This week on the InSession Film Podcast, with Superman now in theaters kicking off the new era of the DCU, we thought it would be to do a consensus Top 10 ranking of franchise starter films! Plus, we have a fun conversation about how Superman sets the foundation for the success of James Gunn’s DCU.
– Opening Banter / Superman vs Man of Steel (0:32)
After some opening banter, we begin the show this week by discussing the success of James Gunn’s Superman and how that compares to Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in 2013. For clarity, we are not engaging the toxic fandom discourse online. But rather, in good faith, talking about how Man of Steel set the table for the DCEU and how Superman is setting the table for the new DCU. Given that we are talking about franchise starters on this episode, it felt appropriate to dive into the similarities and differences between the two.
– Top 10 Franchise Starter Films (46:25)
This is a really rich topic to breakdown. There have been many great films to kick start the biggest franchises we’ve ever seen in cinema. From Alien to Fellowship of the Ring to Mission: Impossible to Rocky to The Curse of the Black Pearl to Godzilla (1954), among many, many others, we had to sift through some all-timers to settle on a Top 10. It’s so dense with great movies we actually settled on more then ten because we had to have a tie. With that said, what would be your Top 10 franchise starter films?
