Movie News: Electro destroys everything on Spider-Man 2 set

As someone who works in social media, I love it when directors use it to reveal some awesome new stuff. Yesterday, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 director, Marc Webb, went to Twitter to reveal a new “electrifying” set photo that looks like a lot of fun. As we know, Electro, is set to be the main villain in the Spider-Man sequel and as you can see, he was destroying everything on set yesterday. The tweet came with the message, “Day 45. This is what happens when you try to give Electro a ticket.” I wish I had the ability to create that when I get a ticket.

Jamie Foxx is playing Electro and while I prefer him in a good guy role (cough, Django Unchained, cough), it’ll be fun to see how he sparks the audience as this particular bad guy. There hasn’t been any information on the character or the movie itself. So far, Webb and company are keeping things pretty vague which makes photos like this one fun. It also brings 1,000 more questions as we have no idea what’s going on. I kind of like it that way and I hope the marketing for the film doesn’t give too much away when the time approaches.

he Amazing Spider-Man 2, will be in theaters on May 2, 2014. Returning to the film is Andrew Garfield return as Spider-Man along with Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Sally Field as Aunt May, and Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben. There will be a lot of new casting as we’ve talked about before that will include Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn, Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson, Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn, Paul Giamatti as the Rhino, and B.J. Novak, Felicity Jones and Colm Feore in mystery roles. It will hopefully be a lot of fun!

Movie News: Anne Hathaway set for Interstellar

Anne Hathaway holds her Oscar for winning Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Les Miserables" in HollywoodChristopher Nolan has found his female lead for his next masterpiece.

According to Deadline, Anne Hathaway will co-star alongside Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar, a sci-fi film about wormholes and time travel. Hathaway is coming off her Oscar-winning role in Les Miserables and she also starred as Catwoman/Selina Kyle in Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. She’s a great actress who usually gives it her all and I can’t wait to see her work with Nolan again.

Movie Trailer: Rush

Ron Howard has a new film coming out and it’s about Formula One racing – not really a subject matter you would associate with somebody who directed Apollo 13 and the terrific A Beautiful Mind. But his new film, Rush, actually looks pretty good based on the recently released trailer, which has some very nice visuals.

Rush is a true story set in the 1970s about two Formula One racers who go head-to-head after one was nearly killed in a catastrophic crash earlier in the year. It stars Chris Hemsworth and Olivia Wilde.

Rush races into theaters on September 20.

Movie Trailer: Elysium

I’m going to get this out of the way first: Elysium looks awesome! I’m a huge fan of Neill Blomkamp’s feature film debut District 9 and I can’t wait for his follow-up.

Elysium appears to be another conscious sci-fi film with trippy technology, awesome weapons and crazy set pieces. I love the look of Matt Damon (we got an awesome poster of the contraption on his back on Tuesday), Sharlto Copley, the space station, the robots and everything else. I love this trailer.

Elysium hits theaters on August 9.

Movie News: Elysium gets an awesome mechanically-enhanced poster

Remember being amazed by Neill Blomkamp’s feature film debut District 9? Yeah, it was awesome. Blomkamp’s follow-up Elysium is coming out this summer and today we got our first look at it with a new poster featuring Matt Damon with some sort of contraption strapped to his back.

I can’t wait for Elysium, another socially conscious sci-fi film where the wealthy live on a space station and the poor stay on an environmentally-wrecked Earth. It stars Damon, Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley. The first official trailer debuts later today and we’ll have it for you to check out.

Movie Review: Side Effects has many good ones

Director: Steven Soderbergh
Writers: Scott Z. Burns
Stars: Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Jude Law, Catherine Zeta Jones

Synopsis: A young woman’s world unravels when a drug prescribed by her psychiatrist has unexpected side effects.

[/info]

DIRECTION
Steven Soderbergh has some great films and if this is his last movie as he claims it is, it’s a good one to go out on. The movie has a strong script behind it, but Soderbergh does a great job of capturing the essence of the story. The movie is set to be all about Rooney Mara’s character in the beginning, but then takes a sudden turn. And because of the turn in the script, the film almost feels like two movies in one film. Soderbergh does a great job though of taking the story and creating excitement and drama of the story and making it feel like it all fits and it’s appropriate. The biggest issue I have is the use of Channing Tatum’s character. He’s under-utilized and doesn’t add much to the story. It’s probably more of a casting issue, but having Tatum in the role doesn’t make sense. Overall though, he got great performances out of the actors, the score was great and all the sets were perfect. And because this is a story driven movie and Soderbergh nails it, it’s a high grade for me even if those other elements were great.

SCRIPT
With only 7 finished writing credits to his name, you almost aren’t sure how good Scott Z. Burns is as a writer. But with films like The Bourne Ultimatum, The Informant!, and Contagion on your resume, it’s hard to say he’s not a good writer. And you can add Side Effects to that list of good movies as well. This is really well written and is a strong script for Soderbergh. I love the plot twists and how he is able to essentially take the story, turn it around and make it all about something else while being appropriate. The dialogue is great, especially for Jude Law’s character and the ending is spot on. The material may not be 100% original, but it’s the way he takes the material and the story and builds the elements on top of each other.

PERFORMANCES
Mara and Law are terrific in this film. Mara does a great job of drawing you into the character and making you feel her pain, while at the same time, you’re trying to understand her and what is going on with the story. Tatum, who plays her husband, is good, but there is one problem. He has that G.I. Joe: Retaliation thing going where he’s great, but hardly in the film. He’s mostly a name they can use the market the film, but the character is so irrelevant to the story that Tatum’s performance is easily forgettable. Catherine Zeta Jones is also good in the film, but like Tatum is a side character that actually has value, but it’s limited as well. But since we’re talking about the performances, they are good and achieve what they needed to do. Law is the driving force of this movie though and he carries it well. The movie takes a sudden turn as I’ve mentioned, and Law now becomes a character fighting for something, where in the first half of the film he’s investigating. He’s remarkable in the role though and makes this movie for me.

SCORE
Thomas Newman’s score for this film is very appropriate and was good. It wasn’t an outstanding score and it was mostly in the background, which is why I liked it. This movie didn’t need a big, thematic score, but enough to add drama and be in the background for support. And that is exactly Newman does here. So while it may not be a score you go out and purchase, it’s good for what it’s doing and is very appropriate.

Movie News: Evil Dead takes top spot in box office

Evil Dead took the top honors over the weekend at the box office. With a pretty good $26 million weekend, the Evil Dead remake did well and perhaps surprised some people. I’m sure Paramount was hoping G.I. Joe: Retaliation would hold up at #1 for a little bit longer, but as we discussed last week, it just isn’t going to hold up very long. It still had a descent weekend though as it brought in another $21 million. The Croods also brought in another $21 million and will end up going over $200 total for its release. The Croods has had an impressive run so far for Dreamworks and is one that we probably missed out on. I look forward to seeing if it holds up to the hype and the box office results.

Next weekend, 42 comes out and look for that to take over the #1 spot next week. We’ll be reviewing that next week on the podcast.

Movie Trailer: Carrie

So who’s ready for the Carrie remake? Brian de Palma’s 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek is getting a modern makeover with Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore (who is in extra creepy form) taking on the major roles. And based on the newest trailer, it actually looks pretty good.

Carrie wrecks havoc on October 18.

Movie Review: Spring Breakers is a wild time

Director: Harmony Korine
Writers: Harmony Korine
Stars: James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Selena Gomez, Rachel Korine

Synopsis: Four college girls who land in jail after robbing a restaurant in order to fund their spring break vacation find themselves bailed out by a drug and arms dealer who wants them to do some dirty work.

[/info]

DIRECTION
Harmony Korine does wonders with the camera, using every angle, effect and transition imaginable in Spring Breakers. He uses colors excellently, letting the bright hues pop on screen. There’s lots of montages, lots of repetition and it’s all done well. And the highlight of the film, a robbery sequence, is shot in a very unique and almost third-person way. But while the look of the film is quite excellent, he does oversexualize and exploit the girls – moving the camera over their bodies as if he’s some kind of animal prowling them. This is how the film opens, with a 10-minute montage of just girls taking off their tops and doing stupid stuff, and it continues throughout the entire film (including a couple of fairly explicit sex scenes). Yes, it’s a film about spring break but it should’ve been toned down some.

Grade: B+

[divider]

SCRIPT
The script by Korine was pretty solid overall and is something we really haven’t seen a whole lot – four unassuming girls getting caught up in some pretty criminal activities. It was good; the only problem is it takes 30-40 minutes to really get to it. The first third of the film is just the girls talking about spring break, then going on spring break – with a couple of montages. Then, once James Franco’s character comes into play, things start to get really interesting, really dark and really fun. It’s here where Korine really focuses on Franco and the two really bad girls (Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Benson). There was another possible direction he could’ve went and that was with Selena Gomez’s character Faith, the good girl of the group who goes down to Florida to get away and find herself. This storyline could’ve really been expanded and maybe could’ve added a different element to the film.

Grade: B

[divider]

PERFORMANCES
The performances are solid all-around with Hudgens (shedding that sweet Disney image), Gomez, Benson and Rachel Korine doing a fine job as the four spring breakers. But while the four girls do good work, Franco steals the show as Alien, a rapper who is also a thief and a drug dealer. Franco plays him to perfection, adding human emotion and depth to what really could’ve been a cheesy, over-the-top character. His “Look at my sh–!” monologue is reason enough to watch this film.

SCORE
The score by Cliff Martinez fits perfectly with Spring Breakers. He scored Drive and this is in that same realm: Dreamy, trippy, soothing, hypnotic. And Skrillex lends his talents as well, incorporating some of his songs and beats into the film and it works wonderfully.

Movie Trailer: The Purge

This movie has a crazy premise, but looks awesome. That’s all I want to say about it. Check this out:

Movie News: Iron Man 3 exclusive clip

We get our first exclusive clip at Iron Man 3 thanks to Yahoo Movies. Tony Stark gets in front of the press to call out the The Mandarin . Get ready for an epic battle folks!

Movie Trailer: Man of Steel marketing getting the job done

We saw this trailer before we went to see Jurassic Park 3-D and I forgot how exciting this looks. The marketing for Man of Steel is doing one heck of a job. Between this and Iron Man 3, Marvel and DC will have it out this year. Both movies look really great and it’ll be fun to compare the two when it’s all said and done. As far as DC goes and the Justice League, if that’s the direction they go, I think it hinges strongly on how Man of Steel goes. And because of that pressure, it looks like they put everything into this. Look for one incredible movie.

Movie News: Film critic Roger Ebert dies at age 70

Roger-Ebert_2Roger Ebert, best known for co-hosting “Siskel and Ebert At The Movies” with Gene Siskel, died today at the age of 70, two days after revealing cancer had returned to his body. The Chicago Sun-Times, where Ebert had worked as a film critic since 1967, announced his death.

Ebert’s last published piece of work was an essay on his blog on Tuesday titled “Leave of Presence” where he announced his plan to slow down and minimize the amount of film reviews he wrote. His last words to his readers were “I’ll see you at the movies.”

“My intent is to continue to write selected reviews but to leave the rest to a talented team of writers handpicked and greatly admired by me,” wrote Ebert, who had already lost his voice and much of his jaw after battling thyroid and salivary gland cancer. “What’s more, I’ll be able at last to do what I’ve always fantasized about doing: reviewing only the movies I want to review.

“Last year, I wrote the most of my career, including 306 movie reviews, a blog post or two a week, and assorted other articles,” he added. “I must slow down now, which is why I’m taking what I like to call ‘a leave of presence.'”

I began reading Ebert’s reviews and watching him on television toward the end of my high school days when I really started getting serious about films. I continued to regularly read his reviews all the way up to his passing, loving how he never sugarcoated anything and told it exactly how it is in a very eloquent yet easy-going and way. He will be greatly missed.

Movie News: Brad Pitt looks to go back to WWII

basterds2_wide-47d1a4b2dc8fb9dd0f22f5fc943227134cd957e1-s6-c10

After killing some Nazis in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, it appears Brad Pitt isn’t done with World War II just yet.

According to Deadline, Pitt – who can be seen in June’s World War Z – is set to star in David Ayer’s Fury, a story about a five-man tank crew who are fighting against a desperate German army. Fury is based on a true story – something Basterds was not.

Ayer made one of last year’s best films with End of Watch, a found-footage buddy-cop film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a must watch. Ayer’s next film is Ten, a thriller starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington and Terrence Howard, which will be released next May.

As of now, there is no release date set for Fury.

Movie News: Zoe Saldana close to being one of the Guardians of the Galaxy

Zoe-Saldana-Widescreen-Wallpaper-zoe-saldana-9784255-1920-1200Add another blockbuster to Zoe Saldana’s resume.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Saldana is in talks to play Gamora in The Guardians of the Galaxy, part of Marvel’s Phase 2 leading into The Avengers 2. Gamora is a green-skinned humanoid and a skilled assassin who is the only female in the group.

Saldana is no stranger to big-time blockbusters, appearing in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek series (including May’s Star Trek Into Darkness) and James Cameron’s Avatar seriers.

Chris Pratt has already been lined up to play Star-Lord and Dave Bautista will take on the role of Drax the Destroyer. Groot and Rocket Raccoon are the final two members to be cast in James Gunn’s film.

The Guardians of the Galaxy is expected to take over Earth on August 1, 2014.

Red-Band Trailer: Only God Forgives

So who out there liked Drive, the stylistic, violent 70s-esque thriller starring Ryan Gosling? Yeah, most of us. Well, get excited because Gosling is teaming up with Drive director Nicholas Winding Refn again for Only God Forgives.

We got our first real taste of Only God Forgives with today’s trailer and it isn’t exactly a sequel to Drive but boy does it look like it. It uses that same style of filmmaking with vibrant colors and a wild soundtrack. And brutal violence, can’t forget the brutal violence. This looks super good and I can’t wait to see it.

Only God Forgives hits domestic theaters sometime in 2013 but opens in a couple of countries in May.
