Box Office Report: Star Trek Into Darkness doesn’t have bold opening

Star Trek Into Darkness doesn’t go boldly where Star Trek has gone before.

Easily taking the top spot for the weekend was J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness with $70.6 million for the three-day frame and $84.1 million when you add in Wednesday night and Thursday. That’s slightly less than 2009’s Star Trek, which grossed $75.2 million for the weekend and $86.7 million through its first four-and-a-half days.

So is Star Trek Into Darkness a fitting, pleasing sequel to Star Trek – a “disappointment?” Based on the numbers, yes, especially when you consider Paramount publicly predicted a $100 million weekend, which was possible considering the film played in IMAX and in 3D. But you also have to consider that Iron Man 3 and The Great Gatsby are also currently playing in theaters and did well again this weekend.

Iron Man 3 continued its strong run with another $35.2 million to bring its 17-day total to almost $340 million. It also surpassed the $1 billion mark when you add-in its worldwide total. The Great Gatsby grabbed another $23.4 million to bring its total to $90 million.

Rounding out the top five for the weekend were Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain, which grossed $3.1 million for a total of $46.6 million and The Croods, which in its ninth weekend picked up $2.75 million to bring its total to $176.8 million.

Star Trek Into Darkness may be the No. 1 film at the box office for the weekend but don’t expect to stay there. Fast & Furious 6 opens this weekend and should beat it – especially considering the rave reviews it’s already getting. Expect the latest installment in the series to at least gross $80 million.

Movie News: Assassin’s Creed film given a release date

According to Coming Soon, the Assassin’s Creed film adaptation is set to hit theaters on May 22, 2015. That just happens to be Memorial Day weekend, which is what many people expect to be the release date for Star Wars: Episode VII. Wow, what a weekend that would be if that was the case.

Michael Fassbender has been set to play the lead role with Michael Lesslie writing the script. 20th Century Fox and New Regency will be financing and distribuiting the film. No other cast has been named and no director has been announced either.

I haven’t played the game a ton myself, but I have seen other people play it and I do think it’ll make a great transition to the big screen if done right. Especially now that Fassbender is attached to the project, this film could be really good. The big thing will be getting the right director and producers to put this together well. Video games haven’t had the biggest success on the big screen as Nate and I discussed on Episode 11 of our InSession Film Podcast, so getting the right people in there will be crucial.

Who would you like to see direct the new Assassin’s Creed film?

Movie News: Christopher Nolan in the director’s chair for the next Bond film?

Could it be true? Could the great Christopher Nolan really be directing the next Bond film?

According to UK’s The Daily Mail, that could very well be a possibility as they are reporting that the director of The Dark Knight trilogy and Inception has been approached by the Bond producers. Nolan and his representatives have talked with the Bond producers but everything is still in the early stages and nothing is confirmed.

Nolan is the perfect choice to direct the next Bond film – or any other film for that matter. He would do the franchise justice and I believe he would love the opportunity to one-up Sam Mendes’ Skyfall, which many consider the best Bond film to date.

Nolan is currently gearing up for Interstellar, his film about wormholes starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine.

Movie News: Trailer for Anchorman: The Legend Continues

We’re not done with Ron Burgundy and his news team yet.

A new trailer was recently released for Anchorman: The Legend Continues, the sequel to 2004’s Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. And while it doesn’t give us much insight into the plot, it does gives us some funny moments with Burgundy (Will Ferrell), Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), Brick (Steve Carrell) and Champ Kind (David Koechner).

I’m not a huge comedy film fan but I did enjoy the first Anchorman – mostly because of the four characters mentioned above, especially Brick. So I am looking forward to the sequel even though most sequels in the comedy genre are pretty terrible.

Anchorman: The Legend Continues hits theaters on December 20.

Movie Review: Star Trek Into Darkness

Director: J.J. Abrams
Writers: Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof
Stars: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana

Synopsis: After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

[/info]

DIRECTION
J.J. Abrams revitalized Star Trek with his 2009 reboot, giving a new generation a glimpse into these awesome characters. He continues that with Star Trek Into Darkness, a fitting sequel that gives us more of a glimpse into these awesome characters as well as even more action. Abrams did an amazing job casting this series and each character gets a moment to shine, whether it’s a small conversation, a little comic relief or doing something badass in the many action sequences. And speaking of action sequences, Abrams shoots them very well, particularly a sequence in which two characters are flying through a debris-filled space to get from one spaceship to the next. And the visuals are amazing throughout (even with all the lens flares). Whether it’s the Enterprise crashing to Earth or warping through space or characters running through a red jungle, everything looks so good. If Abrams can do for Star Wars what he did for Star Trek and give us good characters, good story and good action, be ready for something special.

SCRIPT
The story for Star Trek Into Darkness may not be as streamlined as the one for Star Trek but it still gets the job done. There’s no need for introductions to the crew this time around, so the film wastes no time letting us see these characters in action. The story this time around is very fast-paced, going from one set piece to another. But there are some nice character moments throughout that really add to the film. There’s a lot more focus on Captain Kirk and him becoming the captain he’s meant to be and there’s a lot more focus on the relationship between Kirk and Spock – all of which is done really well. There’s also a lot of mystery throughout with the villain and his motivation. And there’s a twist with the villain, which anybody who’s paid attention to the film over the past year will know (it’s not as bad as the villain twist in Iron Man 3, that’s for sure).

PERFORMANCES
The cast continues to bring it in Star Trek Into Darkness. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are excellent as Captain Kirk and Spock, respectively, and their relationship continues to grow in this film. The two have great chemistry together. And they have their hands full with newcomer Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays a pretty menacing villain. Cumberbatch (who is absolutely incredible as Sherlock on the BBC’s Sherlock series) owns every moment he’s on screen. Karl Urban (as “Bones”) and Simon Pegg (as “Scotty) provide most of the comic relief and Urban, in particular, does a great job with it. Zoe Saldana (as Uhura), Jon Chu (as Sulu) and Anton Yelchin (as Chekov) have their moments.

SCORE
Michael Giacchino’s score for Star Trek was incredible with many of the main themes continued to be listened to over the years since then. Giacchino’s score for Star Trek Into Darkness is also incredible – because of those main themes. While many of the new additions to the score are solid, those main, recognizable, themes from the first film are what’s remembered.

Movie Trailer: Last Vegas

Well as if The Hangover wasn’t enough Las Vegas humor for you, then you’re in for a treat. A new movie called Last Vegas is here and looks much better, if you ask me. An Oscar-winning A-list cast that includes Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline and Michael Douglas looks to be incredibly entertaining, especially at their age. It’s kind of like The Expendables, but with Oscar-caliber actors who like to have fun and are legends at their craft. It looks like someone lost a bet and this is the film that came out of it, however it does look silly and fun though.

Movie Trailer: Pacific Rim

You like giant monsters? You like giant robots? You like giants monsters fighting giant robots? If you said yes to all of those then get ready for Pacific Rim.

We’ve already seen a bit from Pacific Rim but this latest trailer gives us even more of a glimpse into the scale and action of Guillermo del Toro’s epic film. If there’s a decent story to back up that monster-on-robot action, watch out!

Pacific Rim punches into theaters on July 12.

Movie Review: The English Teacher

Director: Craig Zisk
Writers: Dan Chariton, Stacy Chariton
Stars: Lily Collins, Julianne Moore, Michael Angarano, Nathan Lane

Synopsis: An English teacher’s life is disrupted when a former student returns to her small town after failing as a playwright in New York.

[/info]

DIRECTION
Craig Zisk’s direction starts off strong with a fun voice-over narration that acts as the thoughts of Julianne Moore’s over-literatured, romance-opposing character. You start to feel who her character is and what type of setting you’re about to get into and where you’re about to go. Zisk get’s a descent script but the movie starts to fizzle out toward the last act of the film. His camera movements are very straight forward but adds a nice element of words on the screen as the film is through the perspective of Moore’s character. The music isn’t exciting but the score does fit the tone of the film. Overall Zisk, whose known for TV, can’t escape that fact as it has a TV drama feel to it, but he gets away with it on the merit of the performances.

Grade: B

SCRIPT
The script, as the with the direction, starts off strong as you get to know Moore’s character well and you should as the story is from her point of view. Her character isn’t anything new and is stereotypical as the English/Literature teacher that is all lovey-dovey on the inside but lacks any real romantic relationship on the outside. Her lover is literature and the characters that come along with it. When she comes across a play script from an old student, you see her an emotional wreck that immediately draws her attention and gives it to the school drama teacher. The two begin to do it as a school play and the layers start to develop and unravel when you find out the play is all about. It’s also during that time that the film starts to unravel and take it’s spiral down into some awkward and in some cases immorally-wrong territories. The (movie) script’s tone changes half-way through but comes around at the end with some great themes that I enjoyed, such as forgiveness and humility. The relationship Moore has with Greg Kinnear’s character is broken and in some cases unnecessary. Overall, the script has some creativeness to it, but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before.

Grade: B-

PERFORMANCES
Moore does an amazing job with a character that is mostly stereotypical but she makes some choices that is almost unreal. Her character is so naive and childish at times that she can’t tell the difference between reality and her literature. Jealousy forms and bad decision making becomes her clutch and Moore pulls it off tremendously. Nathan Lane, who plays the drama teacher is amazing as the drama teacher who couldn’t quite make it on Broadway. Michael Angarano and Kinnear play a father and son combo, which is interesting because they hardly share any screen time leaving that relationship emotionally void, which may be the point. I thought they played the characters well though, especially Kinnear as the father who’s relationship with Moore’s character is full of all kinds of madness and stress. I thought Kinnear did a great job though as the doctor who is forced to stand up for himself against a character that is…well…kind of crazy.

Grade: B+

SCORE
The score by Rob Simonsen isn’t one that you’ll want to listen to a lot outside of the film, but it’s fitting and definitely has it’s moments. It’s got a fun, light theme that adds to the film, especially during the narrative pieces. It’s strong it the dramatic elements but mostly in the background where it needs to be.

Movie News: Ron Howard & Brian Grazer planning to Crowdfund Friday Night Lights movie

According to Deadline, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer were in Cannes to introduce a few of their upcoming projects and announced they are planning to use crowdfunding to raise money for a movie version of the TV series, Friday Night Lights. Well you may be thinking, “umm…there’s already a Friday Night Lights movie and it’s pretty good,” and I would agree with you. However, the TV show is pretty popular and it most likely will not be a remake, but rather a continuation of the TV series.

According to Grazer, “We made a terrific feature with Pete Berg, turned it into a terrific TV series and will now make a movie from that series. I’m not sure such a thing has been done before.”

Crowdfunding and Kickstarter campaigns have really ramped up since Veronica Mars pioneered the idea for big films. Zach Braff also started a Kickstarter campaign for his second feature film, Wish I Was Here, which also did really well and created some controversy at the same time. At this rate, this could become an extremely popular trend but it could see some costly consequences, most notably to the fans. I understand it’s easier for directors and producers to get funding for the film, but I’m not convinced this is the best direction going forward. While, the TV series is good, I don’t see a reason to make this film.

Howard and Grazer have a new film coming out in September called Rush, which stars Chris Hemsworth.

Movie News: Angry Birds crashing into theaters in 2016

You know that little video game where you shoot the birds and try to blow up the pigs? That little video game with no dialogue or plot? That little video game where you do the same thing for 100 different levels? Yeah, they’re turning that into a feature-length film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has secured to rights to make a 3D animated film about Angry Birds, the time-wasting video game that has been downloaded over 1.7 billion times. It will hit theaters on July 1, 2016.

John Cohen, producer of Despicable Me, and David Maisel, executive producer of Iron Man, have both signed on to produce.

Like a billion other people, I have wasted many minutes of my life playing Angry Birds. It’s a great little video game. But I don’t want to see it turned into a full-length film. It’s not the craziest thing Hollywood has ever done but it has to be up there.

Movie Trailer: Riddick

“You’re not afraid of the dark are you?” No, but I’m afraid of wasting my time and money on this film.

Today was a big day for Riddick fans, what with this dark poster and now this trailer and all for the third installment in the series simply called Riddick. But neither help my cause to see this film. Why Vin Diesel would push for a third film in this series is beyond me.

Riddick opens on September 6.

Movie News: New poster for Riddick is dark

The new poster for Riddick is, well, dark.

Riddick is a sequel to Pitch Black, the 2000 film starring Vin Diesel about a group of marooned space travelers who get stuck on a very dark planet. Like that film, Riddick is directed by David Twohy and stars Diesel.

Riddick opens on September 6.

Movie Trailer: About Time

Based on this trailer, About Time could be this year’s Safety Not Guarenteed: A quirky love story filled with sci-fi elements. And that comparison makes About Time one of the must-see films of 2013.

In the film, Tim (Domhnall Gleeson, who looks a lot like Martin Freeman) has what everyone wants: The ability to go back in time and relive any moment of his life and make it perfect. The reason for his time traveling is a girl of course, Mary (the beautiful Rachel McAdams).

About Time is directed by Richard Curtis, who directed Love Actually and wrote Notting Hill, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Bridget Jones’ Diary.

About Time opens on September 6.

Movie News: A writer has been found for Mission: Impossible 5

Earlier this month it was confirmed that Tom Cruise is coming back for Mission: Impossible 5. Now, that film has a writer.

According to Deadline, Drew Pearce will be writing the script for the fifth installment in the franchise. No director has yet to be found. Pearce recently co-wrote the very successful Iron Man 3 and also co-write Pacific Rim, which comes out later this summer. Those are his only film writing credits.

Pearce has a lot to live up to as the last two Mission: Impossibles (Mission: Impossible III and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) really raised the bar of the franchise as both were very good films. The script for Iron Man 3 was very solid but I wonder if that was because of him or director Shane Black, who helped write it. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Podcast: Star Trek – Extra Film

This week for our Extra Film segment, Nate and JD review J.J. Abrams 2009 film, Star Trek. With Star Trek: Into Darkness coming out this weekend, we figured we’d look back at Abrams Star Trek and see if it lives up to the hype.

Movie News: The Hunger Games sequel gets a very nice poster

Time to go crazy: A new poster has arrived for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

And I have to say, I didn’t care much for the trailer but this poster is very sharp. I love the colors and I love the artsy nature and simplicity of it with Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss standing about the world with her mockingjay image in the clouds. A very well-done poster and not the generic photoshopped crap we usually get.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire comes out on November 22.

Movie News: Sam Elliott will be a part of Draft Day

The cast for Draft Day just keeps growing.

According to Deadline, the latest actor to join this football flick is none other than Sam Elliott. Elliott, best known for his amazingly awesome voice, will play a “college coach whose quarterback is the top NFL draft pick.”

Elliott joins the cast one day after Tom Welling signed on. They will be joined by Kevin Costner, Denis Leary, Jennifer Garner, Chadwick Boseman and Frank Langella in an Ivan Reitman-directed film about the Cleveland Browns general manager who tries to garner the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft to help his team.

Movie News: Mark Ruffalo reassures fans about Marvel’s casting

Well if you’re a Marvel fan, you may be able to breathe a little bit easier. We’ve discussed on a couple of occasions that Robert Downey Jr. may be done with Iron Man, but that may not be the case.

Mark Ruffalo has come out to reassure fans that he hasn’t heard of any recasting plans, which hopefully means that Downey Jr. will be back. He also says he has every intention of reprising his role as Dr. Bruce Banner.

“I haven’t caught wind of any of that,” says Ruffalo of the recasting rumours. “I was surprised to hear it, because I don’t even think anyone’s really started negotiating yet.”

“I’d be really sad if they did,” continues Ruffalo. “I can’t imagine that. That would be bad. ‘That would not be good,’ as Joss Whedon would say… I’d love to come back as The Hulk. I don’t foresee not coming back as The Hulk.”

Ruffalo also discussed some other Phase 2 appearances he may or may not be in. If you aren’t up to date or haven’t seen Iron Man 3, this may be a spoiler.

However Ruffalo’s appearance in Iron Man 3, was a little surprise, yet pretty entertaining. Here’s a little of what he had to say about it.

“We were doing the Academy Awards and Robert [Downey Jr.] said, ‘Hey, what do you think about coming and doing a cameo in Iron Man?’” says Ruffalo. “So he pitched the idea of the theme and I said, ‘I would love to do that.’

“So, ten days later, I’m on a plane to L.A. and we’re shooting that scene. It was a lot of fun. It was written, but we improvised a little bit and Shane [Black] gave us some adjustments. I haven’t seen it yet, though. Robert thought it would be a good cap to all of the rest of the Iron Man story.”

It’s always a little fun to hear how things come together and hopefully Ruffalo is right about the recasting. It wouldn’t be the same without any of them.
