Movie News: Monsters University director reveals story in video

UpcomingPixar recently released an extended featurette video for the prequel to 2001’s Monsters, Inc., Monsters University. Most of the footage isn’t new, but director Dan Scanlon does tell us the story we’re going to be seeing when the movie hits in June.

As a big fan of Monsters, Inc., I can’t wait to see how that relationship between Mike and Sulley got started (and to get that great chemistry again between voice actors Billy Crystal and John Goodman). What do you guys think? Excited for some more monsters?

Movie News: The Impossible coming to Blu-ray, but is it worth it?

0

The Impossible movieIf you didn’t see J.A. Bayona’s film, The Impossible, last year you weren’t the only one. It didn’t do well at the box office but it became very popular later in the year after some award voters started giving it some attention. The movie is about a 2004 tsunami that hits the Indian Ocean and the aftermath that follows. It’s based off a true story and stars Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts. Watts was even nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in the film.

The movie is set to come to Blu-ray, DVD and digital download this April. Watts’ character is María Belón in real life and she will be featured in the Blu-ray and DVD extras, which will be fun to hear her perspective as she went through the horrible tragedy.

Since InSession started at the beginning of 2013 (yay!), we didn’t review the film. However, this film is a great watch and Bayona has some great special effects in the film, especially when the tsunami hits land. I thought McGregor and Watts’ performances were great, but the plot was lackluster after the tsunami. The plot becomes a little dull and isn’t anything we haven’t seen before. That being said, you feel for the family since it was a true story and that reels you in. The breakout performance of Tom Holland, who plays the eldest son, was incredible to watch. He was terrific and definitely a positive to the film. Overall, I grade The Impossible a B.

Movie News: Kimmel asks McGregor about new Star Wars

0

Last night Ewan McGregor appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote his new movie coming out, Jack The Giant Killer, and ended up talking about Star Wars instead. Okay, maybe he did plug his movie, but I think more people were interested in the secondary questions McGregor had to answer. McGregor was asked his thoughts on the new Star Wars movies set to come out and this is what he had to say:

Movie News: A sixth Die Hard on the way

John McClane isn’t going into retirement just yet. Bruce Willis, who plays the iconic badass, was recently asked on BBC’s The One Show if there would be a sixth Die Hard movie and his response: “Yeah, Yeah … there will be.”

I for one am all for another Die Hard. I’ve enjoyed all of them (nothing will ever top the first one, which is an action masterpiece) and I’m looking for to A Good Day to Die Hard, which opens next week.

What do you guys think? Excited about more McClane? Any suggestions for what the next title should be?

Movie News: Star Wars To Get More Spin-Off Movies

0

Star Wars Spin OffsYesterday, we posted about how Lucasfilms/Disney plans to make a Yoda-centered Star Wars movie. Well it turns out that’s not the only thing that Disney has in the works. According to a report in EW, Disney plans to do a couple of spin-offs in addition to Yoda and the new trilogy. A young Han Solo saga is in the mix that will tell the story of Han’s origin. There will also be the adventure of the famous bounty hunter, Boba Fett, that will also be coming to the big screen.

According to the report, the Han Solo story would take place in the time period between Revenge of the Sith and the first Star Wars: A New Hope. It’s obvious that Harrison Ford will no longer be Solo, so who would take the part? At this time there is no current leads.

The Boba Fett film would take place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. It’s also been reported that it could take place Empire and Return of the Jedi. If you recall, that’s where Fett was last seen plunging into a sarlacc pit. Again, no leads for any actors have been named at this time.

So that leaves at least three spin-off movies as well as the new trilogy that’s coming. If you’re a Star Wars fan, you have to be going crazy right now! It’s Star Wars all over the place! Well we’d like to know your thoughts. Let us know in the comment section below!

Movie News: Chris Pratt Will Lead In Guardians of the Galaxy

Zero Dark Thirty Chris PrattChris Pratt is about to take his career out of this galaxy. According to report in Entertainment Weekly, Pratt as been confirmed to play the lead in Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. This movie is set to be one of the biggest pieces to Marvel’s Phase Two plan.

Pratt recently played a Navy Seal in Zero Dark Thirty but has mostly been known for his comedy side in Parks and Recreation. Pratt will play the character Star Lord, the half-human and half-alien leader. The 2nd phase of Marvel’s plan seems much more alien in nature in comparison to the 1st phase. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

How do you like Pratt in this role? Good fit?

Movie News: Paperman Animated Short is a Must-Watch

Disney recently released online Paperman, a six-and-a-half minute Oscar-nominated animated short that played in front of the Oscar-nominated Wreck-It Ralph. While Wreck-It Ralph is certainly worth a viewing, Paperman is a must-watch. So STOP what you’re doing and watch it!

Movie News: A Yoda-centered Star Wars movie?

Yoda Star WarsSo who would you want to see featured in the first Star Wars standalone movie? If your answer is Yoda prepare to get really excited (or possibly really disappointed since Star Wars hasn’t been good for the last 30 years). According to Ain’t It Cool, our favorite little green Jedi Master will be the first Star Wars character to get his own movie.

Lucasfilm/Disney also has plans to bring some of our other favorite Star Wars characters to the big screen in their own tales. As a huge Star Wars fan, I would love to see movies centered upon Han Solo and Boba Fett. What about you guys? Any love for a Jar Jar Binks’ standalone film?

Movie News: G.I. Joe: Cobra Special Forces Video

0

In case you haven’t heard, G.I. Joe: Retaliation is finally set to come out this year and Paramount is on the PR offensive right now. Since marketing has essentially been in the works for more than a year, Paramount has some new marketing that, I have to say, is pretty awesome. Paramount has released a new viral marketing campaign that features the Special Forces Cobra unit that is now an elite arm of the US armed forces. The video is a recruitment ad and even has its own website that is very professional and military like. It’s an incredible video and will definitely hype up the movie as it’s drawing nearer. The video may even shock you a little bit and will draw a nice premise to movie. Check it out below and let us know what you think!

Movie News: New Hulk and Avengers Storyline

0

Incredible Hulk AvengersWARNING: The post below reports some major news, but may contain spoilers should Marvel go with this plot.

According to a story by El Mayimbe, a new story line could be in the works for the Hulk and Marvel Studio. They posted a report that the Hulk will be sent into space at some point in The Avengers 2. He’s reportedly deemed too much of a threat to keep on Earth, and so the Marvel superheroes say goodbye to him. However, if Marvel Studios sticks to the comic, Hulk will end up going through a wormhole and will land on an alien planet. They also report that there is a separate Hulk movie that will lead into The Avengers 3. If this is true, it may turn off a lot of fans who aren’t as familiar with this storyline and especially those who love the Hulk in The Avengers.

With how Marvel played the Hulk in the first Avengers and Tony Stark reeling him in, I’d be surprised to see Marvel take this approach. The Hulk became a fan to most and to put him against Earth’s mightiest heroes would be a turn off. That being said, I’ve loved everything they’ve done up to this point and it’s hard for me to argue anything they are going to do. But if you know this story arch, get ready for some crazy changes in the story!

Movie News: Wreck-It Ralph Wins Big

0

Wreck-It Ralph MovieWalt Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph was named Best Animated Feature during Saturday’s Annie Wards, which are are presented by the International Animated Film Society.

Wreck-It Ralph, a comedy about a video game villain who wants to turn hero, won over a good field, which included Brave, Frankenweenie, ParaNorman and Hotel Transylvania. While a lot of critics say 2012 was a down year for animated movies, I thoroughly enjoyed Brave and Hotel Transylvania very much. I thought both of those movies were also deserving, and probably more so to be honest.

That being said, Wreck-It Ralph still dominated the film categories. The movie also won Annies for director Rich Moore, voice co-star Alan Tudyk and for its music and screenplay.

Movie Trailer: World War Z Super Bowl Spot

World War Z, which is set to be released on June 21, has a new Super Bowl spot. The movie is about a U.N. employee who is racing against time and fate, as he travels the world trying to stop the outbreak of a deadly zombie pandemic. The movie stars Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos and David Morse and is directed by Marc Foster. And since this is InSession, the movie is scored by Marco Beltrami, who is known for Live Free or Die Hard and Hurt Locker.

What do you think?

Greetings sports’ fans? No. Wait. Wrong demographic. I mean, what’s the haps cinephiles? Much better.
I’m Matthew Mason. I have an unique predilection for stories caught on film. I can tell you most anything about any film from 1900 to 2012. My repository of film knowledge is approximately as deep as Mariania Trench, and that may be an underestimate.Suffice to say, I am passionate about film.

Film is fullest of arts. Movies allow an audience to wholly experience what their creators dreamed up. The sights, the sounds, the effects that defy reality, the emotions that feel so intimate and legitimate; these are the marks of truly great film. I love movies that revel in these traits and take my imagination to even greater heights. Here just of few of my favorites:

Happy watching folks!

Featured: InSession Film Writer – Nate

Hey there, movie peeps!

My name is Nate Parsons and I’d like to welcome you to our new blog where we will be discussing anything and everything movie related. I have always enjoyed watching movies but I didn’t really start to appreciate movies and understand what really makes a good movie until I was about 18. That’s when I started to expand to different genres and not just watch the most popular movies that came out. And that’s when I started to realize that emotional moments throughout a movie are what drive a good movie.

Whether it’s because a particular set of moments is intense, sad, happy, funny or a combination all of those, when a movie makes you feel something (gives you “goosebumps”), that’s when you know what you’re watching is good. And when you feel those same emotions on not just the first go-round but on also the second, third and fourth times through, that’s when you know you’re watching something special.

So some of my all-time favorites that give me “goosebumps” on every viewing include: The Shawshank Redemption, Braveheart, Schindler’s List, A Beautiful Mind, One Hour Photo, Saving Private Ryan and Warrior.

Some of my other all-time favorites include: Star Wars (excited about J.J. Abrams taking over!), The Lord of the Rings, The Green Mile, The Matrix, Tommy Boy, Casablanca, The Godfather and The Thing (the John Carpenter one, the good one!).
