Movie Review: The Purge explores lots of morality issues

Director: James DeMonaco
Writers:  James DeMonaco
Stars: Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Max Burkholder

Synopsis: A family is held hostage for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during the Purge, a 12-hour period in which any and all crime is legalized.

DIRECTION

Given the script, I think James DeMonaco’s direction is pretty good which puts you into the house of a family that is head heavy during the annual Purge. While predictable given the genre, I love the camera work. The beginning of the film opens with a montage of street camera’s catching street violence and the chaos that the Purge causes every year. DeMonaco also uses a camera built into a remote controlled toy robot that belongs to one of the child characters which was a little different and added some creepiness to the film. DeMonaco also uses some home security camera’s to capture the craziness outside the family’s home to add some more creepyness to the film. While, it lacks creepy, it’s an interesting style choice and does show how disturbing the situation is and how people act in that environment. The best part however, is an action sequence in the third act of the film which was really well shot and a lot of fun to watch on screen. It almost feels misplaced in a film of this genre the way it’s done but for the first time you you feel for the characters and what happens to them. DeMonaco gets some good performances, especially for some characters and the score adds a lot to this film. It’s a film that borders a lot of morality issues and could have gone a million different ways. While the script is mostly weak, DeMonaco captures the trauma of this family well and throws in some creepy moments from time to time, with some unique camera work.

SCRIPT

The script for this film lingers somewhere between The Hunger Games, Panic Room, and Scream with a unique new government that condones killing people. “The New Founding Fathers” has now taken over the good ole’ US of A and had ordained an annual Purge to destroy the crime rate with some possible underlying motivations. Some have suspected they’ve created it to erraticate the homeless and weak which leaves room for lots of moral questions. As the Purge starts, chaos unfolds and one random homeless man finds his way into our protagonists home. Soon after, a group of ruthless, “educated” gang members show up forcing Ethan Hawke’s character to make a decision on whether to give up the homeless man inside his home or put his family into further danger. To kill or not to kill, that is the question. As the story unfolds, you find out that not only is Ethan Hawke having to deal with the question of killing a random homeless man but he also has to deal with moral issues between him and his son, who doesn’t believe the Purge is right to begin with. While the film has an interesting premise, I didn’t care for how the script opens up a few story arcs and never finishes or explains them. The group of bad guys chasing after a random homeless guys seems unrealistic but it’s the twist with our family’s neighbors that is so predictable and cheesy. The consequences of the family’s choices are never fully explored and it just leaves you experiencing a night that would be horrible, but you never really experience what the even would actually be like. The big thing with this film is the same thing with every film in this genre; it’s extremely predictable and the characters do things they would never do in real life.

PERFORMANCES

The performances here are pretty aren’t terrible but they weren’t stellar by any means. Ethan Hawke plays the father of our protagonist family and leads out decently well. His emotions are felt pretty well and his action sequence is pretty awesome. The best performance here is actually the mother played by Lena Headey. Her character does some really stupid, predictable stuff but her love for her family is felt really well. The direction of her character toward the end of the film is incredible and makes up for any cheesiness her character does earlier in the film. Max Burkholder and Adelaide Kane have some interesting story arcs and are descent in their performances. Surprisingly, Edwin Hodge’s character has some important moments and he does a pretty good job even in the small role. The more surprising role was the main “villain” played by Rhys Wakefield. Obviously chasing after Heath Ledger’s “Joker” performance, he brings a creepy, yet polite performance to a character leading the gang after Hodge’s character. The rest of his gang is mostly faceless and are throw away characters anyway. Overall, you experience a family’s nightmare and not so much the Purge.

SCORE

Nathan Whitehead gets the nod here to score and does a pretty good job. As an assistant under my main man Steve Jablonsky, Whitehead has done some good work before. The score adds some thrilling touches and does it’s job well for a genre that gets very predictable. The tones are screeching, very stringy and mostly what you think it would be. It has a few musical elements in a few small parts and isn’t one you’d probably listen to outside the film.

Movie News: Kick-Ass’s Aaron Taylor-Johnson eyed to play Quicksilver in The Avengers 2

Kick-Ass is being recruited by The Avengers.

According to TheWrap, Kick-Ass himself, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, is being eyed to play Quicksilver in The Avengers 2. He is currently the frontrunner.

Quicksilver, who possesses superhuman speed, is one of two two characters who will be introduced in Joss Whedon’s sequel with the other being his twin sister Scarlet Witch. Their father is, wait for it, Magneto. What?! And that’s where it gets interesting as both Marvel and 20th Century Fox own the rights to Quicksilver, who will also be appearing in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. Evan Peters has been cast in that role.

It’s crazy to think that we’ll see the same character played by two different actors in two different films only a year apart. But I’m super excited about seeing Taylor-Johnson in The Avengers as he was excellent in perhaps my favorite comic-book films of all-time, Kick-Ass. He’s definitely a young actor who’s on the rise and he’ll be a great addition to the world’s mightiest superheroes.

Taylor-Johnson can be seen next in Kick-Ass 2, out on August 16, and he is currently filming Godzilla.

Movie News: Roland Emmerich to Direct Alien-Invasion Film Emergence

Roland Emmerich is getting back into the alien-invasion game.

According to Deadline, Emmerich and his production company have acquired the rights to a spec script called Emergence, which is supposedly a new take on the alien-invasion genre. Emmerich is attached to direct.

Emmerich is no stranger to having aliens invading Earth, having directed the Will Smith-starring Independence Day back in 1996. That is still the best film he’s ever been a part of, much better than The Day After Tomorrow, 2012 and 10,000 BC.

When Emmerich will get to Emergence is probably the biggest question right now as he currently has two sequels to Independence Day on the docket, and I would assume one or both of those of those would come first since they’re a well-known property.

Emmerich’s newest disaster film, White House Down, opens on June 28.

Movie News: Mel Gibson joining The Expendables 3 as the villain?

The Expendables 3 just became a must-see film.

According to Showbiz 411, Mel Gibson will be joining the cast of Sylvester Stallone’s third installment of the series. And, in even better news, he will reportedly be playing the villain.

Gibson joins a cast that already includes Stallone, Jason Statham, Terry Crews and Mickey Rourke, along with a group of actors (Nic Cage, Wesley Snipes, Jackie Chan and Milla Jovovich) who were close to being a done deal last week.

The cast for The Expendables 3 is already the best of the series. Say what you will about Gibson, but the guy is a great actor and never phones in a performance. And I can’t wait to see him play the villain (if that is in fact the role he’s playing). The first two films were good fun, but the third one is shaping up to be something special.

The Expendables 3 is expected to hit theaters on August 15, 2014.

Movie News: More Transformers 4 vehicles revealed!

So if you know anything about me, you know that I love the Transformers franchise. I know Michael Bay gets a lot of crap for it, but I love them and it’s a lot of fun for me. One of the reasons is because Bay uses a lot of awesome cars and magically makes them transform into fun-to-watch robot warriors on screen (which is what it’s all about). Well we’ve seen some modifications to Optimus Prime and a few other Autobots, and now we get two more beauties to feast our eyes on.

Via Bay’s Website, we get a first look at Lamborghini Aventador which is the 2013 Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Coupe and it looks pretty amazing if you ask me. The name isn’t very creative for this Autobot but it’s what they have listed. I get the feeling he could be like Jazz from the first film.

Transformers 4 Lamborghini

Next up we have Hound, one of the Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles from Oshkosh Defense. He’s a “rugged and reliable” Autobot, much like the vehicle. Again, could of had a better name but it does look pretty amazing.

Transformers 4 Military Truck

And finally we have what is perhaps one of my favorite Transformers photos yet, especially for this film, and we have all of the new updated Autobots lined up and ready to do battle. I may be the only one, but I’m always excited for a new Transformers film.

Transformers 4 comes out next summer.

Movie News: Bryan Singer tweets awesome photo of Michael Fassbender from set of X-Men

Earlier today Bryan Singer tweeted again from the set of X-Men: Days of Future Past. He’s one of the more exciting directors to follow on Twitter as he tweets quite often about his sets, actors and fun things going on during his projects. This time around, we get a fun picture of Michael Fassbender aka Young Magneto in a cool coat and it looks like something serious is going on. Either way, check out this cool tweet from Mr. Singer.

Movie News: Warner Bros. gives up Friday the 13th and South Park to board Interstellar

When we first started talking about Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, we learned that Warner Bros. and Paramount tag-teamed the project which was very new for rival studios. We’ve learned now what Warner Bros. paid in exchange for half of the project.

In a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. gave up the rights to Friday the 13th and South Park to be apart of the project. Warner Bros. released Nolan’s amazing Dark Knight movies which did really well and is why they wanted in on Interstellar so badly. They wanted it so bad, they gave up a popular horror series as well as one of the more popular animated series out there. Also on the list, Warner Bros. agreed to let Paramount co-finance a to-be-determined A-list property in the future. Basically, Warners Bros. just gave up an arm and leg to be a part of Interstellar.

The rights to South Park and Friday the 13th have gone back and forth a little bit but Warner Bros. and Paramount both had shares in each of them. Warner Bros. decided to sacrifice all of it to be apart of anything Nolan has his hands on to continue their relationship with the filmmaker. If you’re Paramount, you have to love this as you still have hands in this and now you have your hands on franchises that should (unless the universe ends) make them a lot of money.

So far, however, neither studio has made any comments. What do you guys think? Good idea for Warner Bros.?

Red-Band Trailer: Aubrey Plaza tries to lose her virginity in The To-Do List

Simply put: Aubrey Plaza is amazing. And I’ll watch her in anything.

We recently got a trailer for The To-Do List, a film about a college freshman who is trying to lose her virginity. And Plaza plays the girl trying to lose her V-card.

Plaza, who is best known for Parks and Recreation and last year’s amazing Safety Not Guaranteed, is one of two reasons I’m remotely interested in this comedy. The other is the cameos: Bill Hader, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Donald Glover, Andy Samberg, Rachel Bilson, Connie Britton and Clark Gregg.

The To-Do List opens July 26.

Movie Trailer: Paranoia could make for some late-summer fun

If you don’t go see Paranoia later this summer, Harrison Ford might stand on your neck.

Today we got the first trailer for Paranoia, a corporate thriller about a young, hot-shot employee who must spy on his boss’s former mentor. It stars Ford (who looks awesome as a baldy), Gary Oldman (who is always incredible), Liam Hemsworth and Amber Heard.

Based on this trailer, Paranoia appears to have the makings of a fun, over-the-top thriller with a good mix of acting vets and young-ins. The only current downfall is that it’s directed by Robert Luketic, who did Legally Blonde, Monsters-in-Law, The Ugly Truth and Killers. That’s not exactly something to get excited about.

Paranoia comes out on August 16.

Movie Trailer: Excitement level for Man of Steel grows with this Nokia exclusive

Man of Steel just needs to come out already because my excitement level just can’t get any higher after Nokia released this incredible exclusive trailer today.

Man of Steel is one of my most anticipated films of not only the year but ever. And that’s mainly due to their amazing marketing; the trailers and TV spots have been amazing. I can’t wait to see what Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan have cooked up. I’ll be seeing this at midnight (even though I have to be up for work at 6 a.m. the next morning).

Man of Steel opens on June 14.

Movie News: New set photos from PTA’s Inherent Vice

Filming has begun for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice and we have our first photos. If you don’t know, the story takes places in 1969 Los Angeles and centers arounnd a private detective in Larry “Doc” Sportello, who is helping a former lover with an interesting case to say the least.

Joaquin Phoenix is rocking the muttonchops and we also get a very pregnant Maya Rudolph, who has a part in the film. She joins a cast that also includes Katherine Waterston, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Kevin J. O’Connor, and possibly Sean Penn.

Check out these cool set photos!

Movie Trailer: The creepy factor is raised for Insidious: Chapter 2

The 2010 horror film Insidious did a pretty good job of creeping you out. The sequel looks to do an even better job.

Today we got the first trailer for Insidious: Chapter 2, the sequel to Saw and Paranormal Activity creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s film about the Lambert family dealing with evil spirits who are trying to possess their son. Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne and Ty Simpkins are all returning as the family.

Insidious was a pretty good horror film with a decent story that wasn’t quite fully explored – which Insidious: Chapter 2 looks to do, giving us more information on The Further (watch the first film if you want to know what this is). And based on the trailer, it appears the film will offer plenty of more creep-out moments.

Insidious: Chapter 2 creeps us out on September 13.

Movie News: Evangeline Lilly ready to go in first still from The Hobbit sequel

The first glimpse of Evangeline Lilly in the sequel to the upcoming sequel to The Hobbit looks pretty cool.

Today Entertainment Weekly released the first photo of Lilly (below), who will be playing a brand-new character to the world in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Lilly, best known for her role as Kate on Lost, will be playing Tauriel, who is an Elven warrior and head of the Elven Guard. She was created by director Peter Jackson and Co. just for the story.

While Lilly’s character looks really cool (a female Legolas), it’s not enough to get me excited for a sequel to a film I really disliked. And the fact that she’s a new character doesn’t help as well and just proves that Jackson and Co. needed to add certain things just to make this into three films.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will hit theaters on December 13.

Movie News: New Guillermo del Toro featurette on filming Pacific Rim is awesome

Guillermo del Toro is getting me more and more excited for Pacific Rim. Everything I’ve seen so far is amazing to me and what he explains here is even more badass. In a new featurette, del Toro explains how he shot the pilots in the Jaegers and how he will bring realism to the cockpit of these giant robots. Warning, this is awesome!

Movie News: Hans Zimmer to score Interstellar

So this is one of the more exciting pieces of news to me personally. Hans Zimmer has been known to score a lot of great films over the last 20 years but he seems to be getting better and better. If you don’t know, his score for Man of Steel looks to be amazing and I’m very excited for it.

That being said, it’s been confirmed that Zimmer will be doing the score for Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar.

In an interview, Zimmer said, “I wrote something..and I’m writing that. So, yes, we have started.”

This isn’t very surprising considering that Zimmer has scored everything Nolan has done over the last decade, including some great scores for The Dark Knight trilogy. So yes, consider me on board for this.

Movie News: Benicio Del Toro to play a lead role in Guardians of the Galaxy

Benicio Del Toro has joined the impressive cast of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

According to Deadline, the Oscar-winning actor will play a lead role in the James Gunn-directed film. His specific role isn’t known at the moment, but it will be part of future Marvel films.

Del Toro is a fantastic actor, having been nominated for two Oscars, and is a great addition to a cast that also features Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Michael Rooker, Lee Pace, John C. Reilly and Glenn Close. And since most of the lead roles have already been filled, speculation is that Del Toro could be playing Thanos (which would be incredible).

Guardians of the Galaxy, which is so far shaping up quite nicely, hits theaters on August 1, 2014.

Box Office Report: Fast & Furious 6 races to the top spot again

With two new offerings this weekend, most people still lined up to see Fast & Furious 6.

For the second straight weekend, the latest in the Fast and the Furious franchise finished in first at the box office with another $34.5 million. The film, which stars Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, opened with $120 million over the Memorial Day weekend.

Now You See Me magically appeared in second with $28.1 million. With a fantastic cast featuring Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Morgan Freeman, an intriguing story that always keeps you guessing and some great visuals, Now You See Me is one of the better films we’ve seen this year.

M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth wasn’t far behind with $27 million to make it one of Will Smith’s worst openings for any of his major blockbusters. M. Night Shyamalan’s latest is an above-average sci-fi film that doesn’t quite reach its full potential.

Epic and Star Trek Into Darkness tied for fourth with $16.4 million each and The Hangover Part III was fifth with $15.9 million.

With only the Vince Vaughn-Owen Wilson comedy The Internship and the Ethan Hawke thriller The Purge opening this upcoming weekend, there’s actually a good chance Fast & Furious 6 could make it three straight weeks at the top. But then Man of Steel comes out and will blow all other films away.
