This week on the InSession Film Podcast, as we anticipated our upcoming 1999 retrospective, we discuss our Top 5 performances of 1999! We also talk about Netflix’s historic box office win with Kpop Demon Hunters and Kumail Nanjiani’s comments about Eternals.
– KPop Demon Hunters Box Office (3:35)
It’s a decade plus conversation at this point as we all know the massive impact that Netflix (and streamers at large) has had on the industry and how the wider audience experiences movies. However, it was worth diving in once again with Kpop Demon Hunters giving Netflix their first ever win at the box office this last weekend. Does this change things at all for Netflix? Do they start to put more of their movies in theaters? Maybe not, but the ripple effect would be significant if Netflix did decide to take action based off these results.
– Kumail Nanjiani & Eternals / M. Night Shyamalan’s New Movie (30:12)
In a recent interview, Kumail Nanjiani talked about how he entered therapy after Eternals flopped at the box office and Marvel essentially giving it The Incredible Hulk treatment. Which is a shame because we think it’s pretty good and we feel for Nanjiani. We also talk about M. Night Shyamalan’s new movie Remain and the fun irony given his writing partner.
– Top 5 Performances of 1999 (55:00)
The year 1999 is often considered the best year for film ever. We’ll discuss the merits of that over the next few weeks as we get into our retrospective, however, it is undeniable the many great performances we saw in 1999. In fact, we had quite a struggle narrowing down our lists to just five performances. Some of them are in the conversation for “all-time” and they certainly given credence to why people feel so highly about 1999 overall. With that said, what would be your Top 5 performances of 1999?
