This week on the InSession Film Podcast, with JD’s birthday coming up later this week, we thought it would be fun to discuss our Top 5 movies from 1985 (his birth year)! We also discuss the phenomenal box office weekend for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, new X-Men casting and the controversy around Emily Wilson.
– Spider-Man Box Office / Other Marvel Stuff (5:04)
We begin the show this week by diving head on into the historic box office for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which broke the domestic record by $2.5 million over the weekend. Which is interesting because it’s not an Avengers movie. It’s not a movie that was 10-years in the making (a la Endgame). If anything, it’s a reset coming off the heels of Tom Holland’s Homecoming trilogy, and yet it made $100 million more than No Way Home. It was really fun trying to figure out what made the difference this time around. We also spend a few minutes on the new Emma Frost casting and the cancellations of Blade and Wonder Man.

After talking Marvel for a moment, we also wanted to dig into Emily Wilson’s controversial comments on The Odyssey and the discourse that it sparked. While no one is denying Wilson’s credentials or her opinion of the movie, we do make a case for why this reeks of not understanding film language or the adaptation process. Finally, we spend a few minutes on the late-great Glen Hansard, who unfortunately passed away last week at the age of 56.

With JD’s birthday coming up later this week, we wanted to visit his birth year and talk about the great movies of 1985. It was kind of a weird year, but the films at the top have become iconic and massively influential over the years. It also features some vastly underrated movies that we also talk about in our honorable mentions. It might not be the best year of the 1980s, however it’s arguably the most fascinating to discuss regarding its legacy. With that said, what did you think of of our lists?
