Movie Review: Pacific Rim brings the awesome

Director: Guillermo del Toro
Writers:  Travis Beacham (screenplay), Guillermo del Toro
Stars: Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman

Synopsis: As a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse.

DIRECTION
Pacific Rim is easily one of Guillermo del Toro’s best work and he brings to life an environment that is just incredible. The aesthetic is dropped on your lap in the first moments as the film opens with a montage of how the Kaiju (Japanese word for monsters) came to Earth and started to wreak havoc. The montage also went on to explain how the Jaeger (German word for hunter) program came to be so they could fight the Kaiju and save Earth. While the pacing was a little quick in the beginning, you get enough of a sense to know and believe in the world we’ve been introduced to and you get all of the information you need to understand what’s going on. And then it’s on. The fight scenes are incredible and breath-taking with amazing and gorgeous visuals that bring this world to life and it’s so much fun. The detail of the Jaegers and the Kaiju are incredible and so realistic, making it some of the best CGI out there. Simply, it’s bad-ass. While all the main battles take place at night, the night lights del Toro uses and the intentional neon lights used in the design of the creatures, make it very easy to follow along with what’s going on. However there’s more story here than you’d think in a movie like this; I mean c’mon, it’s del Toro we’re talking about. The drifting elements that combine the two Jaeger pilots create an amazing relationship dynamic that makes this movie standout. The two pilots have to become one to fight better and defeat the enemy and that concept is amazing. The exploration of it, while broad, was done really well and is a huge aspect to why this film is amazing. Del Toro’s musical choices is also incredible and I ‘ll get to that in a bit. Outside of the incredible visuals, del Toro is amazing with his camera work as usual. He places his camera in specific places to capture not only the fights, but the aesthetic of the cities we’re thrown into as well as the conversations we’re exposed to. If you walk out of this world and you don’t have fun, you may want to check your pulse.

SCRIPT
The story here is pretty good and original which makes this film unique and a lot of fun. However, Pacific Rim will struggle to find a big audience because of it though. The Kaiju have found a portal to the human world deep in the pacific and have started war to ravage and destroy the human race. To counter that, the countries of the world drop politics and come together to start the Jaeger program to save the planet, which is an interesting concept. We’re thrown into the Jaeger pretty quickly after we meet Charlie Hunnam’s character and his brother, who are Jaeger pilots and two of the world’s best. Without giving away spoilers, Hunnam is faced with some emotional baggage that he deals with throughout the movie and who could blame the guy? After awhile the Kaiju have evolved and start winning the war, which means the Jaeger program may be shut down. Other program attempts fail and it’s the Jaegers who have to come to the rescue. Charlie Day’s character, who is a Kaiju science expert, finds some information that helps the Jaeger program executives come up with a plan that is thought out well. Within all of that, we are exposed to some pretty interesting relationships, some explored and some not, and some come full circle in unexpected places. They bring emotion, for the most part, and Idris Elba character’s speech at the end of the film is moving and executed perfectly. While some of it may be cheesy, it’s expected for a film like this and the story comes together well given the fact we know what’s going to happen and how it will play out.

PERFORMANCES
The performances may be the weakest link of the whole movie but it doesn’t distract you from the main elements of the film. Charlie Hunnam won’t win any Oscars for his performance here but he’s believable enough that you care about him when he’s in the Jaeger, which is what matters. Hunnam doesn’t quite have the emotional bandwidth which is the main criticm of the movie as the lead character. You lose out an important element because while it’s written well, he doesn’t quite pull it out, but again, you get enough to not lose yourself with what he’s doing. His chemistry with Rinko Kikuchi however is a mixed bag which may take away from the film a little bit though. As his Jaeger partner, Kikuchi does a great job with her role as a fighter and someone who can “drift” with Hunnam’s character. The “romantic” relationship they have is not explored well and should of been left out. Charlie Day and Ron Perlman bring some great comic relief to the movie and while it’s all cheesed out, it adds some fun humor and is what’s needed in a film like this. The star, however, is Idris Elba. Man, is he an amazing actor and he brings it here as Stacker Pentecost. He’s the general for the Jaeger program and he’s a complete bad-ass. Every time he’s on screen, he elevates the movie and even the actors around him. The supporting cast such as Clifton Collins Jr. is pretty good, especially the relationship between Robert Kazinsky and Max Martini characters. I can’t even go into it without welling up a little bit, honestly.

SCORE
Holy Kaiju is Ramin Djawadi’s score amazing. His score is basically a rock band with a violin or two and it’s awesome. You hear lots of electric guitars and drums and it’s anything but traditional. It’s perfectly fitting to the aesthetic we’re thrown into and the main theme is a lot of fun. You hear the main theme several times throughout the film but it’s never overwhelming. It does have some orchestral elements and it’s blended in perfectly with the rock music to make for a very fun listen to in and out of the movie.

Movie Trailer: How to Train Your Dragon 2 teaser is amazing

0

The new teaser for How to Train Your Dragon 2 was released yesterday and it is pretty awesome. I think it’s what teaser trailer need to look like and tease the movie, which this one does well. The first one was awesome so I’m definitely looking forward to this one.

Look for this trailer to be in theaters when Turbo is released.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 will come to theaters next June.

Movie Trailer: Tom Hanks is Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks

Have you ever wondered how the film Mary Poppins came to be? You will now.

Today we got the trailer for Saving Mr. Banks, a film about Walt Disney trying to make a film on Mary Poppins. Tom Hanks stars as Disney and Emma Thompson stars as P.L. Travers, who authored the world’s best nanny novel. The trailer has a nice look to and the performances look pretty good, but not sure if this is really a story that needs to be told.

Saving Mr. Banks is directed by John Lee Hancock, best known for 2009’s The Blind Side, and also stars Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzman and Bradley Whitmore.

Saving Mr. Banks floats into theaters on December 20.

Movie Trailer: Out of the Furnace looks incredible

Not even going to waste any time: Out of the Furnace looks incredible.

Today, we got the new trailer for Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper’s newest film, a dark thriller starring Christian Bale and Casey Affleck as two brothers who get themselves involved in a little bit of trouble.

Based on the trailer, Out of the Furnace is one to be on the lookout for and is definitely one I look forward to seeing. And not only do Bale and Affleck appear to giving top-notch performances, the rest of the cast ain’t too shabby, featuring the likes of Forrest Whitaker, Zoe Saldana, Woody Harrelson, Willem Dafoe and Sam Shepard also star.

Out of the Furnace opens in limited release on November 27 before going nationwide on December 6.

Movie News: Sam Mendes confirmed as director for Bond 24

Well it’s been on the docket for a little while now, but it’s finally been confirmed that Sam Mendes will be back to direct Bond 24. It’s been speculated for awhile but it was announced this afternoon via this press release:

CULVER CITY, Calif., July 11, 2013 – Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, EON Productions; Gary Barber, Chairman & CEO, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer; Michael Lynton, CEO, Sony Entertainment, Inc, and Amy Pascal, Co-Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment today announced that Daniel Craig will once again return as the legendary British secret agent in the 24th James Bond film and Sam Mendes will also return to direct the screenplay written by John Logan. The film is set for release in UK theaters on October 23, 2015 and in US theaters on November 6, 2015.

SKYFALL™, the 23rd James Bond film, took in $1.1 billion worldwide and set a new mark as the highest-grossing film of all time in the UK; it was the best-selling Bond film on DVD/Blu-ray and was the most critically acclaimed film in the history of the longest-running film franchise.

Commenting on the announcement, Wilson and Broccoli said, “Following the extraordinary success of SKYFALL, we’re really excited to be working once again with Daniel Craig, Sam Mendes and John Logan.”

“I am very pleased that by giving me the time I need to honour all my theatre commitments, the producers have made it possible for me to direct Bond 24. I very much look forward to taking up the reins again, and to working with Daniel Craig, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for a second time,” said Mendes.

Barber added, “We are thrilled to reunite the extraordinary talents of director Sam Mendes with our star Daniel Craig for the next great Bond adventure.” He added, “As evidenced by the phenomenal success of our last collaboration with EON Productions and Sony, the incredible legacy of this 51-year-old franchise continues to amaze.”

Lynton and Pascal said, “It’s a privilege to work on the Bond films. EON, John Logan and Sam Mendes have come up with an extraordinary follow up to SKYFALL and we, along with our partners at MGM, can’t wait to share this new chapter with audiences all over the world.”

Skyfallis probably my favorite Bond movie of all-time so this is pretty exciting news to me and I’d say the same for most people as well. And given the serious nature of the last film and the elements that occurred, I think this will be the right movie in moving the franchise forward with aftermath of the events in Skyfall. Mendes is a great director and this is a great choice for Bond.

Movie News: Another amazing photo of Jamie Foxx as Electro

Yesterday we got our first look at Jamie Foxx as Electro in a poster that featured Spider-Man facing off against Electro giving us our first glimpse of Foxx in the blue attire.

Well now, we’ve got a different view of Foxx as Electro and he definitely has the villain thing going. I’m sure we’ll se more of these as Comic-Con approaches very soon. Check it out.

Electro

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is due in theaters April 2, 2014

Movie Trailer: Jeff Bridges is a grizzled wizard in Seventh Son

Jeff Bridges plays a wizard. That’s all you really need to know about Seventh Son.

Today, we got the first trailer for the fantasy epic based on Joseph Delaney’s The Wardstone Chronicles. Bridges plays Master Gregory, a wizard/knight who trains a young apprentice to combat a witch and save mankind. Julianne Moore stars as the witch Mother Malkin.

Seventh Son actually looks pretty good, a sort of mix between Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings (both of which I love). And it features Jeff … FREAKIN’ … Bridges as a grizzled wizard. It certainly looks better than R.I.P.D.

Seventh Son hits theaters on January 17, 2014.

Movie News: Spidey faces off against Electro for The Amazing Spider-Man 2

It appears as if Spider-Man may have his hands full with his latest foe.

Today, we got our first official complete look at Electro, one of many villains the Web Slinger will be squaring off against in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, via the newest cover issue of Entertainment Weekly. Electro, played by Jamie Foxx, certainly looks a lot better than the all-CGI Lizard from the first film and should prove to be a better villain overall. He’ll be one of many villains as The Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and The Green Goblin (Chris Cooper) are also slated to make appearances.

More news on The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which is directed by Marc Webb and stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone,  is expected at next week’s Comic-Con in San Diego. A teaser trailer perhaps?

Movie Trailer: Spike Lee’s Oldboy follows original pretty closely

4

If you haven’t seen Park Chan-wood’s original Olboy, you need to. It’s an amazing film with some pretty famous fight scenes that are incredible. The story takes some odd turns but it’s very, very good.

And we finally get the first, and a Red-Band at that, trailer for Spike Lee’s remake of Oldboy. The film stars Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley, and Samuel L. Jackson. Brolin plays the main character and by the trailer, Lee’s remake looks to follow the original pretty closely but it definitely has a 2013 feel to it. It’s obviously in English too and has some culture differences because of that, which you could expect. Because I loved the first one, I was a little hesitant about this project, but it actually looks pretty descent so it’s peaked my curiosity.

Fair warning, this is a Red-Band trailer so expect a bit more.

Oldboy comes to us October 25.

Movie News: Guillermo del Toro says Pacific Rim will find its audience

Again, I can’t express how excited I am for Pacific Rim that is set to come out on Friday. In an interview with Digital Spy, Guillermo Del Toro discussed the high stakes of Pacific Rim, especially given the fact that it’s an original piece, and how he applied his own personal touches to make this a fun summer blockbuster.

Del Toro also went on to say that Pacific Rim isn’t the only chance for original summer blockbusters as he mentioned Elysium coming up and that it’s important to see more movies like that.

This interview is pretty good and a fun watch as we prepare ourselves for the awesomeness that will be Pacific Rim this weekend.

Movie News: Teaser poster arrives for Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Earlier today, Captain America: The Winter Soldier posted what is probably the most grim poster of the year with Cap’s shield faded, battleworn and is just enough to get the fans excited. I liked the first one and I loved Cap in The Avengers last year so I’ll be on board to see how this plays out. Plus, I’m a fan of the Winter Soldier story arc so this should be fun.

The addition of Robert Redford makes this movie more class too. While he has nothing to do with this poster, I just wanted to throw that out there. But anyway, in case you haven’t seen it yet, here is the lovely poster that the internet craved over today.

Movie Trailer: Nicolas Cage hunts down John Cusack in The Frozen Ground

A film about chasing down a serial killer starring Nicolas Cage and John Cusack? Yeah, I’m sold.

We recently got the trailer for The Frozen Ground, starring Nicolas Cage as an Alaska State Trooper who’s on the hunt for a serial killer played by John Cusack. The film, from first-time writer and director Scott Walker, is based on actual events and also stars Vanessa Hudgens.

The Frozen Ground doesn’t cover any new territory, but it’s definitely one I’d like to check out at some point.

The Frozen Ground hits theaters on August 23.

Movie Trailer: International preview for Lovelace features no shortage of sex

Last week, we got the first trailer for Lovelace. One thing was missing, however: the sex.

Well, that’s now changed, as today we got the international trailer for the biopic based on porn star Linda Lovelace’s rise and fall. And sex is certainly aplenty, showcasing Lovelace’s abilities.

The international is much better overall, too, as it doesn’t make Lovelace look like some generic biopic. The look and feel of the film is nice and the cast (featuring Amanda Seyfried in the title role) is pretty great.

Lovelace opens on August 9.

Movie Series: Cronos (Guillermo del Toro)

Director: Guillermo Del Toro
Writers: Guillermo Del Toro
Stars: Federico Luppi, Ron Perlman, Claudio Brook

Synopsis: A mysterious device designed to provide its owner with eternal life resurfaces after four hundred years, leaving a trail of destruction in its path.

[/info]

DIRECTION
Guillermo Del Toro’s first feature length film, Cronos, is a great representation for the direction that Del Toro would take as a director. It’s grim and dark, yet focused and has a central story that comes together well while being in a fantasy world. The movie is realistically shot and the central themes of the movie can be translated as the same, even though our main protagonist is a vampire. There are some great transition shots and Del Toro uses his camera purposely to showcase the vampire themes used here. He gets pretty good performances and the balance of English and Spanish adds to the films uniqueness.

Grade: B+

[divider]

SCRIPT
The story here is pretty engagement and unique for a vampire genre film. It centers around Federico Luppi’s character, who finds this device that was designed by an alchemist several hundred years in the past and has the ability to give “eternal life”. And by eternal life, it turns you into a vampire. What makes this story so engaging though, is the singular focus it has on Luppi’s character and how this device changes his life and the devastating consequences that follow. The story comes together pretty quickly but you see enough character development that the pace doesn’t hurt the story at all. Luppi’s granddaughter is written pretty strangely and seems off the beaten path on the surface but when you examine it further you understand that family ties are close, making it more realistic than you’d think. It lacks closure and the story isn’t epic on any scale but shows the morality issues of having to deal with eternal life as a vampire.

Grade: B+

[divider]

PERFORMANCES
Luppi, as the central character, gives a pretty good performance and really is convincing as a vampire who doesn’t really want to be one. The effects to him are devastating to him and his family. He’s not interesting in eternal life and his performance comes across as exactly that. Ron Perlman, who’s been in almost every Del Toro film, is a bad guy who says he’s from the early 90’s. The role and performance comes across as such and is delivered well for the day it was shot in. The other casts are just supporting roles that do enough for the film to not be distracting. This is Luppi’s movie though and he does a great job.

Grade: B+

[divider]

SCORE
Javier Álvarez gets the nod to score here and his score is nothing that stands out. It’s kind of boring at time but it does add some nice touches to the story, especially toward the beginning and the set up of the movie. Outside of that, it’s mostly forgettable.

Movie Trailer: Kevin Hart goes on a Ride Along with Ice Cube

Would you do a ride along in Atlanta to get approval to marry the love of your life? Kevin Hart would.

That’s the premise for Ride Along, the new film featuring Hart and Ice Cube (who Hart’s character is trying to get approval from). And after seeing the recently-released teaser trailer, it looks like it could be pretty funny.

But Ride Along is directed Tim Story, best (worst?) known for the Fantastic Four films, and written by a virtual newcomer in Greg Coolidge, so that doesn’t do a lot to boost the excitement level much.

Ride Along rolls into theaters on January 17, 2014.

Movie News: Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake gets a poster

0

Park Chan-wook’s 2003 Korean thriller Oldboy is one incredible film. Unfortunately, most people haven’t seen it (after all, there’s subtitles).

Well, that’s about to change, as Oldboy is getting an American remake thanks to Spike Lee and FilmDistrict. And today, we got a new poster for the film, which revolves around a man mysteriously being imprisoned and isolated for 20 years before suddenly being set free. The poster, which is reportedly an actual frame from the film, looks nice (certainly better than all the recent photoshopped ones) and definitely gives a sense of the wild ride people are in for.

With Lee directing and a cast that includes Josh Brolin (who’s climbing out of the box), Samuel L. Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen, Michael Imperioli and Sharlto Copley, Oldboy is certainly a remake to get excited about. Whether the brutal violence and crazy twist and turns from the original will remain is another matter.

Oldboy hits theaters on October 25.

Movie News: Warner Brothers sues The Weinstein Company over The Butler title

In what is one of the craziest teenage girl fights I’ve ever seen from “professional” movie studios, Warner Brothers has sued The Weinstein Company and won an initial ruling over the movie title of The Butler.

According to reports, Warner Brothers won a ruling last week against The Weinstein Company for the movie title The Butler, which they claim was an infringement over the Warner Brothers 1916 silent short film, The Butler. The Weinstein Company is now forced to change all of their current marketing materials to a different name, which will be a huge pain considering the movie is supposed to come out in about a month. They have appealed and hired attorney David Boies who will likely file an anti-trust lawsuit in response. He also issued this statement:

The suggestion that there is a danger of confusion between TWC’s 2013 feature movie and a 1917 short that has not been shown in theaters, television, DVDs, or in any other way for almost a century makes no sense. The award has no purpose except to restrict competition and is contrary to public policy.

All of this is a little ridiculous given the fact that most (and I mean like 98% of the general public) people will not know of the 1916 silent film and even if they do it’s highly unlikely they’ll be confused on which movie is out in theaters. Rumors are speculating that part of this is in response to TWC’s objection to Warner Brothers film, The Good Lie, in which TWC claimed it was too similar to their film, The Good Life. Warner Brothers’ attorney has also released letters recently claiming The Weinsteins have abused the title registry to use it to their advantage.

All of this seems like incredibly petty fighting like two teenage girls over a boy who winked at one girl even though the other girl liked him and the she knew it. See how dumb that sentence reads? Someone please get WB and TWC together so they can kiss and make up? While this is probably good (and free) publicity for The Weinsteins, The Butler, it’s all an unnecessary exercise in stupidity.
