This week on the InSession Film Podcast, in anticipation of The Smashing Maching, we have a sports movie draft! Specifically talking about sports movies that are based on true stories. We also discuss the box office for One Battle After Another, AI actresses and the new trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Check out this week’s show and let us know what you think in the comment section. Thanks for listening and for supporting the InSession Film Podcast!
– Opening Banter / OBAA Box Office (0:31)
We begin this week by diving back into the world of the box office as One Battle After Another became Paul Thomas Anderson’s biggest opening to date. It’s still likely never going to make its money back, but between its initial release, its inevitable re-release once it gets Oscar-nominated and premium VOD sales, it may eventually cut those losses in half. Either way, kudos to Warner Bros. for putting up the money knowing they would likely lose something financially on the film.
– AI Actress / Fire and Ash Trailer (25:41)
With all the talk surrounding AI “actress” Tilly Norwood this last week, we had to talk about how nonsensical it all is and the fight against this new movement. Thankfully, many agencies were vocal about how they were not pursuing the AI, but at what point does it begin to change? If at all? Sadly, this probably won’t be the last time this happens. To make things better, though, we followed that up by discussing the new trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash and boy does it look epic.
– Sports Movie Draft (43:40)
For our draft this week, inspired by The Smashing Machine, we wanted to discuss sports movies. Specifically those that are inspired by true stories. Many sports movies are, but obviously some of the great ones (Rocky, Mystery Alaska, Bull Durham) are complete fiction. Funneling the criteria that way certainly made for some fun conversation, especially when we got to the back half of the draft where a lot of the films were about the same in quality. We also did not include documentaries here, which complicated matters further. Who do you think won the draft?
