This week on the InSession Film Podcast, Shadan Larki joins JD to discuss this year’s Oscar nominations (and the Oscars philosophically) and we do a Best Actress nominees draft as we consider the nominees from the 2020s!
– 2026 Oscar Nominations (6:54)
After some opening banter, we dig into this year’s crop of Oscar nominations and talk about how great the lineup is overall. Yes, there are a few major headscratchers, but mostly The Academy did a great job and it was exciting to see horror embraced for once. Who would have thought, given the history of the Oscars, that a vampire folk horror film would break the record with 16 nominations? We also dig a little into the philosophy behind the Oscars and the frustrations of how the system works. The pay-to-play system needs to go and there’s a desperation for variety that is lacking these days.
– Best Actress Draft (59:17)
With the Oscars discourse in full swing right now, we decided to do a Best Actress nominee draft focusing on the nominees in the 2020s for that category. Best Actress is often a rich category each year, however, because of how the system is rigged, there are more questionable nominees than you may remember. Which made for a really fun draft as we had to strategize around nominations that wouldn’t be seen as the best performances. A somewhat tricky, but really fun draft! That said, who do you think won this draft between JD and Shadan?
