Sports movies hit us emotionally for many reasons, and a lot of the time it’s when they begin with this iconic text – “Based on a true story”. Real-life sports and cinema are no strangers to each other, in fact they’ve been successfully married for decades. The best examples have capitalized on what has becoming the single most iconic sports movie trait – they’re inspirational. This weekend’s King Richard will no doubt join the same club (even its tagline includes the word “inspire”), and like many of the best sports films, their stories are true.
