Movie News: Roland Emmerich to Direct Alien-Invasion Film Emergence

Roland Emmerich is getting back into the alien-invasion game.

According to Deadline, Emmerich and his production company have acquired the rights to a spec script called Emergence, which is supposedly a new take on the alien-invasion genre. Emmerich is attached to direct.

Emmerich is no stranger to having aliens invading Earth, having directed the Will Smith-starring Independence Day back in 1996. That is still the best film he’s ever been a part of, much better than The Day After Tomorrow, 2012 and 10,000 BC.

When Emmerich will get to Emergence is probably the biggest question right now as he currently has two sequels to Independence Day on the docket, and I would assume one or both of those of those would come first since they’re a well-known property.

Emmerich’s newest disaster film, White House Down, opens on June 28.
