Featured: Anticipating ‘Battle of the Sexes’

The fall movie season is already off to a good start if you ask me, including the likes of Mother!, Stronger and Brad’s Status, and hopefully this weekend we can add Battle of the Sexes to that list. The film stars the great Emma Stone, coming hot off the heels of her Oscar win earlier this year, and also the always lovely Steve Carell. Sexes is directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who gave us Little Miss Sunshine back in 2006. The two also directed Ruby Sparks back in 2011, a film I still have yet to see, but I’m hoping they can capture that Sunshine magic again here.

Battle of the Sexes is a film based off the true events and tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. It was the biggest sports event of its time and a match that will be one for the ages in how King destroyed Riggs. However, I only know about this story in broad terms and I’m eager to learn more about it and experience the details of how this epic match came to be. At least, I’m anticipating that Dayton and Faris will dive into the psyche of these two individuals and what drove them to participate. What was it like from a business perspective? How did this match effect their careers? I look forward to seeing how all of that unfolds in the film.

Of course, one assumes that you’re excited for this film because of Emma Stone. I know I am. People can say what they want about her in La La Land, but she’s genuinely great in that film. To say that she wasn’t challenged in that role is ludicrous to me. Beyond the one-take choreography, the singing and making all of that movement look easy, she’s doing some captivating work dramtically. The double-use of facial expressions during her “audition” scenes is Oscar-worthy alone. If you ask me, she very much earned that statue. So coming off the heels of that performance, I’m excited to see how she handles herself here. Will it be that post-Oscar lull that some actors find themselves in? Or maybe she’ll carry that momentum into this film? I can’t wait to find out.

I’m also curious to see Stone work with Carell again. This is the second time the duo has worked together after Crazy, Stupid, Love back in 2011. Carell is (almost) always charming and endearing, and he seems like a great fit here. Again, I only know Riggs from a superficial perspective, but Carell will be able to use that charm to amplify this character’s boisterous personality in ways that seems appropriate.

Lastly, and I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t mention this, but I’m hearing very good things about Nicholas Britell’s score for this film. There’s already some awards buzz for his music here and I’m excited to dive further into that inside the film and outside of it as well. The score is available to the public and I look forward to hearing what Britell has in store. He’s a solid composer and did masterful work with Moonlight last year.

What about you? Are you excited for Battle of the Sexes?
