Miami Vice Discourse (0:35)
Last week, as you all may know, friend of the show Brandon Streussnig sent out an earnest post (on Twitter) about watching Miami Vice with his girlfriend. Somehow, though, it turned into a wildfire with one user going crazy over the fact that someone might love that film. We, of course, had to talk about it given how much we love Michael Mann and our infamous review of Miami Vice here on the show.

– Box Office / F1 Trailer (28:43)
As we’ve been doing this summer, we continued to talk about whether the (box office) parade is on or off after the release of Despicable Me 4 and a few others. The outlook after May was bleak, but theaters have rebounded in a big way since then and we’re hopeful that Twisters can carry that momentum next week. We also wanted to talk about the F1 trailer as it looks promising, even if it is familiar to Top Gun: Maverick.

– Best Picture Movie Series: Ranking the 1940s (51:25)
Before we round out the 1940s in our Best Picture series, we wanted to offer up our rankings of the ten films we’ve covered thus far and quickly discuss how well The Academy did for what was a pivotal decade in U.S. history.

– Best Picture Movie Series: All the King’s Men (50:59)
We continue our Best Picture Movie Series in the 1940s with Robert Rossen’s 1949 Oscar-winning film All the King’s Men! This is a film that had the potential to be an all-timer when you consider its timeless, and still very relatable, messaging. However; it equally demonstrates why execution is important because it is a giant mess in terms of editing and storytelling. You still have to admire that The Academy went for something so deeply cynical.
