Movie Trailer: First trailer for The Fifth Estate starring Benedict Cumberbatch

0

In what should give everyone lots of opinions, the first trailer for The Fifth Estate starring Benedict Cumberbatch has arrived. In a world where anything can go viral really quickly, sensitive information is almost impossible to keep that way. The Wikileaks story is a pretty interesting one and it looks like Bill Condon has made the story even more so. If you’re not familiar with Condon, he’s a pretty good director with films based on true stories with films such as Gods and Monsters and Kinsey. But unfortunately he’s also given us The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.

That being said, he’s also directed performances that led to five Oscar nominations. And Cumberbatch has the talent that could lead to another. His performance here based off the trailers seems a little weird with his dialouge but the story is extremely fascinating and I think Cumberbatch will make it come alive as he always does.

Anyway, check out the trailer and let us know what you think!

The Fifth Estate hits theaters on October 11th.

Movie News: Ron Howard and Tom Hanks to re-team for Inferno

0

Are you ready for more adventures with symbologist Robert Langdon?

According to Deadline, Ron Howard and Tom Hanks will reunite for Inferno, their third film together based on Dan Brown’s novels. The other two, 2006’s The Da Vinci Code and 2009’s Angels & Demons, were both pretty big hits.

Hanks will reprise his role as Langdon, a Harvard symbologist who this time around will be dealing with Dante’s The Divine Comedy. David Koepp, who scripted this summer’s Man of Steel, is on-board to write after doing Angels & Demons.

I was not a big fan of the film adaptations of The Da Vinci Code or Angels & Demons, so I’m not exactly looking forward to Inferno – although, the fact the the story involves Dante and his journey through hell, purgatory and heaven does have me somewhat intrigued.

Inferno is expected to hit theaters on December 18, 2015.

Movie News: First pic of Sean Penn in action as The Gunman

Okay, when I think of Sean Penn I don’t necessarily think awesome action star, but I must admit that this pic seems to show he can do it. It’s the first look we get of Penn in Pierre Morel’s movie, The Gunman and he looks the part. He kind of has this older, Liam Neeson, kick-butt thing going on.

Penn is playing Jim Terrier who is a former mercenary who’s been sucked back into the business and it involves Javier Bardem’s character who is a shady businessman and Idris Elba as a mysterious assassin.

And given the type of actor Penn is, I imagine he’ll give the character some personality along with the action-y stuff that’ll be going on. He’s also bulked up from his role in Gangster Squad where he played a former boxer turned Mafia boss. And he was incredible in that too.

While this is pretty different than what we’ve seen from him before, it’ll be exciting to see how it comes out.

Sean Penn The Gunman

The Gunman is currently shooting, with a probable release date sometime next year.

Movie News: Comic-Con poster for How to Train Your Dragon 2

If you’re going to be at Comic-Con over the next week or so, you’ll have a lot to look forward to and lots of opportunities to get your hands on some cool stuff. One of them will be a new poster for How to Train Your Dragon 2.

Here we have a Vine from Dreamworks Animation with the director for How to Train Your Dragon 2, Dean DeBlois who is showing off Drew Struzan’s art for the film. We’re pretty excited for it.

Movie Trailer: 12 Years a Slave is Oscar-worthy

0

Ring, ring! We have an Oscar contender, folks!

We recently got the first trailer for Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave, a true story based on Solomon Northrup, a free man who was captured and sold into slaver – and it has Academy Awards written all over it.

The director, Hunger and Shame‘s McQueen, and cast are excellent. Highlighting the performances are Chiwetel Ejiofor, who plays Northrup and looks to do some amazing work, and Michael Fassbender (one of the best actors working today), who plays an evil slave owner. But that’s just the beginning, as Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti, Paul Dano, Alfre Woodard and Sarah Paulson are also starring.

12 Years a Slave is now one of my most anticipated films for the rest of the year, and I can’t wait to see it.

12 Years a Slave hits theaters on October 18.

Movie News: Tom Cruise is ready for battle in Edge of Tomorrow poster

0

Tom Cruise is ready to battle some aliens.

We recently got the first poster for Edge of Tomorrow, a film where Cruise plays a soldier who experiences a time loop of his last day of war against aliens. Based on the poster, this film looks like it could be pretty cool, if not a bit cheesy and over-the-top.

Edge of Tomorrow (which was re-titled All You Need Is Kill) is based on a book and is directed by Doug Liman, best known for The Bourne Identity and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. It also stars Emily Blunt and Bill Paxton.

Edge of Tomorrow hits theaters on June 6, 2014.

Movie News: Teaser poster for Godzilla is excellent

0

Now this is a poster.

We recently got a teaser poster for Godzilla, via IGN, which will be exclusive to those lucky fans who will be going to Comic-Con later this week. The poster is excellent and makes me excited to see more on this film.

As a big fan of director Gareth Edwards’ first film, 2010 Monsters, I’m really looking forward to the new take on Godzilla. And the cast is pretty great, featuring the likes of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe, David Strathairn and Sally Hawkins. I think Godzilla could surprise some people come next year.

Movie News: Joseph Gordon-Levitt may be Doctor Strange

0

Joseph Gordon-Levitt may soon be joining the Marvel Universe.

According to Latino Review, the 32-year-old actor is rumored to be up for the title role in the upcoming Doctor Strange film. For those of you who don’t know, Doctor Strange is a sorcerer tasked with protecting Earth against mystical and magical threats.

Gordon-Levitt would be a great addition to the Marvel Universe, which already features high-caliber actors like Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Natalie Portman, Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson. Gordon-Levitt is one of the best young actors working today and he’s fantastic in pretty much everything he’s in.

One interesting tidbit if all of this is that Gordon-Levitt was last seen in last year’s The Dark Knight Rises and has been widely regarded as the best possible choice to play the next Batman, which is a DC property. So if he is cast as Doctor Strange, I think it’s safe to say he won’t also be Batman.

Movie Trailer: The Boxtrolls is fantasy stop-motion beauty

Did you love Coraline and ParaNorman like most people? Well, then get ready for The Boxtrolls.

The newest fantasy stop-motion film from Laika Studios isn’t coming out for over a year but we recently got a teaser trailer for it – and it looks very good and very cute.

The story for The Boxtrolls centers around a young orphaned boy who is taken in by box-shaped trash collectors who live underground. The voice acting crew consists of Elle Fanning, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Ben Kingsley and Tracy Morgan.

The BoxTrolls opens on September 26, 2014.

Box Office Report: Despicable Me 2 claims top spot again; Pacific Rim finishes in 3rd

0

The Minions are unstoppable right now.

For the second straight weekend, the weird, little guys have helped Despicable Me 2 claim the top spot at the box office. The Universal animated film hauled in $44.8 million domestically and $55.5 million overseas to bring its total gross to $472.4 million in just two weeks.

Grown-Ups 2 debuted in second with $42.5 million, making it star Adam Sandler’s second-best opening ever behind The Longest Yard‘s $58.6 million in 2005. The Sony comedy also stars Chris Rock, Kevin James and David Spade.

Coming in a disappointing third place was Guillermo del Toro’s robots-vs.-monsters epic Pacific Rim, which opened with $38.3 million for Warner Bros. With positive buzz and worldwide appeal (one of the stars is from Japan), the film should do pretty well overseas. Pacific Rim is visually stunning with a story that actually makes you care about the characters (even if the acting isn’t all that great).

Rounding out the top five was The Heat with $14 million and The Lone Ranger with $11.1 million.

There are three big releases for this weekend with TurboRed 2, R.I.P.D. and The Conjuring – but will any of them be able to knock off the Minions?

Movie Poll: What is the scariest movie of all-time?

With The Conjuring coming out this week, we thought we’d take a look into some of the scariest movies of all-time. Nate is really excited for this and he’s been looking forward to it for a little while now. This is a pretty broad question and I realized there are a lot of great scary movies. So while there’s only a few options here, feel free to use “other” and let us know what your answer is!

Featured: Why The Lone Ranger should be 20 min long

This last week on the InSession Film Podcast, we reviewed The Lone Ranger and for the most part we picked it apart like most people have. The first two hours are boring, dull and empty in almost every way but the last 20 minutes is just incredible. If the movie would of just been the last twenty minutes, even with no set up or backstory, it’d probably make my Top 5 for the best films of the year so far. It’s so much fun and wrangles in everything that is awesome about the Lone Ranger. Get rid of the controversial Tonto backstory, the boring John Reid and just give us the over-the-top action we wanted to see. If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

This weekend, we thought about taking some friends to the drive-in to see Pacific Rim, in which it played at the same time as The Lone Ranger. Well Pacific Rim just happens to be 20 minutes shorter than The Lone Ranger and we joked about taking our friends to watch the last 20 minutes after Pacific Rim, which would of made for a way better film if that’s all you saw. We ended up not getting a chance to do that, but if you want to see The Lone Ranger, I’d recommend something similar and you’ll love it.

Anyway, check out Nate and I’s entire conversation of The Lone Ranger on Episode 20 of the InSession Film Podcast below.

Movie Trailer: I Declare War takes a unique approach to a childhood favorite

Every kid plays war with their friends; it’s just a childhood staple. That’s what I Declare War is all about.

Today, we got the trailer for I Declare War, an R-rated film about kids playing war where the make-believe and reality collide. The film hit the festival circuit last year and I’ve heard nothing but great things about it, with most people saying it’s in the vein of Stand By Me. It definitely takes a unique approach to the childhood game, and as somebody who played war as a kid, I’m definitely looking forward to this.

I Declare War is out on VOD on July 26 before being released theatrically on August 30.

Movie Review: Pacific Rim brings the awesome

Director: Guillermo del Toro
Writers:  Travis Beacham (screenplay), Guillermo del Toro
Stars: Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman

Synopsis: As a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse.

[/info]

DIRECTION
Pacific Rim is easily one of Guillermo del Toro’s best work and he brings to life an environment that is just incredible. The aesthetic is dropped on your lap in the first moments as the film opens with a montage of how the Kaiju (Japanese word for monsters) came to Earth and started to wreak havoc. The montage also went on to explain how the Jaeger (German word for hunter) program came to be so they could fight the Kaiju and save Earth. While the pacing was a little quick in the beginning, you get enough of a sense to know and believe in the world we’ve been introduced to and you get all of the information you need to understand what’s going on. And then it’s on. The fight scenes are incredible and breath-taking with amazing and gorgeous visuals that bring this world to life and it’s so much fun. The detail of the Jaegers and the Kaiju are incredible and so realistic, making it some of the best CGI out there. Simply, it’s bad-ass. While all the main battles take place at night, the night lights del Toro uses and the intentional neon lights used in the design of the creatures, make it very easy to follow along with what’s going on. However there’s more story here than you’d think in a movie like this; I mean c’mon, it’s del Toro we’re talking about. The drifting elements that combine the two Jaeger pilots create an amazing relationship dynamic that makes this movie standout. The two pilots have to become one to fight better and defeat the enemy and that concept is amazing. The exploration of it, while broad, was done really well and is a huge aspect to why this film is amazing. Del Toro’s musical choices is also incredible and I ‘ll get to that in a bit. Outside of the incredible visuals, del Toro is amazing with his camera work as usual. He places his camera in specific places to capture not only the fights, but the aesthetic of the cities we’re thrown into as well as the conversations we’re exposed to. If you walk out of this world and you don’t have fun, you may want to check your pulse.

SCRIPT
The story here is pretty good and original which makes this film unique and a lot of fun. However, Pacific Rim will struggle to find a big audience because of it though. The Kaiju have found a portal to the human world deep in the pacific and have started war to ravage and destroy the human race. To counter that, the countries of the world drop politics and come together to start the Jaeger program to save the planet, which is an interesting concept. We’re thrown into the Jaeger pretty quickly after we meet Charlie Hunnam’s character and his brother, who are Jaeger pilots and two of the world’s best. Without giving away spoilers, Hunnam is faced with some emotional baggage that he deals with throughout the movie and who could blame the guy? After awhile the Kaiju have evolved and start winning the war, which means the Jaeger program may be shut down. Other program attempts fail and it’s the Jaegers who have to come to the rescue. Charlie Day’s character, who is a Kaiju science expert, finds some information that helps the Jaeger program executives come up with a plan that is thought out well. Within all of that, we are exposed to some pretty interesting relationships, some explored and some not, and some come full circle in unexpected places. They bring emotion, for the most part, and Idris Elba character’s speech at the end of the film is moving and executed perfectly. While some of it may be cheesy, it’s expected for a film like this and the story comes together well given the fact we know what’s going to happen and how it will play out.

PERFORMANCES
The performances may be the weakest link of the whole movie but it doesn’t distract you from the main elements of the film. Charlie Hunnam won’t win any Oscars for his performance here but he’s believable enough that you care about him when he’s in the Jaeger, which is what matters. Hunnam doesn’t quite have the emotional bandwidth which is the main criticm of the movie as the lead character. You lose out an important element because while it’s written well, he doesn’t quite pull it out, but again, you get enough to not lose yourself with what he’s doing. His chemistry with Rinko Kikuchi however is a mixed bag which may take away from the film a little bit though. As his Jaeger partner, Kikuchi does a great job with her role as a fighter and someone who can “drift” with Hunnam’s character. The “romantic” relationship they have is not explored well and should of been left out. Charlie Day and Ron Perlman bring some great comic relief to the movie and while it’s all cheesed out, it adds some fun humor and is what’s needed in a film like this. The star, however, is Idris Elba. Man, is he an amazing actor and he brings it here as Stacker Pentecost. He’s the general for the Jaeger program and he’s a complete bad-ass. Every time he’s on screen, he elevates the movie and even the actors around him. The supporting cast such as Clifton Collins Jr. is pretty good, especially the relationship between Robert Kazinsky and Max Martini characters. I can’t even go into it without welling up a little bit, honestly.

Grade: B+

SCORE
Holy Kaiju is Ramin Djawadi’s score amazing. His score is basically a rock band with a violin or two and it’s awesome. You hear lots of electric guitars and drums and it’s anything but traditional. It’s perfectly fitting to the aesthetic we’re thrown into and the main theme is a lot of fun. You hear the main theme several times throughout the film but it’s never overwhelming. It does have some orchestral elements and it’s blended in perfectly with the rock music to make for a very fun listen to in and out of the movie.

Movie Trailer: How to Train Your Dragon 2 teaser is amazing

0

The new teaser for How to Train Your Dragon 2 was released yesterday and it is pretty awesome. I think it’s what teaser trailer need to look like and tease the movie, which this one does well. The first one was awesome so I’m definitely looking forward to this one.

Look for this trailer to be in theaters when Turbo is released.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 will come to theaters next June.

Movie Trailer: Tom Hanks is Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks

Have you ever wondered how the film Mary Poppins came to be? You will now.

Today we got the trailer for Saving Mr. Banks, a film about Walt Disney trying to make a film on Mary Poppins. Tom Hanks stars as Disney and Emma Thompson stars as P.L. Travers, who authored the world’s best nanny novel. The trailer has a nice look to and the performances look pretty good, but not sure if this is really a story that needs to be told.

Saving Mr. Banks is directed by John Lee Hancock, best known for 2009’s The Blind Side, and also stars Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzman and Bradley Whitmore.

Saving Mr. Banks floats into theaters on December 20.
