This week on the InSession Film Podcast, inspired by the release of Backrooms this weekend, we discussed our Top 5 A24 movies! We also talk a little Star Wars box office, Fjord winning this year’s Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and JD gives us his thoughts on Michael.
– Open / The Mandalorian Box Office (1:57)
We open this week by talking about the box office for The Mandalorian and Grogu, which didn’t exactly light things up in the ways that LucasFilm probably wanted. But it is as TV movie after all, so perhaps they weren’t exactly expecting a billion dollar hit? The whole thing has been kind of strange and we wanted to discuss it further.

We then move on to the Cannes Film Festival and this year’s Palme d’Or winner Fjord. As per usual lately, the online discourse went absolutely banana’s despite the fact that most people haven’t seen the film yet. Just the idea of a filmmaker winning the award more than once sent people into a frenzy. As noted above, we round out this segment with JD talking about his experience of seeing Michael in the theater, which ended up being one of the most bipolar trips to the cinema he’s ever had.

A24 came onto the scenes in the 2010s in a big way. Their second movie ever was Spring Breakers, a film we’ve talked about a lot over the years. It didn’t take long for cinephiles to take notice of the great movies they were distributing. They even have a best picture winner on their hands, and it’s arguably the best Oscar winner of that particular decade. Which is to say, they have no shortage of amazing movies and it was extremely difficult to narrow this down to a five. With that said, what would be your Top 5 A24 movies?
