The Minions are unstoppable right now.
For the second straight weekend, the weird, little guys have helped Despicable Me 2 claim the top spot at the box office. The Universal animated film hauled in $44.8 million domestically and $55.5 million overseas to bring its total gross to $472.4 million in just two weeks.
Grown-Ups 2 debuted in second with $42.5 million, making it star Adam Sandler’s second-best opening ever behind The Longest Yard‘s $58.6 million in 2005. The Sony comedy also stars Chris Rock, Kevin James and David Spade.
Coming in a disappointing third place was Guillermo del Toro’s robots-vs.-monsters epic Pacific Rim, which opened with $38.3 million for Warner Bros. With positive buzz and worldwide appeal (one of the stars is from Japan), the film should do pretty well overseas. Pacific Rim is visually stunning with a story that actually makes you care about the characters (even if the acting isn’t all that great).
Rounding out the top five was The Heat with $14 million and The Lone Ranger with $11.1 million.
There are three big releases for this weekend with Turbo, Red 2, R.I.P.D. and The Conjuring – but will any of them be able to knock off the Minions?
