Podcast: Top 3 Musical Numbers

This week on the InSession Film Podcast, we reviewed the Clint Eastwood’s Jersey Boys, which is based off of the great musical of the same name. Musicals are not for everyone, but for those that do like them, there are a ton of great gems out there that made this Top 3 nearly impossible. It’s even more difficult when discussing specific numbers, given many movie musicals have several amazing songs that could’ve made our Top 3. However, we were up to the challenge and it was a really fun time revisiting a great element of film that we really enjoy.

That being said, which musical numbers from movies would make your list? Here are the one’s that made ours (Keep in mind we all have different criteria for our lists as well):

JD

1) Singin’ in the Rain – Singin’ in the Rain
2) Moulin Rouge! – Elephant Medley
3) Lion King – Can You Feel the Love Tonight

Brendan

1) Sound of Music – The Hills are Alive
2) Once – When Your Mind’s Made Up
3) Beauty and the Beast – Be our Guest

Brandi

1) Little Mermaid – Part of that World
2) Pocahontas – Colors of the Wind
3) Frozen – Let it Go

Honorable Mentions (Combined)

Many songs from these films – Rent, Grease, Wizard of Oz, Annie, Mary Poppins, Guys and Dolls, Team America: World Police, Mulan, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Les Miserables, Chicago, West Side Story, The Muppet Movie

Hopefully you guys enjoyed our lists and if you agree or disagree with us, let us know in the comment section below. There are about a billion other great songs that we didn’t cover that could’ve easily made our lists if not our honorable mentions. So that being said, what would be your Top 3? 1. As someone who has performed on stage and in musicals numerous times I have to say I was a little disappointed with the lists in this one. Luckily most of my ‘wanting to jump out at the imaginary computer in my head (since I was listening to it on my blue-tooth at work” was appeased once you got to your honorable mentions. Now, I admit its nearly impossible to make a great list of musical numbers from film when you only are selecting three. Perhaps disqualifying disney songs would have helped a touch and could have been something you could have saved for a future list but it was still a fun listen.

Some that I feel deserved more time here would be:

*EVERY song from Les Miserables – Probably the best musical film of our generation. – On My Own if I HAD to pick one
*Somewhere over the Rainbow – Wizard of Oz
    *Supercalafragilistic – Mary Poppins
*I Could have Danced all Night – My Fair Lady
*Getting to Know You – The King An
*Luck be a Lady – Guys and Dolls
*Don’t Cry for Me Argentina – Evita
*If I were a Rich Man – Fiddler on the Roof
*The Rainbow Connection – The Muppet Movie
*Oh What A Beautiful Morning – Oklahoma!
    *Blame Canada – South Park
*The Candy Man – Willy Wonka
*Seasons of Love/Light my Candle – Rent
Pitch Perfect the movie – all of it haha
That Thing You Do – just about any song from there

ANNNDDD – Soon to be – Agony from Into the Woods 🙂

    • Yeah this was very hard to narrow down. And for Brandi, you kind of have to know her and understand her criteria. She’s a Disney girl through and through and hasn’t seen a ton of other musicals. So she was limited. And while I still love my Top 3, you’re right, there’s A TON of other great stuff to choose from. And your list is a great depiction of that.

By the way, I haven’t met anyone that likes Les Mis as much as I do so that’s very cool to hear! I love that film as well!

      • Oh don’t get me wrong, I love Disney and would have filled my top three with Disney songs too, that’s why I probably would have disqualified those. Again though loved the discussion either way!
