This week on the InSession Film Podcast, using Digger as inspiration, we draft our favorite Tom Cruise movies! Plus, a conversation on Avengers Endgame: Encore and the news that Jon Watts will be directing the new Star Wars.
– Box Office (3:28)
We begin the show this week by detailing some box office numbers from the last few weeks. It’s been a historic year and now we can add Resident Evil and Primetime to the list. The latter isn’t going to shatter records, but Primetime is now A24’s third biggest domestic opening ever. Which is notable and when it’s all said and done, it could end up being one of their biggest awards players to date. Sadly, though, on the other side of the coin is Dreamworks’ Forgotten Island, which is off to a rough start.
– Avengers: Endgame / Star Wars (14:58)
We next shift to Avengers Endgame: Encore, a film that has some people update because of how it teases Doomsday while “ruining” the original ending. It’s a silly notion as the original ending breaks the rules the film establishes, something Marvel has explored further in shows like Loki. In short, the teases they add at the end of Endgame are fine. We also had to talk briefly about Jon Watts being tapped to write the new Star Wars movie, which will apparently continue the Skywalker saga.
– Tom Cruise Draft (1:08:23)
Tom Cruise is a (very understandably) polarizing figure, but his presence as an actor is undeniable. As is his passion for cinema and pushing the medium forward. So, with Digger coming out this weekend, we wanted to talk about his best movies and thought a draft would be a fun way to do it. We go back and forth, and honestly, there are two good “teams” selected here. With that said, who do you think won our Tom Cruise draft?
