Movie Trailer: Don Jon looking hot in Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut

The first trailer for Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s written and directed film Don Jon is here. Gordon-Levitt also starts in the film alongside Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore and Tony Danza. Anne Hathaway, Channing Tatum and Cuba Gooding Jr. all make cameos as in the film as movies stars of a movie within the movie.

The film centers around Gordon-Levitt’s character who is all about his body and women, which is where his nickname comes from. His friends call him “Don Jon” because of his ability to manipulate women into having sex with him all the time. And from what I’ve heard, there’s a lot of it.

Anyway, here’s the first trailer. Don Jon comes to theaters October 18.

Movie News: Spidey looks to stay with Sony for a long time

Late last night, according to Aint It Cool News, rumors surfaced that Sony may be looking to sell the Spider-Man franchise to the Marvel Universe, which would be pretty surprising.

Amy Pascal, who is the co-chair at Sony Pictures Entertainment said that she would “Never ever ever” sell the Spider-Man franchise. She went on to say that she feels the property is directly tied to her legacy at Sony and she’s excited for the new film to come out. If this is true, it doesn’t look like Spidey is leaving Sony any time soon.

While I have liked most of the Spider-Man films, I do think it would be awesome to see such an iconic character in the Marvel Universe, probably where it belongs too. Who wouldn’t want to see Spider-Man team up with Tony Stark and Iron Man as they take down the bad guys?

I understand why Sony doesn’t want to sell the property as it’s made them tons of that green stuff, but c’mon, let the character be where it belongs. That’s just my opinion though. What do you guys think?

Movie News: Lots of motherly love shown in clip from Only God Forgives

Now that’s some motherly love.

Kristin Scott Thomas shows off her acting chops in this clip from Nicholas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives. She rudely and profanely talks to her son (played by Ryan Gosling) and his girlfriend, whom she is meeting for the first time.

Only God Forgives played earlier today at the Cannes Film Festival and received mixed reviews. Refn’s last film, Drive, was outstanding and that alone will get me into the theater to see his latest.

Only God Forgives opens on July 19.

Movie News: PTA’s Inherent Vice adds to its already amazing cast

Paul Thomas Anderson knows how to cast films.

PTA’s next film Inherent Vice already has one of best casts in recent memory with the likes of Joaquin Phoenix, Benicio Del Toro, Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Martin Short, Jena Malone and Kevin O’Connor.

Well now, according to Cigarettes and Red Vines, Sean Penn is in talks to also join the film about a drug-fueled detective who is investigating the disappearance of an ex-girlfriend. It’s based on a novel of the same name by Thomas Pynchon.

The cast for Inherent Vice is shaping up to be one of the best ever, especially when you consider that there are still plenty of roles yet to be cast. And PTA knows how to get the most of his actors as he’s proven with Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood and Phoenix, Amy Adams and Phillip Seymour Hoffman in The Master.

Inherent Vice is currently shooting.

Movie Trailer: The World’s End looks pretty funny

The World’s End reunites the trio that brought us Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. And it looks like they haven’t dropped a beat with this latest trailer.

Director Edgar Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are back for what appears to be an Invasion of the Body Snatchers-type film. This looks pretty funny and the supporting cast including Martin Freeman looks great.

The World’s End opens on October 25.

Movie News: Villain set for The Guardians of the Galaxy?

Do we finally know who will be the villain in Marvel’s The Guardians of the Galaxy? It seems so.

According to JoBlo, the main villain will be Ronan the Accuser, the ruler of the alien race known as the Kree. It was speculated that Thanos would be the main villain since he appeared in a teaser at the end of The Avengers; whether he will appear in the film is still unknown.

As for who will be playing Ronan the Accuser, Lee Pace was recently cast in a “villain” role. Whether he will be playing Ronan or a different villain is still unknown. Pace is part of a cast that also includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Michael Beautista, Michael Rooker and Ophelia Lovibond. The film will be directed by James Gunn.

I know absolutely nothing about The Guardians of the Galaxy but I do like the director and most of the cast. Looks interesting.

The Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters on August 1, 2014.

Movie Trailer: Is Man of Steel the film to beat this summer?

This trailer for Man of Steel, titled “Fate of Your Planet,” is a little bit different than the previous ones and while it’s not quite as epic, it’s very action-y which is a lot of fun. Michael Shannon looks to be a great villain with a lot on the line. This is by far the most I’ve ever been excited for a Superman film.

Man of Steel opens on June 14.

Movie News: New featurette about Pacific Rim’s “drift space” is awesome

So, one of my favorite things about the Pacific Rim trailers are the the dual pilots that operate the jaegers. What’s also cool about that, is the psychic computerized link system they share called drift space. This will create a nice emotional dynamic between the two pilots as they are able to share every secret and thought and the visuals for it look gorgeous. Anyway, enough of me, take a look at this awesome featurette where they explains it further.

Movie News: New Man of Steel character posters like the lens flare

For the first time, the Man of Steel marketing crew hasn’t put out something incredible.

We got three new character posters today featuring Superman, Jor-El and General and they just aren’t very good (especially when you compare them to these earlier posters). They are very simple, out of focus and the lens flare is kind of annoying. But do they dampen my excitement for Man of Steel? In no way whatsoever.

Man of Steel flies into theaters on June 14.

Movie Trailer: New Red-Band Trailer: The Kings of Summer

The Kings of Summer looks hilarious.

We got a new red-band trailer for the film about three teenage boys who, in an act of independence and defiance, build a house in the woods and it looks like it could be one of the year’s funniest. And what a cast: Nick Offerman, Allison Brie, Megan Mullally, Mary Lynn-Rajskub and Kumail Nanjiani.

The Kings of Summer opens in limited release on May 31.

Movie Trailer: The Wolverine

There’s a new trailer for the Hugh Jackman-starring The Wolverine and I think this may be the best one yet. There’s a really good flashback that sets up the character well and then it explodes with all the new action. It’s an interesting take and looks much better the X-Men Origins: Wolverine. What do you think?

The Wolverine hits theaters on July 26.

Movie Series: Before Sunrise (Before Trilogy)

Director: Richard Linklater
Writers: Richard Linklater, Kim Krizan
Stars: Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy

Synopsis: A young man and woman meet on a train in Europe, and wind up spending one romantic evening together in Vienna. Unfortunately, both know that this will probably be their only night together.

[/info]

DIRECTION
Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise is executed flawlessly and is amazingly beautiful. The opening scene really sets the tone for who these characters are and what they are looking for while traveling throughout Europe. The movie is filmed so naturally and realism is the carrying stone as Jessie and Celine wonder throughout Vienna hanging out and engaging in some great conversation. Linklater is superb in capturing the Europe aesthetic and the romanticism that you feel between the characters on screen. The restaurant scene is incredibly gorgeous and you have to love how Linklater lets you feel the raw emotions of these characters as they find themselves in pretending to call friends back home describing how they met each other. Simple visuals, laid back musical tones and incredible performances are the best words to describe the direction here. I love everything about this film and it’s one that both men and women can enjoy as the characters are interesting and the story is real. The naturalism makes it so easy for anyone to engage with this story.

SCRIPT
With any film like this, especially one that only star two people, you need to have a strong script and Linklater brings you one. The dialogue between Jessie and Celine, again, is natural and real which makes it easy for you to follow and puts you right into their shoes. The story is simple as it follows these two characters who spend 24 hours together in Vienna before they must part to go back home. As the day progresses, the romance between the two becomes more passionate and real but at the same time it’s never cheesy or stereotypical by any means. You really get to know these characters well and what they are looking for out of relationship which really ties them together. It’s such a simple script, but it displays the reality of romantic pursuit in a fun, exciting way. And the ending, while a little crushing, is perfectly executed to the theme of the story.

PERFORMANCES
Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy are incredible in this film. The chemistry they have in palpable and the energy is always flowing between the two of them. You really feel yourself rooting for them and you begin thinking about your own story in relation to them as you watch the story unfold. That’s an amazing testament to the performers, as well as the storytellers, and I was on board from the beginning. Hawke does a great job of making you feel his pain as his character his heart broken from a recent break up so he’s a little skeptical to to jump back into anything but Delpy’s character is too desirable to him. Delpy is also great as she’s trying to convince her counterpart that she just wants to be pursued and loved which makes for an interesting dynamic between the two. Both performances are strong, which is needed as their the only main characters in the film.

SCORE
Fred Frith brings a pretty good score that’s mostly in the background which is where it belongs. You don’t have a strong theme here but what you get are tones and musical elements that add to the conversation and are great transitional layers that keep you engaged into the story. Not a fault to Frith as the music was never meant to be a big part of the story, but what he does here is great for the mix of the film. The added soundtrack elements are also pretty good and fitting as well.

Box Office Report: Star Trek Into Darkness doesn’t have bold opening

Star Trek Into Darkness doesn’t go boldly where Star Trek has gone before.

Easily taking the top spot for the weekend was J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness with $70.6 million for the three-day frame and $84.1 million when you add in Wednesday night and Thursday. That’s slightly less than 2009’s Star Trek, which grossed $75.2 million for the weekend and $86.7 million through its first four-and-a-half days.

So is Star Trek Into Darkness a fitting, pleasing sequel to Star Trek – a “disappointment?” Based on the numbers, yes, especially when you consider Paramount publicly predicted a $100 million weekend, which was possible considering the film played in IMAX and in 3D. But you also have to consider that Iron Man 3 and The Great Gatsby are also currently playing in theaters and did well again this weekend.

Iron Man 3 continued its strong run with another $35.2 million to bring its 17-day total to almost $340 million. It also surpassed the $1 billion mark when you add-in its worldwide total. The Great Gatsby grabbed another $23.4 million to bring its total to $90 million.

Rounding out the top five for the weekend were Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain, which grossed $3.1 million for a total of $46.6 million and The Croods, which in its ninth weekend picked up $2.75 million to bring its total to $176.8 million.

Star Trek Into Darkness may be the No. 1 film at the box office for the weekend but don’t expect to stay there. Fast & Furious 6 opens this weekend and should beat it – especially considering the rave reviews it’s already getting. Expect the latest installment in the series to at least gross $80 million.

New Poll: What’s the best Fast and Furious movie?

With Fast and Furious 6 coming out this week, we want to know which movie in the franchise you think is the best? Let us know and vote below!

Movie News: Assassin’s Creed film given a release date

According to Coming Soon, the Assassin’s Creed film adaptation is set to hit theaters on May 22, 2015. That just happens to be Memorial Day weekend, which is what many people expect to be the release date for Star Wars: Episode VII. Wow, what a weekend that would be if that was the case.

Michael Fassbender has been set to play the lead role with Michael Lesslie writing the script. 20th Century Fox and New Regency will be financing and distribuiting the film. No other cast has been named and no director has been announced either.

I haven’t played the game a ton myself, but I have seen other people play it and I do think it’ll make a great transition to the big screen if done right. Especially now that Fassbender is attached to the project, this film could be really good. The big thing will be getting the right director and producers to put this together well. Video games haven’t had the biggest success on the big screen as Nate and I discussed on Episode 11 of our InSession Film Podcast, so getting the right people in there will be crucial.

Who would you like to see direct the new Assassin’s Creed film?

Movie News: Christopher Nolan in the director’s chair for the next Bond film?

Could it be true? Could the great Christopher Nolan really be directing the next Bond film?

According to UK’s The Daily Mail, that could very well be a possibility as they are reporting that the director of The Dark Knight trilogy and Inception has been approached by the Bond producers. Nolan and his representatives have talked with the Bond producers but everything is still in the early stages and nothing is confirmed.

Nolan is the perfect choice to direct the next Bond film – or any other film for that matter. He would do the franchise justice and I believe he would love the opportunity to one-up Sam Mendes’ Skyfall, which many consider the best Bond film to date.

Nolan is currently gearing up for Interstellar, his film about wormholes starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine.

Movie News: Trailer for Anchorman: The Legend Continues

We’re not done with Ron Burgundy and his news team yet.

A new trailer was recently released for Anchorman: The Legend Continues, the sequel to 2004’s Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. And while it doesn’t give us much insight into the plot, it does gives us some funny moments with Burgundy (Will Ferrell), Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), Brick (Steve Carrell) and Champ Kind (David Koechner).

I’m not a huge comedy film fan but I did enjoy the first Anchorman – mostly because of the four characters mentioned above, especially Brick. So I am looking forward to the sequel even though most sequels in the comedy genre are pretty terrible.

Anchorman: The Legend Continues hits theaters on December 20.
