If there’s one genre that film critics give the hardest time, it’s the often dreaded music biopic. Most commonly associated with “Wikipedia storytelling”, the music biopic often gets by on the use of its subject’s music, urging us critics to scream, “That’s not enough!” However, ever since we last asked this question (back on Episode 130 for the release of Straight Outta Compton), we have begun to see more successes in the genre, covering the gamut from country to jazz to rocketmen. Here’s hoping the new release of Lee Daniels’s The United States vs. Billie Holiday sustains that upward musical trend.
