We open the show this week by diving into the box office haul for the new live-action Moana. It’s a bit of a paradox. We never root for movies to fail as champion of cinema and the theaters, however we had to make an exception for Disney’s latest. They cannot be rewarded for such lazy and inept filmmaking. If Disney wants to regurgitate their animated films, fine, but at least put in some effort.
– Pirates / Transformers (24:51)
In what was one of the more fascinating weeks we’ve ever seen on social media, leading up to the release of Moana, it was Michael Bay’s Transformers and the Gore Verbinski Pirate movies that went super viral. Never thought we’d see the day where Transformers would have a revisionist moment, but here we are. The major studios have become such a beacon for cheap-looking blockbusters that the discourse keeps looking to movies from 20 years ago as the peak of summer movies.

Christopher Nolan is a favorite filmmaker of ours (hot take, I know), so the idea of dissecting our favorite scenes was a daunting task. There are so many great sequences to parse through, whether you’re craving action and spectacle, or maybe more underratedly, the small and quiet moments full of beauty or horror.
