Movie Trailer: The East

In what is Zal Batmanglij’s second feature length film, The East, has a revenge premise we’ve seen before, but it looks to take a very dark tone that is almost horror-ish. The movie stars Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd, who I think is a great fit for a film like this and will most likely carry it for the most part. I’m very curious how Ellen Page will fit into this film. The movie seems to be very different for her, but she seems to be a major element to the movie. Overall, I’m semi-excited for this movie. I’m an Ellen Page fan which keeps me interested. What do you think?

The East opens on May 31.

Movie Trailer: Prince Avalanche

David Gordon Green has a new movie coming out called Prince Avalanche, which is based off of an Icelandic film called Either Way. This film is getting back to Green’s small, independent filmmaking which looks like a good spot for him. Green is known for his comedies such as Your Highness and Pineapple Express, which are both movies I enjoyed. They weren’t great films by any means, but I enjoyed the silliness they brought.

The story follows two highway maintenance workers who spend their summer out in the countryside, developing a friendship and driving each other crazy. It will star Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch. Based off the trailer, I’m semi-excited for the project. I liked the trailer but I’m not 100% sold on Hirsch and the basic premise. What do you guys think?

Prince Avalanche hits select theaters on August 9.

Podcast: Trance – Extra Film

In this edition of Extra Film, Nate and JD break down Danny Boyle’s new film, Trance.

Movie Review: Trance sends you into amazing world of illusion

Director: Danny Boyle
Writers: Joe Ahearne, John Hodge
Stars: James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel, Rosario Dawson

Synopsis: An art auctioneer who has become mixed up with a group of criminals partners with a hypnotherapist in order to recover a lost painting.

DIRECTION
I usually love Danny Boyle as a director and Trance falls into that, “I enjoyed this, but never need to see it again” category. The big reason for that is mostly because of the script though. Trance tries to fall into the Inception, mind-busting, plot-turning kind of film, but it doesn’t quite hold up to that kind of level. The biggest win Boyle has with this film is making you fall into the world of trance he is trying to create. The hypnosis, word-bending shots and cinematography is amazing. He uses a lot of bright vibrant colors and creates an environment that captures you into his world. A lot of the time I wasn’t sure if I was in a trance or if it was real world. Considering the script (which is what brings this down for Boyle), I think Boyle does a good job of keeping you confused and lost, while engaging you with his interesting characters. And his visual style I loved. The performances and the score were also done really well.

SCRIPT
I have a love/hate relationship with this script. The characters are very interesting to me. I love Rosario Dawson and James McVoy’s characters as they are looking for something very specific. McVoy is confused and trying to figure out who he is, which up until the end you’re not really sure. Dawson on the other hand is fighting for who she is after a tragic circumstance and her craft is very manipulative. The dialouge with Dawsons character is amazing and Boyle does a great job of using it to provoke certain emotions. I love how, in the middle of crazy circumstance, their stories are intertwined which keeps the story in a vibrant spot. That being said, it rely’s heavily on coincidences and the ending ruins the first hour and half. When the script starts bring itself together, it more or less loses itself and the story could of just been told in 20 minutes. Where Inception has it’s twists and turn, it leaves you with an understanding of where the character is while leaving it open ended, which worked great. Not that Trance had to have the same ending, I feel like the story took way too much time to get to what was really a set of circumstances that were manipulated.

PERFORMANCES
I thought the performances were pretty good and I was really drawn in to Dawson’s character, Elizabeth. Her words and actions really put you on the couch sort of speak and I felt like I was in the world of Trance with her character. James McAvoy was good too but I didn’t really care for his character much. I think he does a great job of making you feel like you’re on his side though. Vincent Cassel does a great also and the tables turn on his character is some ways that are pretty unconventional. The other supporting cast is pretty average for the most part. Dawson stands out the most to me here though and it doesn’t hurt that I love her character the most.

SCORE
Rick Smith’s score is amazing. It’s got a strong, underground dance vibe which is very fitting to the movie. It’s electronic in nature with some serious tones where appropriate. The final 20 minutes of the film is easily the best part though. It ramps up so appropriately and is so engaging. It’s a fun listen to outside of the film and is one of my favorites so far in 2013.

Movie Trailer: Monsters University

The final trailer for Pixar’s Monsters University has hit.

As a big fan of Monsters, Inc., I’m looking forward to this prequel. I’m looking forward to seeing how the relationship between Mike and Sulley (played by Billy Crystal and John Goodman, respectively) got started. Looks like a lot of fun.

Monsters University opens on June 21.

Movie News: Sean Combs and Terry Crews cast in Draft Day

With the 2013 NFL Draft kicking off tonight, it’s been reported that Sean Combs and Terry Crews have been added to the new sports movie Draft Day. Draft Day, which already stars Kevin Costner, plans to film during the actual NFL Draft tonight at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. After the draft, the remaining footage is expected to be shot in Cleveland.

The movie also stars Jennifer Garner, Denis Leary and Chadwick Boseman and will be directed by Ivan Reitman.

The story will follow the manager of the Cleveland Browns who struggles to acquire the top draft pick (imagine that) on the day of the draft. The story is intriguing since the Browns are always awful (sorry Browns fans) and so it makes this story believable. I like Sean Combs and Terry Crews as actors so this decision along with the cast they already have makes me excited for it. The NFL draft is always filled with drama and excitement so I hope they are able to capture that on the big screen.

Movie News: Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt may pair up for Guys And Dolls

Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt may have found their next project. After a long process, 20th Century Fox has closed the movie rights to Guys And Dolls and will start the development of the musical going to the big screen soon. Tatum and Gordon-Levitt will be filling in some heavy roles made famous by Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando. Currently, there is no writer or director.

There have been lots of rumors from Russell Crowe to Vin Diesel, Hugh Jackman and others to be the lead roles for this film. The big issue came when Jo Loesser, the widow of songwriter Frank Loesser, was never willing to strike a deal to sign over the rights for the film adaptation until now.

The story, if you don’t know, is centered around gangsters and gamblers in the 1920’s and 30′ where Nathan Detroit (Sinatra) has a town full of captive gamblers and wants to set up a floating crap game but needs money to do it. He bets his pal Sky Masterson (Brando) that Sky can’t get the wholesome Sarah Brown (Jean Simmons) — who runs a mission — to go with him to Havana. The musical with Sinatra and Brando first appeared in 1950 and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. Guys and Dolls went to the big screen in 1955.

While it’s intriguing, I’m not sure about Tatum singing in a musical. Gordon Levitt has already proved himself to me, but I’m not 100% sold on Tatum. He’s one of the biggest and most sought after stars right now, which makes sense why 20th Century Fox wants him. That being said, I actually think it’s a great choice and I think he’s versatile enough to make it a good film. It still needs the right writer and director to make it great though.

Featured: A Rough Start to 2013 In Film

Each year, the anticipation for what new movies are coming out are always exciting to me. My passion and love for film grows all the time and it’s always fun to see what each new year will bring. And with 2012 being a great year for film, in my opinion, I was excited for 2013 had to offer on paper. I knew it’d be difficult to live up to 2012 as a whole but we do have a long time to see how 2013 will compare. However, it’s not off to the greatest of starts.

Early arrivals Gangster Squad and A Good Day to Die Hard seemed to have potential, but in the end they were mostly let downs. I did enjoy Gangster Squad but it was a disappointment considering I had a little bit more hope for it. Nothing really jumped out in January or February. Identity Thief had its moments but was a forgettable comedy. The Last Stand, Hansel and Gretal, Movie 43, and Parker were some of the bigger names to come out of January that mostly flopped. Broken City, which came out in January, was actually a good movie that flew under the radar.

Warm Bodies gave February a nice early start. However, Stand Up Guys and Bullet to the Head also came out the same weekend and both were average at best. I never got to see Snitch, but it stars The Rock, and I tend to like him as an actor which would give me hope for that film. Outside of that, the only other films worth mentioning are Safe Haven and Side Effects. Side Effects was a good movie and was the first real film of 2013. It had a great story accompanied by great acting and directing.

March was a much, much better month overall. Movies including, Dead Man Down, Spring Breakers, Oz the Great and Powerful, The Croods, and The Place Beyond the Pines were all good movies. Spring Breakers, Dead Man Down, and The Place Beyond the Pines were really great movies and are probably my favorite overall so far this year. In Spring Breakers, we saw my favorite James Franco character I’ve ever seen. The rest of the month was forgettable to me.

I think April has had it’s ups and downs so far. 42 and Oblivion were good, but not great by any means. 42 was probably a little disappointing to me, which I go into detail why in my review. Terrence Malick’s new film, To the Wonder, was a big let down after the Tree of Life in 2011. There are quite a few films we haven’t seen yet so it’s hard to judge April and there more than a few I’d still like to see. Movies, such as Pain and Gain and Mud, I anticipate will bump up April overall for me.

Overall though, I feel like the movie circuit has been lackluster to begin 2013. At the same time, this is a difficult time of the year where studios tend to hold off on their best works and wait for either the blockbuster or Oscar seasons. I know there are a lot of movies that has come out that I haven’t mentioned, but from what I’ve seen (and I’ve seen a lot) there isn’t too much to mention. There are few limited release films (Into the White, Stoker, Emperor and a few others) that I really want to see too. There’s also a great documentary called Girl Rising that’s great and highly recommended.

And yes, I know there are a lot of great things on the docket for 2013. I still have a lot of hope for this year.

Feel free to let me know your thoughts!

Movie News: The Expendables 3 has found its director

The Expendables 3 has a director.

After hinting on Twitter that Sylvester Stallone wanted a young, fresh filmmaker – much like himself when he directed Rocky – he finally revealed who will be directing the next film in The Expendables series: Patrick Hughes. Hughes only has one feature film under his belt, 2010’s Red Hill, a modern day western starring Ryan Kwanten. He shot the film in 20 days on a $500,000 budget.

Stallone at one point toyed around with the idea of having Mel Gibson direct and John Woo also expressed interest. Either of those choices would’ve been fantastic but I like the idea of Stallone giving a young up-and-comer a chance.

Who will return for The Expendables 3 is still unknown but expect Stallone and Jason Statham to definitely be in alongside newcomers Jackie Chan, Nic Cage and Wesley Snipes.

Movie Trailer: Star Trek Into Darkness

Star Trek Into Darkness is getting closer and closer and I’m getting more and more excited – especially after seeing this new Japanese TV spot.

I loved Star Trek and can’t wait to see what J.J. Abrams and Co. have in store for the sequel. I particularly can’t wait to see Benedict Cumberbatch’s turn as the villain. He is absolutely amazing as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC’s Sherlock series and it will be nice for more people to finally know his name.

Star Trek Into Darkness hits theaters on May 17.

Movie News: Lee Pace likely to be Guardians’ villain

Lee Pace is in the final stages of negotiation to play the villain in the Disney and Marvel film, Guardians of the Galaxy.

As for who that specific villain is yet, well we don’t know. The cast currently features Chris Pratt as Star Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer and Michael Rooker will voice Yondu.

Last year, Pace was in the running for the role of Star Lord before Pratt ultimately took that prize. His audition however impressed Marvel and kept him in mind as the main villain. Pace was recently in Spielberg’s Lincoln and had a supporting role in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2. It could be a great choice as I like him as an actor and it’ll be fun to see him in a big role like this.

Production will start in June and Disney will release the film on Aug. 1, 2014.

Movie Trailer: The Bling Ring

The first thought that comes to my mind when watching the new trailer for The Bling Ring is meh.

The only reason I’m even remotely interested in seeing this is because it’s written and directed by Sofia Coppola and stars Emma Watson, who I fell in love with in last year’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Other than that, I’m not really all that excited for The Bling Ring.

The Bling Ring hits theaters on June 12.

TV Spot: After Earth

Monday was Earth Day so it’s only appropriate that we’d get a new TV spot for After Earth shortly thereafter.

The new spot features more Will Smith voiceover and some pretty terrible CGI. And once again fails to mention that M. Night Shyamalan is directing this.

I may be in the minority of people who are actually looking forward to this. I love post-apocalyptic films, especially ones starring the usually reliable Smith (see I Am Legend). And I’m actually not a Shyamalan hater like most people.

After Earth comes out on May 31.

Movie News: A sequel to Dodgeball is coming

A Dodgeball sequel is coming.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Clay Tarver has been tapped to write the script for Dodgeball 2, the sequel to 2004’s Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. The story will reportedly focus on Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller’s characters (rivals in the first film) teaming together to take down a common foe. Tarver’s only other writing cred is for the 2001 thriller Joy Ride, in which he co-wrote with J.J. Abrams.

Like most people, I was a big fan of Dodgeball, especially since I played it a lot in college. The film was a lot of fun with a lot of cool characters I would love to see together on the big screen again. Who can forget the five D’s of dodgeball?

Movie News: First look at Halle Berry’s Storm in X-Men: Days of Future Past

Have you been dying to see what Storm will look like in X-Men: Days of Future Past? Well, here you go.

Director Bryan Singer recently tweeted out a photo of Storm, who will be played once again by Halle Berry (who is pregnant in the photo). Her character won’t look that much different from her character in the original trilogy (check out the bottom photo).

Movie Trailer: The Wolverine

Who’s ready for some Wolverine?

Today we got another look at The Wolverine with a Japanese trailer that is very similar to the trailers we got a couple of weeks ago but with a couple of changes. The only aspects that get me excited for this film are James Mangold (who directed the awesome 3:10 to Yuma), Hugh Jackman and samurais.

The Wolverine claws into theaters on July 26.

Movie Trailer: A new trailer has been released for Thor: The Dark World

A new trailer for Thor: The Dark World was released this morning. The Marvel Phase 2 Project looks like its continuation will be stellar. We are already excited for what Iron Man 3 will probably be and based off this trailer, I’m excited to see what Thor will bring us.
