This week on the InSession Film Podcast, inspired by You Can See Everything, we discussed our Top 5 documentaries of the 21st century! Plus, JD gives us his thoughts on Her Private Hell, The Christophers, One Night Only, Once Upon a Time in Harlem and The History of Concrete!
– Her Private Hell / The Christophers (8:33)
We begin the show this week with JD talking about some movies he’s recently caught up with, including Nicholas Winding Refn’s latest Her Private Hell and Steven Soderbergh’s highly overlooked movie The Christophers. Say what you will about Refn’s bizarre storytelling, he sure does know how to make an evocative looking movie. And Soderbergh is a favorite around here for a reason.
– Once Upon a Time in Harlem / The History of Concrete (20:04)
In the theme of this episode, it only made sense to then talk about a pair of incredible documentaries. Shot in 1972 and finished 50+ years later, Once Upon a Time in Harlem is an extraordinary film and certainly one of the best docs we’ve seen this year. As for The History of Concrete, it’s exactly what you’d expect from John Wilson (very complimentary).
– Top 5 Docs of the 21st Century (36:46)
With all of the hype around You Can See Everything, one has to wonder if it will eventually land in this conversation. It goes without saying, but there have been some profoundly stirring documentaries over the last 25 years. Some of them simply being the best films of their given years. When done right, nothing hits quite like a stirring documentary, which made this a really fun and rewarding exercise. With that said, what did you think of our lists?
