This week on the InSession Film Podcast, inspired by the success of Project Hail Mary and the historic launch of Artemis II, we thought it would be really fun to do a March Madness-style bracket discussing the best space movies of all-time! 32 movies. Only one winner. This was a lot of fun, even if some of these matchups were incredibly challenging.
– Bracket Criteria (3:05)
To begin this week’s episode, we talk about our inspirations for doing this bracket and the serendipitous nature of it all given the remarkable run by Project Hail Mary and how that coincided with the Artemis II mission. We also break down our criteria for “space movie” as we wanted to have some distinction as opposed to sci-fi movies more broadly. Classics like Blade Runner, for example, are otherworldly but there’s no space element to it.
– 1st Round (16:50)
This was the longest round by far. Not only because it has the most number of films (32), but this is where we spent time breaking them down and ultimately why we chose one over the other for each matchup. As you might expect, some were quite challenging and took some debating, but it was a ton of fun trying to disseminate which films moved on to the next round.
– Sweet 16 (1:35:24) / Elite 8 (1:39:38) / Final Four & Championship (1:43:47)
The next four rounds were much quicker. Because we had already talked about the films and why we loved them, all we had to do was debate which one moved on to the next round. Some matchups were easy, others made us pull our hair out. Especially as we got into the Final Four and the Championship. We are talking about some of the best movies of all-time after all, so debating a winner for those matchups made for some tense moments.
