Podcast: Muppets Most Wanted, Divergent – Extra Film

This week on the InSession Film Podcast: Extra Film segment, Mark Hobin from fastfilmreviews.com joins us in the first half as we discuss Muppets Most Wanted, starring Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell, Tina Fey and our beloved muppets. The second half of our show takes an interesting turn as Brandi Woodrum joins us to discuss Divergent, which turns into a pretty interesting conversation and debate over the premise of the film.

Both Mark and Brandi were fantastic guests and we had some great movie discussion over both films. And as you’ll hear in both segments of the show, we’d love to hear from you. Let us know what your favorite Muppet cameo is and you have to pick a side between Brandi and JD. Tweet us and let us know who won the debate.

Anyway, we hope you have fun listening to this week’s Extra Film segment. Check out the show and let us know what you think in the comment section below. Hope you enjoy and thanks for listening!

  1. Never thought I would be actually making a post to defend Divergent! Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I would grade this an A, it’s not going to be on any of my ‘top movie’ lists for the year or anything like that. However, after hearing this podcast I felt compelled to chime in regardless how late in the game this is coming.

You state that your biggest problem was that it was not believable that the ‘divergents’ posed any kind of threat and that not enough was shown to establish them as threats. You even said that just being divergent/different is not enough for us to jump to the conclusion that it is also threatening or dangerous etc.

No offense, but on both a psychological level and a historical level you couldn’t be further off with the defense of your claim. On a psychological level it is simply human nature to fear difference regardless of any actual realistic threat. It’s why ‘new kids’ at school have such trouble, it’s why the civil rights movement was a struggle and not just a matter of signing a law or passing some type of legislature. Humans simply fear difference. And that’s not an opinion or my stance…that’s just plain facts that have been proven over and over again through time. So, in a lot of instances, they didn’t need to justify or show us WHY we should fear them or why they pose a problem to their society.

On a historical level your argument makes no sense when we think of other cultures or societal structures. Perhaps the easiest comparison is for me to compare this to the communist Soviet Union or any other number of communist states. There are other examples but this is the most known probably to most people. In that type of society every single person serves a specific purpose and is somewhat groomed to play a role within that society. The biggest threat to that type of society IS change, is difference, is anything that threatens the status quo…NOT because they are starting an armed revolution or pose an immediate physical threat but because they are challenging the ‘norm’ which a society like that is desperate to keep entrenched.

I suppose you could make the argument that you agree with all of that but that still in this movie they don’t set up the back story to show that this is the type of society that is present in the film. Again though, that is not a proper line of thinking, in my opinion. The movie only has so long and the focus of the story is not on the past here. No culture just becomes like the culture in the story with no resistance. There no doubt was some type of uprising/revolution/war or some major event in which this ‘government’ took power. There is no way around that.

I think your biggest problem is that the focus of this movie was not on those events but takes place much later in the aftermath where the mere thought of that previous more ‘democratic’ regime is all but forgotten. History proves that in a society like this that has been established (again something that happens prior to the events of this film, and unseen by us) that the mere thought of being different is in fact the biggest threat to its continuance. They did not need to show that these people were a major threat by some type of big action or revolt on the part of the characters we meet. Any human being who has studied our history or knows about the psychology behind human nature should be able to understand why they pose a threat and why the ‘motivation’ and ‘plot’ of this movie is in no way unbelievable or silly.

    • Hey bud, thanks again for the feedback. You make some great points and I’m not going to get into the politics of it all, but despite that, the writing of the film, some of the acting and direction was a huge mess. Yes, I did have a problem with the entire premise of it all and I understand the symbolism it was going for, but there’s A LOT more problems with the film besides that.

That being said, and this is a more philosophical issue than a movie one, but I 1000% disagree with you that it’s human nature to fear something different. I don’t believe that for a second. I think it’s a societal issue that’s embedded into our brains that manipulates the way we think and feel. Pride and entitlement leads to misunderstanding and nonacceptance. But hey, that’s a whole other conversation though for another time and place.

But the film wants us to believe that Divergents are threat because they can “interrupt the system”. They don’t explain why or how, but “just because”. And maybe you’re right that the film wants us to believe that’s what they’re doing. If that’s the case, from a filmmaking standpoint, that idea is poorly executed. If divergents pose a threat, tell me why other than just because. I just find it ridiculous.

If you want to talk about film and societal symbolism regarding fear and the threat of the status quo, see The Hunger Games franchise.

      • Oh don’t get me wrong, hunger games does obviously do a much better job with these themes, I’m going to hold judgement on divergent until I can see the whole story though, just in case they better explain things going further. And to clarify, when I was saying Hunan nature I meant group think our human nature when in groups or society, not on an individual basis. Love talking movies with you as always man! It helps fill the void that not doing a movie podcast has left this last four to six months.

        • I will side with you on that point, maybe they’ll explain it further in part 2. I still think it’s a missed opportunity and a mistake for part one, but I’ll hold off as well just in case. Although I’m not holding my breathe. Lol But yeah man, I love the comments and the feedback. I need to get you on our show soon. I’m scheduled through Jan but any films in February you’d be interested in seeing and discussing with us?

          • Oh, wow. For some reason I never even thought about actually being on the show haha not sure why but that’s a great idea man. I’d love it for sure. I haven’t done my look ahead to 2015 for GeekCastRadio yet, which is usually when I map out what I’m most interested in but I can definitely get back to you on that. If nothing else I could do Jupiter Ascending. I have a new plan for 2015 which is to see 100 films that come out during the year. I know most of you guys see more than that but for me that will beat my all-time record (this year with 70-80 films). I plan on doing a review/blog/podcast on each of the 100 and actually slot each one into a ranking spot as I go through. It should be a lot of fun! Hopefully we are able to collaborate on some of the other things Dan emailed out about as well! We also did a box office prediction show as well as a most anticipated show for 2014 that we plan on doing again for 2015, if you’d like to be in on either of those let me know!

          • Hey man, that sounds good to me! Our Jupiter Ascending show will be Feb. 8 (Sunday) and we usually record around 5pm EST. But if you need a different time, let me know as we’re usually flexible. If anything changes, let me know! As for your guys shows, yeah I’m always down for a “most anticipated” show, I always loved doing those! Just let me know. Thanks man and thanks again for all the awesome comments!
