This week on the InSession Film Podcast, Michael from the War Machine vs War Horse Podcast joins us as we get wild in our review of Wild starring Reese Witherspoon. For our Top 3 this week, we’re going to do something a little different as we reflect on 2014 with our top 3 movie discoveries of the year. And for our discussion segment, we break down (and argue over) some big movie news in our Are You Down segment.

Michael is always a great guest, despite all the disagreement he gives us at times, but it made for some great conversation. Also, just check out our latest Extra Film where we discuss The Theory of Everything and The Guest.

Anyway, check out this week’s show and let us know what you think in the comment section. Thanks for listening and thanks for supporting our podcast!

Top 3 Discoveries of 2014 (36:53)
So, we did this last year for 2013 and it was a lot of fun, so we decided over the next few weeks we’re going to reflect on 2014 instead of doing our normal Top 3. And each year brings us new actors, directors, composers or just films themselves that stand out impressively as something new to us. Maybe they’re not new overall, but new to us, hence the discovery. Simple right? That being said, what would be your Top 3?

  1. I have to say, over the course of the year I have agreed with you far more than I have disagreed with you on your commentary and grades on the films of 2014. Two things that I can’t wrap my head around though. First, your intense hate for Winter’s Tale. Was it a great movie, absolutely not, was it a good movie, no still probably not. Was it the worst film of the year and as bad as you make it…Again still no. There are a dozen films at least, that were worse over the course of the year. Second, and you could probably predict this, but yours and everyone else’s love for Birdman. Ugh the only film that pissed me off more than birdman and the love and acclaim for that film, is the love and acclaim for under the skin. Ok have to also add your take on Benedict cumberbatch now too, love the actor but have to side with Brendan and Mike, not a good choice here although he may pull it off and be great i think a couple others would have been even better. I don’t really see how you can say he is charismatic, that’s not a trait I associate with him. Also, I understand if you have the opinion that he is better than Downey as Sherlock, but saying it’s “the reality of the situation” when discussing an opinion is kind of silly. Great episode as always man!

    • I do however totally side with you on the christoph waltz discussion though. I was very happy when he won, and he will make one of the best bond villains ever!

    • Hey man, thanks for the feedback as always! First, I haven’t seen a worse film than Winter’s Tale. It’s an abomination of story telling, visual effects and over used cliche’s. And it made Will Smith look awful. By far and away the worse film I’ve seen this year. As for Birdman, I’m not sure what you didn’t like about it but I love how it plays on the idea of art and superhero films (two things I enjoy a lot) as well as the characters own struggles. On top of it’s impeccable editing and visual style. As for The Batch, I was being facetious with my Sherlock line but he is a better Sherlock, IMO. And I can’t understand how ppl don’t find him charismatic and fun to watch on screen. I’m not saying he’s the best actor alive, but he’s really talented and great in everything he does. And he fits Strange perfectly IMO. And to say he’s “too perfect” for that role and that’s why he shouldn’t be cast is silly to me. I would’ve picked him over Leto or Phoenix, whom I also love.

At any rate, thanks for the comments man! Always love a fun debate!

      • I don’t want to rehash my whole review on Birdman so perhaps this will shed some light as to why exactly I hated that movie so much… http://www.geekcastradio.com/featured/review-birdman-take-two – As for Winters Tale – again I understand that it wasn’t a good movie – BUT literally there is not a single chance, nada, zilch, none, ZERO chances that it was actually worse than: The Legend of Hercules (Lutz), Pompeii, or even Robocop, Transcendence, Godzilla, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or Expendables 3. I understand not liking a movie, but you are exaggerating a bit for effect here right?

        • I was being facetious with my comment about Cumberbatch but no, not about Winter’s Tale. I actually didn’t hate Robocop as much as other, I liked Godzilla overall and the others are bad but not the worst of the year. Although Legend of Hercules comes pretty damn close. Winters Tale is an abomination of storytelling, visual effects and the use of your actors. The actors themselves are good actors and I really like them but this film makes them unwatchable. The visual effects are easily the worst of the year and the storytelling is god awful. I would re-watch any of those films you listed 100x each before Winters Tale again. The ONLY redeeming quality of WT is Hans Zimmer’s score. At least for me.

As for Birdman, I’ll give it a listen 🙂 …and disagree the whole time! Lol Just watched it again tonight and loved it just as much!
