Michael Mann isn’t the most prolific of filmmakers, but man (pun intended) is the quality always there. From Thief to Manhunter to Heat to Collateral, and everything in between, Mann has a style that vibrates in every single one of his film’s. He’s a director that thrives with pulsating color and energy. He’s also not afraid to play in the gray area with his characters, often positioning them in situations that teeter back and forth between “good” and “bad.” As a result, when it comes to crime thrillers, he’s arguably underrated within the discourse. People often talk about the Scorsese’s and Tarantino’s of the world, but Mann should be in that conversation. His influence on the genre is equally potent and wide ranging. We greatly look forward to discussing this in-depth over the course of the next several weeks, and hope you enjoy the journey along with us.
