This week on Episode 706 of the InSession Film Podcast, inspired by the release of Primetime this weekend, we thought it would be fun to dive into our Top 5 movies about television! Not to be confused with television movies, which is a completely different list. There is something quite fascinating about the world of television, as depicted through the lens of cinema, as the films considered here are pretty extraordinary. This was a challenging list to narrow down given how rich the topic is overall. Even if a few seem pretty obvious as the best, there are some equally riveting underrated gems. Which is to say, we had a blast talking about these movies and why they resonate so viscerally. That said, here are our lists:
(Note: Please keep in mind that we each had different criteria for our selections)
JD
1) Network
2) Disclosure Day
3) I Saw the TV Glow
4) The Insider
5) Christine
Megan
1) The China Syndrome
2) The Truman Show
3) Nightcrawler
4) A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
5) The Hunger Games
Honorable Mentions (Combined)
The King of Comedy, Good Night and Good Luck, Pleasantville, A Face in the Crowd, Broadcast News, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Bamboozled, The Ring, Slumdog Millionaire, Saturday Night, Woman of the Hour, Scrooged
Hopefully you guys enjoyed our lists. If you agree or disagree with us, let us know in the comment section below. There are obviously more movies about television that we didn’t have time to mention (or they’re blindspots for us), so if your list looks very different than ours, we totally get it. That being said, what would be your Top 5? Leave a comment in the comment section or email us at [email protected].
