Podcast: They Shall Not Grow Old / Of Fathers and Sons – Extra Film
This week on the InSession Film Podcast: Extra Film show, Ryan and Brendan a pair of war documentaries that have made waves in the film community: They Shall Not Grow Old and Of Fathers and Sons.
They Shall Not Grow Old sees Peter Jackson once again pushing the boundaries of filmmaking technology, taking old footage of World War I and transforming it into something more akin to the documentaries we are used to, today. The film has been colorized and the audio has been manipulated to feel completely true to life. But do these techniques make for a satisfying film experience or is it just an anomalous technology exhibition?
The second film covered in the episode is the hard-hitting documentary from Syrian filmmaker, Of Fathers and Sons. The film has garnered mainstream attention after receiving an Oscar nomination. The film follows a jihadist family in Syria, making for some truly devastating sequences. It is a bleak, harrowing tale, but also an insightful one.
Let us know what you thought of these films on social media and enjoy the show! Thanks for listening!
