Movie Trailer: Spike Lee’s Oldboy follows original pretty closely

If you haven’t seen Park Chan-wood’s original Olboy, you need to. It’s an amazing film with some pretty famous fight scenes that are incredible. The story takes some odd turns but it’s very, very good.

And we finally get the first, and a Red-Band at that, trailer for Spike Lee’s remake of Oldboy. The film stars Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley, and Samuel L. Jackson. Brolin plays the main character and by the trailer, Lee’s remake looks to follow the original pretty closely but it definitely has a 2013 feel to it. It’s obviously in English too and has some culture differences because of that, which you could expect. Because I loved the first one, I was a little hesitant about this project, but it actually looks pretty descent so it’s peaked my curiosity.

Fair warning, this is a Red-Band trailer so expect a bit more.

Oldboy comes to us October 25.

  1. So I was living in Korea when the original movie came out and saw it over there in subtitles. It was a really well done movie. In fact it was only 1 of 4 Korean movies I brought back because they were just that good. Definitely twisted and sick, but such a great twist at the end, and some over the top fight sequences that will make even the hardest person squirm. But it was told in the very Asian style of voice overs. I knew immediately that this would be great if told in Hollywood, but was concerned that they would have to change so much of it to make it anywhere near acceptable in this society. It looks like they’ve kept some of the original stuff, but I’m still wondering how the big reveal at the end will go when you figure out what’s been going on. I can’t wait for this movie.

    • Yeah the first one was awesome. I just watched it a couple of weeks ago and it’s great! It would of been cool to see it in Korea when it came out tho lol. But yeah you make a great point with the ending…it’ll be interesting to see how close they keep it. It looks very much like the original though, so we’ll see.
