List: Top 10 Movies of 1999

This week on Episode 653 of the InSession Film Podcast, we continued our year-by-year retrospective series by taking a look at 1999, a year that many consider to be among the best of all-time. Between The Matrix, Magnolia, The Sixth Sense, Eyes Wide Shut, The Straight Story, Election, Being John Malkovich, among many others, it’s easy to see why 1999 has the reputation it does. 1999 certainly has some all-timers on its hands and there’s no denying the severe influence they had on Hollywood for years and years to come. It was also an extraordinary year for foreign cinema. An excellent film like Rosetta wins the Palme d’Or while Pedro Almodóvar’s All About My Mother is one of those defining films of 1999. There’s also the soulful gems of Abbas Kiarostami and Hirokazu Koreeda in The Wind Will Carry Us and After Life respectfully. 1999 also saw arguably the best animated film of all-time in Princess Mononoke. So yeah, it may not be the best year ever for cinema, but it’s absolutely in the conversation. That said, what would be your Top 10?

NOTE: We spend most of our time only discussing our Top 10 movies of 1999, however, as you’ll see below, we have listed our full Top 20 lists from that year.
