Poll: What is your favorite Marvel film NOT in the MCU?
As we lead up to Fox’s new Fantastic Four film coming out this weekend, we wanted to look at other Marvel films that aren’t in the MCU. While some have not been very good, there are some that stand out as really great films. Last year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past comes to mind as well as Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2, which I’d argue is one of the best superhero films we’ve seen yet.

Featured: Paper Towns Surprises
I am a firm believer that people come into your life for a reason and whether it’s a lesson, blessing or a damn headache. Quentin ( Nat Wolff) is a safeguarded High School senior who always does things by the book. Quentin plans to attend Duke with hopes of becoming a doctor. Quentin has lived next store to Margo Roth Spiegelman (Cara Delevingne) since he was 9. The first time he laid eyes on her; she became his shining light on a darkened day, too bad she never knew it.
Quentin’s century was made one night when Margo recruits him to help her play mischievous pranks on the friends who betrayed her. Margo introduces Quentin to several things that day, but the most important is Paper Towns. Margo vanishes over the next few days, and Quentin enlists the help of his friends Ben (Austin Abrams) and Radar (Justice Smith) to help him piece the together the clues Margo left him.
Paper Towns is based on the novel by John Green ( The Fault in our Stars), not as emotionally invested as his former film but this is still an excellent film. Paper Towns delivers a heartfelt story about love and friendship, backed by excellent performances by Wolff and Delevinge.
Paper Towns is a movie you have to be in the mood for, just as you would need to be in the mood to eat a whole bucket of Ice Cream by yourself watching Downtown Abbey. Paper Towns is a slow-moving film that’s filled with heavy dialogue, but screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber tell the story in a way that relates to us in some way or another.
As good as this film is there are several huge problems with it, and it all has to do with the high-schoolers having free rein to do whatever the hell they want. Margo can just disappear like a welfare check, The kids can just leave school and travel by themselves over 1,200 miles away in the middle of the night. I know Florida has the weirdest things happen, so in the scope of the film this makes sense.
Paper Towns is on my Top 10 list of best films of 2015 so far, and if you are a fan of The Fault in Our Stars you will love this one Paper Towns has terrific young leads.

For our poll this week, as we lead up to Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation this weekend, we are talking about Tom Cruise. There are a lot of options to choose from, certainly, but we focused on the films where he is unquestionably the lead star and of course some of his best work as well.

Featured: James Shaw on Southpaw
In Hollywood, there seems to be an obsession with boxing where two competitors usually face-off in a battle that’s bigger than the sport. The problem with all this films is that the plot is pretty much the same. Southpaw is the latest film that puts Jake Gyllenhaal in the squared circle. Southpaw has all the same boxing clichés that you would expect: the fall, the comeback, the climactic fight. The main draw for this film to me was Gyllenhaal and Rachel McAdams. Jake Gyllenhaal has owned every role he has done as of late, especially in NightCrawler. McAdams to me can do no wrong.
Billy Hope (Gyllenhaal) who after winning the World Light Heavyweight Championship gets advised by his wife Maureen ( McAdams) that it’s time to hang it up. Hope is challenged by an upcoming boxer named Miguel “Magic” Escobar but he refuses as he wants to respect his wife’s wishes. Tragedy leaves everything taken from Hope, and he will need to raise again to reclaim his family and his status.
This film is maybe six boxing films too late to be a top 10 film because it’s very predictable and puts the focus in the wrong places. One place they could have put more focus on was the relationship between Hope and his daughter Leila (Oona Laurence). The moments with them were easily the best moments of the film and showed Hope as a man first and not a fighter.
Director Antonie Fuqua (The Equalizer) along with cinematographer Mauro Fiore (The Equalizer) again do a fantastic job of making the film’s four fights thrilling and entertaining. The opening bout starts off like an HBO-style fight where we rarely get an up close view of the fighters. The last fight, however, we get an intimate viewing of Gyllenhaal’s mean mug, and I love it.
The thing that saves this film is Gyllenhaal’s performance. Gyllenhaal’s eccentric presence, awareness, and self-indulging behavior dance circles around Kurt Sutter script. McAdams, I love you girl, but that accent needs to go like away like bad breath.
Southpaw is a recommended if you like boxing films or if you are a fan of Gyllenhaal’s work.
