List: Top 5 Expectations for Summer 2019

This week on Episode 324 of the InSession Film Podcast, inspired by the start of the summer movie season with Avengers: Endgame last week, we decided to talk about our expectations for this summer’s movie season, and the films that correlate respectively. We discussed both blockbuster and indies alike, and covered as many films in detail as we could in our preview for summer 2019. That said, here are our lists:

(Note: Please keep in mind that we each had different criteria for our selections)

JD

1) JD will either be a genius or look really dumb when it comes to Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
2) Olivia Wild and Joe Talbot will join the ranks of Paul Dano, Bradley Cooper, Bo Burnham, Trey Edwards Shultz, Alex Garland, Greta Gerwig, Jordan Peele and Robert Eggers as the best directorial debuts of the last 5 years with Booksmart and The Last Black Man in San Francisco respectfully.
3) John Wick: Parabelum will cement Keanu Reeves as maybe being more known for Wick than Neo from The Matrix.
4) Wild Rose and Jessie Buckley will vindicate my screaming into the void about how great Buckley was last year in Beast, and that she’s an actress we should be on the lookout for.
5) Ari Aster and Riley Stearns will prove they are not one-hit wonders with Midsommar and The Art of Self-Defense respectively.

Brendan

1) Once Upon A Time in Hollywood will bring Brendan back to the Quentin Tarantino bandwagon.
2) Wild Rose will be this year’s Sing Street.
3) Yesterday will be the most divisive film of the summer.
4) Will Rocketman save the music biopic genre? Not really sure.
5) The Lion King and Aladdin will continue to divide critics and audiences

David

1) As a result of the reaction to the trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog, future summer movies will be effected by Studios listening to fans on Twitter.
2) People will get heavily offended by at least something in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood.
3) Ad Astra will get pushed back yet again to maybe even next year.
4) John Wick: Parabelum and Rocketman will connect with audiences the most.
5) Everyone will continue to complain about The Lion King remake but will go see it anyway.

Honorable Mentions (Combined)

Various expectations on these films – Late Night, The Dead Don’t Die, The Nightingale, The Farwell, Ma, Toy Story 4, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Brightburn, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, New Mutants

Hopefully you guys enjoyed our lists and if you agree or disagree with us, let us know in the comment section below. Given the subjective nature of this topic, and the varying films that we’ll see this summer, this list could go in any number of directions. That being said, what would be your Top 5?
