This week on the InSession Film Podcast, inspired by Kevin Jacobsen’s captivating series of prompts where he asked who you would vote for if the last five Oscar winners (in any particular category) were up against each other, we thought we would do the same but for our InSession Film Awards winners! So it turned into a fun retrospective on our awards winners over the last six years, many of which we still love, but as you may expect, some of our winners may have changed if we had a re-do.
– JD’s Approach To Horror / Project Hail Mary Box Office (1:14)
To begin this week’s episode, JD reveals his secret to horror films and how he’s able to engage with them. Purists will hate it, but it makes that genre fun for him. We then shift our attention to the box office for Project Hail Mary, which launched out of the gate with massive numbers. We always want to celebrate the successes of non-IP like this, especially when it’s made with care and artists creating immersive art that pops on the big screen.
– Dune: Part 3 and Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailers (23:01)
For the next segment, we talk about the new trailers for Dune: Part 3 and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It’s interesting because both JD and Brendan both loved the Dune Part: 3 trailer, but for very different reasons. Either way, it looks like Denis Villeneuve is bringing the goods once again. As for Spider-Man, there is lots of potential, but visually it looks more of the same with the MCU. So our response is maybe a bit tepid overall.

As noted above, we thought Kevin’s prompts regarding the Oscars was quite compelling. “Let’s take a look back at the last five winners and pool them together” is always fun in an all-star kind of way. But with InSession Film Awards, it’s even more electrifying because these are the winners *we* chose. Our nominees and winners often look very different from The Academy’s as they are personal to us. So grouping the last five (or in our case, six, as we also included 2020) winners made this exercise immensely challenging at time. But boy was it a ton of fun!
