This week on Episode 490 of the InSession Film Podcast, inspired by our review of Thor: Love and Thunder, we discuss our favorite movies about lost faith. One of the more fascinating aspects about Love and Thunder is Gorr the God Butcher, played wonderfully by Christian Bale. At the beginning of the film we see he’s a devout man begging for help from his god, but things change for him when he and his daughter are abandoned. Faith and doubt have coexisted in film in some rather profound ways throughout the years. This exercise was a daunting task given the amount of films apt to this topic, and the extreme quality that exists among them. However, it also sparked one of our favorite lists we’ve done in quite awhile. This was a lot of fun and we loved diving into the films that made our lists. That said, here are our lists:
(Note: Please keep in mind that we each had different criteria for our selections)
1) The Virgin Spring
1) The Exorcist
Honorable Mentions (Combined)
A Serious Man, Magnolia, First Reformed, Calvary, The Seventh Seal, Winter Light, The Last Temptation of Christ, Taxi Driver, Life of Pi, The Tree of Life, Knight of Cups, The Elephant Man, Kingdom of Heaven, Prometheus, The Master, mother!, Born of the Fourth of July, The Water Diviner, The Grey, Doubt, Spotlight
Hopefully you guys enjoyed our lists and if you agree or disagree with us, let us know in the comment section below. There are certainly many more movies about faith that are eligible for your lists. That being said, what would be your Top 3? Leave a comment in the comment section or email us at [email protected].
