car that apparently is walking on two wheels.

Transformers 4 Sonic RS Rally

Transformers 4 comes out next June.

Movie News: Michael Bay looks to do Clancy’s Ghost Recon

It’s been reported that Ubisoft has recruited Michael Bay to develop the long lasting video game franchise, Ghost Recon, into a feature film for Warner Bros. The first Ghost Recon game was released in 2001, which was awesome, and it’s most recent entry, Future Soldier, was released last year. If you’re not familiar with Ghost Recon, it revolves around a top-secret group that is rarely dispatched but when they do, they wreak havoc and leave without a trace.

Ubisoft has been very meticulous in handling their video games going to the big screen. Before releasing any properties to film studios they landed Michael Fassbender in Assassin’s Creed and Tom Hardy for Splinter Cell making sure that they don’t fall victim to what is now stereotype to say “video game movies are bad.” Personally, I love the idea that they are taking this very serious and getting the right people on board.

Right now, Bay is on only as a producer but he may be open to direct after Transformers 4 is finished. Bay is a great action film director and this series is more about tactics and stealth which could be a struggle given the fact he is great at blowing things up. That being said, he has shot great scenes involving firefights with intense drama and action. If he’s able to mix those very well, we could get a great Ghost Recon film.

What do you guys think?

In case you didn’t know, Ubisoft has already made a Ghost Recon short film called Ghost Recon Alpha that was produced by Ridley Scott.

Movie Trailer: Paranoia has great cast and looks like fun

0

Paranoia has a great cast that includes Liam Hemsworth, Gary Oldman, Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfuss, Amber Heard, and Josh Holloway. The film centers around Hemsworth’s character who is from Brooklyn climbing the corporate ladder and is hired by Oldman’s character to spy for him which leads to all kinds of drama. Oldman’s rival, played for Ford is the one being spied on and when things get messy, these two guys look to have some great screen time. The film is directed by Robert Luketic, who directed 21 and Legally Blonde.

Paranoia comes to theaters August 16.

Movie Trailer: Bad people doing bad things in Runner, Runner

0

Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake, Anthony Mackie and Gemma Arterton star in this film where offshore online gambling is apparently the thing to do. Brad Furman, who directed Lincoln Lawyer, is at the helm here. The film looks to have some serious drama to it and I’m not sure how I feel about Affleck being a bad guy. Take a look for yourself.

Runner, Runner comes to theaters September 27.

Movie Trailer: Hit-or-miss CGI and cheesiness return in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Oh, Peter Jackson. You made one of the best trilogies of all-time with The Lord of the Rings – and then you made The Hobbit.

And today we got the first trailer for the sequel to that stinkfest, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and it doesn’t look much better. The hit-or-miss CGI and cheesiness of the first film all seem to be making a reappearance.

But one piece of good news: Legolas is in this and you get a glimpse of Smaug the dragon (voiced by one of the best actors working in Benedict Cumberbatch).

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens on December 13.

Movie News: A Sequel to The Purge is Happening

For whatever reason, The Purge is getting a sequel.

Actually, there is a reason a follow-up is happening: The Purge opened this weekend at the top spot of the box office with $34 million – over 10 times as much as the film’s budget.

So The Purge 2: Purge Harder (just kidding!) is happening, as Universal and producer Jason Blum are going to work.

We thought the Ethan Hawke-starring film was better than expected but missed out on a lot of opportunities exploring the idea of The Purge itself. I think this is something that could be addressed in a sequel as it’s an event that is very sprawling with many different elements and characters that could be visited and different routes that could be taken.

Featured: Three Reasons Why Man of Steel Won’t Disappoint

0

Man of Steel comes out this Thursday and the marketing for this film has been some of the best I’ve ever seen. The trailers haven’t revealed a ton plot wise but has shown that there will be lots of epic action. However, 2013 didn’t have the greatest of starts and we’ve been let down by some major films this year we thought were going to be big hits. Iron Man 3 and Pain & Gain were two films I was really looking forward to that didn’t live up to what I was hoping for by any means. Other sci-fi films such as Oblivion and After Earth also were let downs, although I did enjoy Oblivion for the most part. That being said, here are three reasons why Man of Steel will live up to the expectations and will most likely be the best action/sci-fi movie of the year.

1) A Coming of Age

This Superman film is going to be unlike any we’ve ever seen before which will rejuvenate this franchise while creating news fans in the process. This will be a story of Superman back on his home planet, what happens to him and his people and how he ends up on earth. We’re going to learn a lot more about where he comes and how that impacts who he is. His real father, played by Russell Crowe, looks to have a big impact on him and who he is to become. That being said, I haven’t seen it yet but I based off all the marketing we’ve seen that’s the sense I get. And who doesn’t love that? This will not just be all action folks, but we are more than likely to get a really great story. Speaking of that…

2) Christopher Nolan

Nolan produced this film and I tend to trust anything he puts his hands too. And Warner Bros. apparently does too as they gave up a lot to be a part of his new film, Interstellar. That beings said, whatever part Nolan played on this film is important and I’m sure was heavy in guiding Zack Snyder to create a wonderful story. I’ve never seen any film that Nolan had a hand in and left thinking, “That was terrible”. Warner Bros. has already moved on to making the sequel too, which is just another indicator that this film turned out great. I understand that Snyder directed this and it will be his shoulders on which this rises or falls, but Nolan as a producer doesn’t hurt you at all. I trust both of them.

1) Incredible Themes

Based off the marketing and from the few reviews I’ve read, the main reason I’m excited for this is the incredible themes this movie will have. This will be a story of hope, learning your place in a strange world and who you are supposed to be. It’ll be masked in action sequences and super hero stuff (which will be a lot of fun!) but don’t miss the underlying themes here. At some point in all of our lives, we have to learn and figure out who we are and what we want to do in this world. Perhaps someday you’ll get to be Superman and get to save the world. Either way, hope is just around the corner and I suspect that’s something you’ll be able to get out of this movie. It’s a fun metaphor that I’m looking forward to seeing.

Movie News: Check Out This First Look At Need for Speed!

Dreamworks and Electronic Arts have given us our very first look at the upcoming video game adaptation, Need for Speed. This is a behind the scenes look at some of the awesome cars they are racing with as well as some cars flipping through the air. And I’ll admit, while video game adaptations don’t usually do well, this has potential. We also get some quick cuts of stars Aaron Paul and Dominic Cooper which looks pretty cool as well.

We’ll still have to wait and see what the final product will be like given the fact it could be a tough sell. However, it’s being directed by Scott Waugh whose first feature was last year’s Act of Valor, which had some amazing action sequences. Waugh will have some better talented actors here so I have some hopes for it. Either way, check out this awesome behind-the-scenes look at Need for Speed.
