This week on the InSession Film Podcast, inspired by The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hitting theaters this weekend, we do a consensus ranking of animated sequels! There are have been plenty of animated sequels over the years, some tremendously great, others not so much, so this ended up being quite the conversation.
– Project Hail Mary (1:46)
To begin this week’s episode, we talk about our review of Project Hail Mary from last week as it was one of our favorite conversations we’ve had on the show this year. Ryan Gosling was perfect casting for the film, and while the film could have utilized him more, there’s no denying his incredible performance. We also celebrate the film’s remarkable box office run so far, one that could well into May as there’s little competition in the way.
– Lord of the Rings Spin-Off / Moana & The End of Oak Street Trailers (19:47)
For the next segment, we discuss the news that Stephen Colbert will be co-writing a screenplay for a new Lord of the Rings movie. Weirdly it was a divisive topic despite Colbert seemingly being perfect for the role. We also rant about the new “Moana” trailer and rave about how cool The End of Oak Street looks in its initial teaser.
– Animated Sequel Ranking (1:05:33)
As noted above, with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hitting theaters, we thought it would be fun to take a look at the best animated sequels and do another consensus ranking. The films at the top are obvious, this is another one of those topics where we spend the bulk of the conversation dissecting the back half of the list. There are a lot of mediocre and bad animated sequels, and perhaps some will be surprised with where we go, but we found some good films to fill out those 6-10 slots.
