– 1998 Retrospective (5:50)
We begin the show this week by diving straight into our 1998 Retrospective. As always, we talked about the year as a whole, the movies that helped shape its narrative and why it’s such a fascinating year for cinema. Undoubtedly, 1998 is the year of the “dueling movie” with rivalries such as Antz vs A Bug’s Life, Armageddon vs Deep Impact, Saving Private Ryan vs The Thin Red Line and Elizabeth vs Shakespeare in Love. These kinds of things happen all the time, but never before or since have seen so many blatant duels in one year like this. Either way, it was a fun year to dissect.
– Top 10 Movies of 1998 (42:26)
1998 was a really great year for cinema despite some reservations you’ll see because of how awards season played out. It featured some incredible foreign language films. It was a rockin’ year for summer movies and blockbuster entertainment. The year saw some ambitious movies from new up and comers. International cinema was, of course, excellent as always. It may not reach the same heights as other years, but it had some pretty great depth. At any rate, what are your Top 10 Movies of 1998?
