Box Office Report: The Croods with a big weekend

The Croods dominated the box office this weekend, according to Box Office Mojo, as it took in an estimated $44.7 million in it’s first weekend. For Dreamworks, this is a vast improvement from last Novembers’s Rise of the Guardians which did’t do as well and took nearly two weeks to get to $44 million. Again according to Box Office Mojo, The Croods is right in line with How to Train Your Dragon and Megamind in comparison to opening weekends. I especially liked Rise of the Guardians so this is a little surprising to me given that I didn’t care for The Croods trailers.

Olympus Has Fallen also did decently well with a $30 million debut. Although with the aggressive marketing the did and the special effects, I’m surprised it’s not more than that. However for director Antoine Fuqua, this is his best opening he’s ever had for any of his movies. With the money they spent on this film, it may turn out to be a bust comparatively to what they may have been expecting. We’ll have a full review of it up pretty shortly.

Overall, the weekend had a 35% drop off from this same weekend last year which debuted The Hunger Games, which alone dominated the box office. There will be a new slate of some really great movies coming out soon, so be sure to stay tuned.

Did you get to see any movies this weekend?

Movie News: Gary Oldman and Tom Hardy Teaming Up Again

Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman are teaming up…again. The, what seems unlikely, pair have already teamed up for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Dark Knight Rises, and Lawless. The common denominator in all of those films? They were good. Lawless may not have got the notoriety that the other two films got, but still a good movie nonetheless.

According to Indiewire, the film they are looking to do now is Child 44. The fill will also star Noomi Rapace and Joel Kinnaman. The movie is set to be produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Daniel Espinosa. So far, there’s nothing about those names that makes me think this movie will be bad.

The story follows an MGB agent, played by Hardy, in the 1950’s who is investigating a high profile child murderer who may be connected to the top of the party leadership. Rapace will play the wife of Hardy, while Kinnaman will be Hardy’s bad guy in the film. As for Oldman, he will be playing a cop. Go figure right? Except in this role, he’s one of the suspects in the case.

If you’re not excited for this cast and crew, well I’m not sure what to tell you. This looks to be a great movie though.

Movie News: Ryan Gosling to take a break from acting

Ladies, I know this is a sad day for you, but Ryan Gosling has announced he plans to take a break from acting for a while.

“I’ve been doing it too much,” Gosling revealed in an interview. “I’ve lost perspective on what I’m doing. I think it’s good for me to take a break and reassess why I’m doing it and how I’m doing it. And I think this is probably a good way to learn about that. I need a break from myself as much as I imagine the audience does,” he added.

I’m not sure how that’s true as even I have enjoyed his latest movies. While Gangster Squad didn’t do well in theaters, it wasn’t the bad of a movie. Hist latest project, The Place Beyond the Pines looks to be pretty good too.

I can’t imagine he’ll be gone too long. He’s a pretty heavily sought after actor and people love him. I’m sure the stresses of the business are tough (I wouldn’t know though), but my guess is he’ll be back. So don’t stress too much ladies.

Movie News: Transformers 4 set and plot details

We now know more details about Transformers 4 and they are headed to Detroit. The movie is set to film this spring and has intended to bring $81.9 million to the state of Michigan. That makes it the second-biggest project ever to hit Michigan. Oz the Great and Powerful currently sits at number one when it brought roughly $105 million to Michigan.

“It’s a huge film from one of the biggest studios in the world,” said Ken Droz, a local film consultant and screenwriter who has formerly worked for the Michigan Film Office.

As far as the plot details, it sounds like Transformers 4 will be very different than the first three films. Michael Bay, who’s back at the Director’s helm, recently told Forbes that they have redesigned everything and that we should look for something very different. One of those changes is, which we know, is the main characters. The film will now start Mark Wahlberg and Jack Reynor.

The story reportedly picks up after Transformers: Dark of the Moon and most of the Autobots and Decepticons have left Earth. Scientist and technology experts try to re-create technology based off the robots and things go south from there as you could imagine. We can assume that since the transformers are no longer on earth that we’ll see some battle scenes in space somewhere.

I’m personally excited for this and as a huge Transformers fan, I can’t wait to see how the franchise will be different. I love the idea of Transformers battling in space away from Earth and how Wahlberg and Reynor will fit in.

What do you guys think?

Movie Trailer: Star Trek Into Darkness gets awesome new trailer

Are you serious? A new international trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness was released today and it may be the best one yet. This sequel looks like it’s going to up the stakes big time and Benedict Cumberbatch looks like he’s going to rock it as the villain. I cannot wait to see what J.J. Abrams and Co. have in store!

Star Trek Into Darkness opens on May 17.

Movie Review: Dead Man Down is a good early surprise

Director: Niels Arden Oplev
Writers: J.H. Wyman
Stars: Colin Farrell, Noomi Rapace, Terrence Howard, Dominic Cooper

Synopsis: In New York City, a crime lord’s right-hand man is seduced by one of his boss’s victims, a woman seeking retribution.

[/info]

DIRECTION
Niels Arden Oplev is brilliant in this film. In a film that only features three main sets, the direction couldn’t be better. He gets brilliant performances out of Howard, Farrell, and Rapace. While the supporting cast isn’t the greatest, it doesn’t take away from the film. Some of the film is slow moving as it’s setting up the story, but you start to feel for Farrell’s character and the script starts to come together. I love how he plays the relationship between Rapace and Farrell. At times it feels awkward and complicated, but throughout the film you start see the chemistry appear. The music wasn’t the best in this movie, but his choices later in the film made up for the beginning. The final scene really adds a lot to the movie for me. It’s a great action sequence, that at times is a little predictable, but is a ton of fun to watch. Overall, Opley does a great job with this movie.

Grade: B+

SCRIPT
J.H. Wyman’s screenplay is strongly written and probably my favorite story of 2013 so far. The story revolves around Farrell’s character seeking revenge and trying to find healing for his broken heart. At the same time, Rapace’s character is seeking revenge while trying to re-find her beauty and breaking through her insecurity. The story also involves a crime lord finding out who’s tormenting him while it’s all in his own house. While the story revolves around revenge, heartache, insecurity, healing, family and friendships, not one of those elements necessarily is more than the others. The main theme of the movie is revenge, but I’d argue that finding healing in a broken situation and relying on friends and family is just as strong. I’d love to write a lot more about this script but I’m afraid I’d give away too much. Some of the script is predictable, but it doesn’t take away from the film. The dialogue is great and some scenes really stand out to make it thrilling.

PERFORMANCES
The performances are very strong in the lead roles. Howard, Farrell, and Rapace do a great job in their characters. As an ex-Hungarian, Farrell doesn’t have a great accent in the very few scenes he has it, but as someone who’s heartbroken and seeking revenge, he does pretty well. The biggest thing Farrell lacks is emotion. There are a few scenes where he brings it and it makes it believable. And at the same time, I feel like the lack of emotion fits the situation well. However, I would of liked to see a little more. Rapace is even better as an auto accident victim looking for revenge and in the middle of it falling for Farrell’s character. I’ve always been a huge fan of Howard and he is terrific once again. He does great as a character you like, but he’s just as effective as a bad guy. I didn’t really care for Cooper or the rest of the supporting cast. Their performances are forgettable and didn’t stand out. While I liked the character that Cooper plays, he didn’t add tons of value to it.

Grade: B+

SCORE
The score was done by Jacob Groth and while I like some of his work, this is not his best. In the beginning act, the score is more horror film, and not action-thriller. It didn’t seem appropriate nor did it fit the film. The latter half of the film, especially in the action sequences, were much better. The soundtrack choices were also great adding the music of the film.

Movie Review: The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

Director: Don Scardino
Writers: Jonathan M. Goldstein & John Francis Daley
Stars: Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Olivia Wilde, Jim Carrey

Synopsis: Best friends since childhood, magicians Burt Wonderstone and Anton Marvelton have a falling out after their magic act is threatened by up and coming new wave magician Steve Gray.

[/info]

DIRECTION
Don Scardino directs one heck of a film in his comedic theatrical film debut. It’s rare that a dumb comedy has tight direction and spot-on casting but The Incredible Burt Wonderstone has every angle covered. The film keeps a consistent comedic tone even when dealing with some of the film’s more serious elements, yet it never feels bipolar like some dramatic comedies (e.g. Hancock, Mrs. Doubtfire). Scardino’s direction is rather masterful given this is his first big film, and it plays off as if a veteran comedic director helmed the project. The actors seem at home in the film, and the story comes alive; nothing feels out of place. Accomplishing this takes a crack hand at directing. With Wonderstone, Scardino proves his directorial abilities and that he deserves even more challenging projects in the future.

Grade: A

[divider]

SCRIPT
The script for Burt Wonderstone is one the fresher stories in comedy in recent history. The story focuses on the friendship of Wonderstone and Marvelton rather than on romantic entanglements as most standard comedies do. The comedy is vibrant, deftly combining lowbrow slapstick and crudity with highbrow satire and observational humor. The story has a excellent structure that establishes the plot, follows through with it, and never drags. Where most comedy films fall apart at their conclusion, Wonderstone gets even better. The conclusion of the film is not only compelling in that it completes the underdog theme of the story but it also includes the film’s highest point of comedy. Overall, the script is fresh, full of comedic gems, and is brought utterly to life by the cast.

Grade: A

PERFORMANCES
The performances in Burt Wonderstone are what set this film apart from other supposed “dumb” comedies. Every performance in the movie is believable since it’s obvious all the actors gave themselves over fully to the characters created for them. Steve Carell slips magnificently into the role of Burt Wonderstone. Wonderstonee is a pompous ass, with a waxed chest and an ever more buffed personality, yet Carell adds humanity and sympathy to a character that otherwise might have been one-dimensional. Buscemi, as Anton Marvelton, plays well off of Carell. Marvelton is the straight man but Buscemi is playful enough with the role that he sometimes earns bigger laughs than Carell. Jim Carrey gives the best performance in the film as new wave magician Steve Gray. Jim Carrey’s performance plays like the harrowing acts of Chris Angel as directed by Salvador Dali. Olivia Wilde and Alan Arkin shine as supporting cast, both busting out the best of their comedic sides. The performances push the film to a higher level and help to cement The Incredible Burt Wonderstone as a milestone in comedic film.

Grade: A

SCORE
Lyle Workman’s score is the only aspect of the film not worth getting worked up about. The score is pleasant enough and underscores the action well, as it should; however, nothing in original music stands out. Although the score is fairly standard, the tracked-music is fantastic. The film’s music plays on its themes of magic with cheesy hits like The Steve Miller Band’s “Abracababra” as Burt and Andre’s theme song. Also, “On Top of the World” by Imagine Dragons works as almost a leitmotif for Burt Wonderstone. The song is played three times during the film and every time it comes on, sympathy for the protaginists escalates, causing the audience to root ever for the underdog. (Also, I’m a big fan of Imagine Dragons, so maybe it was just pandering). Overall, the score does its job, a few, special touches that make it better than average.

Movie News: James Cameron hard at work on scripts for Avatar sequels

James-Cameron-Rolex-Submariner-0011Avatar 2 and 3 are on their way – just as soon as director James Cameron is done writing the scripts.

After the massive success of Avatar, the highest grossing film of all-time, there was no doubt there were going to be sequels. We’ve already known for some time now that they were happening and that the second film would likely take place in the waters of Pandora. While the exact story hasn’t been let out of the box yet, we now know that Cameron is hard at work on the scripts.

In a recent interview with Life Goes Strong, Cameron had this to say about where he’s at with Avatar 2 and 3: “I was talking the other day with Peter Jackson and said, ‘You had it easy dude. You had the books when you did the second and third Lord of the Rings. I have to create my own books in my head and extract a script from it. I’m deep into it and I’m living in Pandora right now. There is that start up torque where you feel it’s coming to you. Then you build up momentum. That’s when it gets fun. The characters talk and it’s writing itself. I’m almost there right now. It’s building fast… As a writer, I need isolation. I’m calling you from New Zealand right now where I’m writing on a little farm. When you live in a special world like Pandora, you have to live in that world.”

Avatar was a film-going experience I will never forget. It was the first 3D film I had ever seen and it was incredible. But the story could have used some work as it seemed to be a rehash of Dances with Wolves with some scenes being nearly identical to that film. I’m all for taking another trip to Pandora and experiencing those visuals once again, but this time I’d like a story to back that up.

Kick-Ass 2 gets some cool new character posters

A week after we got an incredibly awesome red-band trailer for Kick-Ass 2, today we got some cool international character posters (via Cine 1). While these posters (gotta love those character names!) make me even more excited for the sequel to perhaps my all-time favorite comic-book film, I have to wonder why there is no poster for Jim Carrey’s Colonel Stars and Stripes. Maybe they have something more in store for him.

Movie News: Emma Watson in 50 Shades of Grey?

Well while a lot of guys may want to see Emma Watson in 50 Shades of Grey, it’s not going to happen. Watson went to Twitter immediately as the rumors were spilled and refuted the reports.

“Who here actually thinks I would do 50 Shades of Gray as a movie? Like really. For real. In real life,” Tweeted Watson in reference to the role. It seems pretty obvious she doesn’t want any part of it. And you can understand why.

It’s been reported that a group called Anonymous, who is known for online hacking, is to blame for the rumors. And like most site’s like that, it’s not really trustworthy.

The book’s author, E.L. James, event went to Twitter saying, “There have been no casting decisions made about Fifty Shades.”

I’m not even sure how they can turn this into a film, with the subject material being so graphic. But like all rumors, we’ll just have to wait and see. As of now, there really hasn’t been much movement with this.

Movie News: Safety Not Guaranteed director to go to Jurassic Park

130315112706-colin-trevorrow-sxsw-2012-story-topThe director of the next installment in the Jurassic Park series has been found.

Colin Trevorrow, who made his directorial debut with last year’s amazing indie Safety Not Guaranteed, will make the big step up to blockbuster by taking on Jurassic Park 4.

Trevorrow got the job because Universal Studios and Steven Spielberg “felt he was a good match for the material, having grown up a huge fan of the trilogy and part of a new generation of steeped in all things dinosaur,” according to Deadline.

I loved, LOVED Safety Not Guaranteed. It was easily one of my favorites films of 2012. I’m excited to see if Trevorrow can make the leap from indie to blockbuster in just one film. I think he can easily get the actors to convey emotion but whether he can establish terror and suspense is another matter. If he can pull it off, he’ll be on his way to a very successful career in Hollywood.

Jurassic Park 4 opens in theaters on June 13, 2014.

Movie News: A Veronica Mars film is on the way thanks to the fans

Fans of the short-lived TV series Veronica Mars are finally getting what they want and they’re the ones that made it happen.

Yesterday, creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell began a Kickstarter campaign for a budget to make a Veronica Mars film with a goal set at $2 million within 30 days. The fans made it happen within 10 hours. In over one full day, 43, 799 fans have raised over $2, 659, 085 for the film’s budget – and those numbers just continue to grow. Here’s a video explaining the whole thing:

A Veronica Mars film has been talked about since the show went off the air in 2007 after three seasons, but Warner Bros. was worried that the show’s fan base wasn’t big enough to support a film. Turns out, that isn’t the case.

I’ve seen the show and I love it. It’s easily one of my all-time favorite shows with one of my all-time favorite characters, the witty, sassy high school private investigator Veronica Mars, played by Bell. And after seeing the show, I think the style and the writing would work well in a film format, and Thomas’ idea of setting the film around Mars’ high school reunion, is a great way to bring all the characters together once again.

Count me super excited for this! It’s now my most anticipated film of 2014!

Movie Trailer: New Kick-Ass 2 trailer is incredible

Kick-Ass 2 has had us pretty excited for quite some time now and the first trailer is finally here. Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl as well as some new heroes are back and they take on a new villain that goes by the name of…well…you’ll have to watch and see. Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars and Stripes is almost un-recognizable. This will be different than anything we’ve seen him in before. It’s a ton of fun so check it out! Fair warning, this specific trailer is for mature audiences.

Oz the Great and Powerful – Episode 4

Movie News: Sam Raimi not doing Oz sequel

Ok, well it’s not official, but in an interview with Bleeding Cool, it doesn’t sound like he will be involved with a sequel.

In the interview, Raimi was quoted saying, “I haven’t planned on directing the sequel. I did leave some loose ends for another director if they want to make the picture. I tried to make it a complete ending, so that the audience would be fulfilled, but I also let Evanora and Theodora get away.” He also went on to add, “I was attracted to this story but I don’t think the second one would have the thing I would need to get me interested.”

While Raimi may not be interested, it’ll be hard to think Disney won’t do a sequel with Oz bringing in $80 million at the box office this weekend. Over the course of it’s lifetime on the big screen, you can assume it’s going to do really well. It also appears Disney has a sequel script that is being worked on right now and has for some time, according to Variety. I imagine Disney will throw a good amount of cash at him though so only time will tell.

If you’re Disney execs though and Raimi doesn’t come back, who would you like to see take the directing role?

Movie Review: Oz the Great and Powerful

Director: Sam Raimi
Writers: Mitchell Kapner & David Lindsay-Abaire, Based on the books by L. Frank Baum
Stars: James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, Zach Braff

Synopsis: Magician Oscar Diggs, a.k.a. Oz, gets swept away from his magic act in Kansas to the land of Oz where he must fulfill a prophecy to bring unity back to the magical land of Oz.

[/info]

DIRECTION
Sam Raimi’s direction is one the weakest points of Oz the Great and Powerful. Sam Raimi is a talented director especially with fantasy material (Evil Dead II, Drag Me to Hell), although normally with more of a comedic horror bend then the family friendly feeling Raimi attempts to conjure here. Raimi is out of his element doing a family-oriented film. It’s not that he’s not capable of it; he is just not allowed to have as much fun as he has in other films. Oz has no coherence as a film. The first 30 minutes are brilliant, filmed in black & white and full frame. However, once the film enters widescreen and color, big-budget effects eclipse the story and characters, leaving viewers with the impression of a colorful yet unfinished work of art.

Grade: C

[divider]

SCRIPT
The story of Oz the Great and Powerful begins promisingly as the character of Oz is developed. He is painted as a selfish yet noble young man who aspires to do good things for others, but he, himself, keeps getting in the way of those plans. However, when the story transitions to the land of Oz, character development becomes non-existent and emphasis is more on visuals, action, and plot development. The plot meanders until it finally reaches an expected and unsatisfying climax. Other characters in the film, including Glinda, Theadora, Evanora, and Finley are flat and seem only to exist to further the plot, rather than making any lasting connects with filmviewers. Overall, the story needs tightening and characters need greater development.

Grade: B-

[divider]

PERFORMANCES
If writing and direction were weak points in Oz, the weakest area of the film is its performances. Performances squeaks by with a slightly higher grade because of the saving grace of James Franco’s intelligent portrayal of Oz. James Franco gives a humanistic performance as Oz in the early sequences of the film, but once the film goes to color, all of the life in Franco’s performance gets overshadowed by the overacting of others as well the overdone look of the film as a whole. Mila Kunis leads the charge of overacting which unfortunately marks Oz. Kunis’s portrayal of Theadora is passable although hardly believable since her evil shows through long before she turns into the wicked witch. The wicked witch is pure caricature,  walking a line between laughable and annoying, somehow missing the terrifying quality of the wicked witch in the original The Wizard of Oz. The supporting cast plays over the top too, never matching the semi-realistic tone Franco set early in the film. With greater performances  or perhaps different casting, Oz might have been a more watchable and engaging film.

Grade: B-

[divider]

SCORE
Danny Elfman’s score is one of the highlights of the film, but it isn’t even enough to fully save Oz. Elfman’s score is magical (as per usual), yet it feels commonplace. Nothing in the music stands out like many of Elfman’s score do. There’s nothing wrong with the score, but also nothing special about it, which for Oz sticking to normalcy might have helped it out in the end.
