We begin the show this week by diving once again into awards discourse and what makes it so immensely frustrating at times. There’s nothing wrong inherently with the Oscars and wanting to celebrate movies (that’s a great thing!), but when we veer away from recognizing the year’s best films and treat it as sports, we devalue the whole reason for doing it. Art isn’t sports. Yet every year this becomes a major part of the conversation and we lament it as we always do.

As we dive into this year’s awards races with Ryan, we begin by talking about the possibility of NEON getting four movies into Best Picture and the history that would make. We also talk about Best Actor and Best Actress, two categories that are actually quite full and competitive this year. We also give Ryan some space to talk about Best Casting and what he expects from that category given that there’s no precedent for it with The Academy.
