After some opening banter, we begin the show this week by talking about the incredible momentum that Inside Out 2 carried at the box office last weekend. This let to a variety of rabbit holes that include sports movies, the future of Pixar and more stories about JD with his kids. It was a very long segment that kind of went all over the place, but it was really fun.
– Donald Sutherland / HBO Originals (34:48)
We, of course, had to spend a few minutes talking about the late-great Donald Sutherland and his legendary career. He was a great screen presence that will be deeply missed. Before we get to the beak, we also talk about a new report that Warner Brothers will be marketing some of the new content as HBO Originals, indicating that their move away from HBO was as misguided as we thought it to be.
– Best Picture Movie Series: Hamlet (50:59)
We continue our Best Picture Movie Series in the 1940s with Laurence Olivier’s 1948 Oscar-winning film Hamlet! It might not be the quintessential William Shakespeare adaptation, but it was the first iteration of Hamlet specifically and it’s still only one of two movies where the director also won Best Actor. So, it’s still definitely note-worthy, and say what you will about how it adapts the material, it’s visually dazzling.
