2020 will go down as one of the most unique year’s for film. While things started off quite interesting with films like The Invisible Man and Birds of Prey, soon everything changed as theaters closed due to the pandemic and studios moved releases to 2021. So, we may not have seen as many films as we usually do in a normal year, but 2020 still had some great offerings. Kelly Reichardt gave us her best film to date (arguably) in First Cow. Spike Lee had two great films in Da 5 Bloods and American Utopia. It was a stunning year for documentary’s with Dick Johnson Is Dead, The Painter and the Thief, The Truffle Hunters, Boys State, Time, and many others. A few Hollywood films did remain behind in 2020 with Chris Nolan’s Tenet and David Fincher’s Mank. Pixar’s Soul was released to critical acclaim as well. Not to mention all the small indie gems that came and went throughout the year. Let’s hope that we never see another year like it, but given the state of things, 2020 wasn’t a terrible year for film. It may not be as top heavy as most years, but it was consistent enough to be full and satisfying.
