Movie Trailer: Tom Hanks is Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks

Have you ever wondered how the film Mary Poppins came to be? You will now.

Today we got the trailer for Saving Mr. Banks, a film about Walt Disney trying to make a film on Mary Poppins. Tom Hanks stars as Disney and Emma Thompson stars as P.L. Travers, who authored the world’s best nanny novel. The trailer has a nice look to and the performances look pretty good, but not sure if this is really a story that needs to be told.

Saving Mr. Banks is directed by John Lee Hancock, best known for 2009’s The Blind Side, and also stars Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzman and Bradley Whitmore.

Saving Mr. Banks floats into theaters on December 20.

  1. This movie definitely looks interesting, and as a former Disney Cast Member, I have an immediate connection to stuff like this. But I certainly recognize that not everyone has that connection.

To your point, Nate, of not being sure if this story needs to be told, you could be right. So I think it really depends on what story they’re really trying to tell.
If they are just telling the story of Mary Poppins, no one really will care.

But if they are telling the story of Walt Disney the man. Now that’s a story worth hearing. The man was a magic maker. And to watch him actually making magic will be awesome.

If the filmmakers are smart, there will be lots of parallels with the story of Mary Poppins really being about saving the father instead of the children, with Walt Disney saving PL Travers (who has become like Mr. Banks) instead of saving the story of Mary Poppins (the children).

In doing so, they filmmakers are not just telling us a story, but giving us a moral lesson as well- which, by the way, is what Disney did with all his films.

So it’ll be interesting to see how this one comes out.

    • Yeah I agree, if they make the story about Walt Disney and how he was able to make all this happen, that could be fun. I’m down to see it.
