Featured: Anticipating / Remembering ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’

This weekend kicks off the Fall Movie Season for most cinephiles and leading the charge this year is…Close Encounters of the Third Kind? The Steven Spielberg film? That can’t be correct.

Well, as it turns out, it is. Of course there are new releases this weekend, such as Justin Chadwick’s Tulip Fever and Michael Apted’s Unlocked, but those films will only add to an already disappointing year at the box office. The weekend’s big release is actually a re-release of Spielberg’s classic 1977 film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind for it’s 40th anniversary! If you ask me, not only is Close Encounters one of Spielberg’s best films, I’d argue it’s one of the best films of all-time. And as many of you may know, I wasn’t around in 1977 to see this in all its glory then, so to see it on the big screen now is such a delicious treat.

Close Encounters for me is a transcendent experience that combines wonder, startling terror, gripping emotion and stunning characterization that leaves you breathless by the end. The way Spielberg stages each scene is spellbinding and visually magnetic. The score by John Williams is masterful and iconic. The performances all around are fantastic. Richard Dreyfuss, in particular, gives one of the best performances – if not the best – of his career.

The fact that we are getting a chance to experience this in theaters has me salivating for a mound of mashed potatoes. The only thing that could make this better is if I could see the film at Devil’s Tower in Wyoming, which is apparently a thing that is actually happening. Sadly I will probably not make that screening, but a 4K big-screen experience isn’t too bad either. And boy I cannot wait.

What about you? Will you be seeing Close Encounters of the Third Kind in theaters?
